There was a posting recently about a proposal to make some parts of the Internet more centralized to improve "security." It does seem that much of what made the Internet great is being attacked by evil, or at best, misguided individuals.
Most WiFi access points are just that-- access points to a wired internet backbone: telco's.
But, maybe 10 or 15 years from now, when WiFi is much more common (I can only guess), it would seem they would start to overlap and connect, kinda the way the internet grew. A packet could be routed from one WiFi zone to another, nothing but air. It would probably be slower, but it would be even more decentralized than the internet is now.
And it would appeal to the disestablishmentarianist (whew! run that through a spell checker) in all us geeks.
For all I know, this is already going on, and I'm just too poor to buy a clue.
"Coup by Clam" (you either know what I'm talking or you don't) had the crew drinking each other's urine (dont ask). I like Farscape, the writing was superb, and the plot twists kept you guessing, but I doubt it would have lasted half as long on a broadcast network, even Fux. Or worse, Fux would have sucked the life out of the scripts by Season 2. By Season 3 it would have been an anemic Trek clone.
Any bets when Sci-Fi will change their name? How about:
"National Enquirer Channel" or
"Look-at-what-I-just-dug-out-of-my-ear Channel" or
"You Smell Something? Channel" or
"Go Away, We're Too Busy Sh8tting Our Own Pants Channel"
When the next gen of Hubble-type telescopes are deployed, we may be able to pinpoint habitable planets with life. Just look for the tell-tale traces of oxygen and methane. Next trick: getting there.
This GPS thing assumes that every mile driven inside Oregon is somehow a public road. I imagine some Oregonians have large ranches, and they can rack up some miles "riding fences." For that matter, would horses have to wear the silly thing?

Actually, the use of tuned phase multipliers can achieve FTL communication. But I've said too much...
I have 8mm films my Dad took in the Fifties, and while they are grainy, they are viewable (assuming you have something to view them on). I also have videocam footage on magnetic tape from 10 years ago, almost a complete loss. The old stuff seems to have more legs than the new stuff. But analog or digital, the problem of having an appropriate reader will always exist. DVD media (if not the format) may last for 50 years, but will you be able to find a functional DVD player 50 years from now? (Maybe on ebay...)

I've been doing that for the last couple years. All mail, other than ad flyers addressed to Occupant, goes in the shredder (cross-cut) and then into my mulch pile. And since I haul my own garbage personally to the local recycling center, nothing sits on the curb anyway.
It's one of the worst pieces of legislation the RIAA has ever pushed through Congress. Oh, wait, that's DCMA... I mean, DMCA... This dyxlesia really gets me sometimes...

As smart as p33ing on a high-voltage wire.
Get a dish, cancel cable, and be sure to tell the monopolistic b8stards why.
If Farscape was on Fox...

Most of them have spent more on their 6-car garages than you'll ever spend on three houses. Yeah, I'm sure they're hurting.
Sounds like personal experience. So how'd you get a close encounter with the wee beasty?
10 years ago this would have been right up there with Bond's laser wrist watch.

This is why many companies walk you out the door the very minute they announce you are laid off. In the middle of that upgrade/install/whatever? TFB!

I've heard of watches with:
calculators
walky-talkies
gps's
televisions (Dick Tracy style)
depth gauges
calorie counters
pedometers
compasses
heart rate monitors
blood pressure monitors
cell phones
pda's
etc....
Did I miss anything?
