    Hi,

Am I the only one concerned that this seems to be case sensitive? I definitely dont want to give out Case Sensitive shortened URLs - Seems wrong fundamentally.

  2. Disable it? Or not install it? on Canonical Begins Tracking Ubuntu Installations · · Score: 1

Should be easy enough to block or disable it if there is a privacy concern. For most installations, it is optional anyways. (only comes pre-installed with OEM) - Why is this a big news? Not much different than registration for Windows, and much less than that.

I've used Ubuntu for the past 4 years, and I believe that it is the best thing that happened to Linux. If they want to gather how many installs are out there live, I will probably give it to them.

  3. Something Positive too on Your Online Education Experience? · · Score: 1

While everyone here seems to be quite negative about online learning experiences, I have somewhat positive experiences with the UoL Online Laureate program. I have completed 6 subjects there in pursuit of a Master's degree, and am fairly happy about it.
With 15 years of experience in in the industry, I was cynical about the 'learning' part of it too. It is true that in some of the courses, the fellow students have nothing to offer and the discussions tend to remain shallow, but it depends on the instructor also who acts as the moderator. For example, in one of the modules which was programming oriented, I was sure that I would learn nothing new about programming itself and the moderator wasnt too great either, so it was boring. However in another module about networking which is my strong suite, despite the feeling that the other students are not up to the mark to make the discussions interesting, The moderator is making the discussions interesting by posing wonderful questions and stimulating the conversation.
I have also learnt to moderate my comments and picked up soft skills of presenting an answer without being condescending, which is helping me at my work also. From being known as the blunt guy who cannot control his emotions, I was recently called as a 'voice of reason' in resolving a dispute, which is a huge improvement for me in growing in my career. It is possibly the soft skills that are more importantly learnt for the experienced guys participating in online learning. YMMV, but I am definitely better for joining this trend.

A good many replies here - so I will answer a few questions that have been asked.

    1. For this time, I assumed the systems were owned, and they have now been rebuild (Windows Reinstalled).
    2. The Linksys is re-secured - but I hadnt thought of that being owned - so I have to now do a firmware upgrade on that - Thanks for the suggestion.
    3. Other suggestions are to confirm botnet or sniff traffic - I am in the UK, and I can only do so much remotely.
    4. One of the quesions was how I managed to remote into the windows hosts - No, I managed to remote into the Linksys, not the windows hosts.
    5. The bizzarre situation in the Windows host before it was rebuilt was that if we did (I told the commands over the phone for my dad to execute) ping or traceroute to a destination like www.google.co.in, it would work. It would resolve the right IP. However, with any of the browsers, as soon as access to a site was attempted - We would get a message "Connection Reset" or the browsers equivalent. (Firefox, Chrome and IE tried). Has anyone seen that one before?
    6. Another question asked was if the Windows in question was legit - Yes, I bought him a OEM XP the last time I was there and installed it.

Yes it does (Not the crappy wine one). There is a beta native version I use regularly, and on 32-bit it even does plugins (Flash)... However, I got myself a 64-bit comp these days, and it does not run plugins on that one... It feels much faster than Firefox on Linux...

15 years back, When I was younger, I would have probably fallen into that category. However, I had an ingenious manager who turned it into the companys advantage - He assigned and encouraged others to work around me, and do the mundane things around / for me, so that as a team we were successful. Eventually, he taught me to work within a structure, and not feel that structures limit productivity.
I am very grateful to him, and today when I see some one like that, I try to emulate that formula. Works sometimes.

    Guys
Dont forget India is feeding the poor by their space missions. They now take contracts to put satellites in place for other countries, and make money off it. Most of the research is based on that money. And someday, there will be profits from there that will feed the poor!
    Does that make you happy?

Whats with morons bringing up the poverty side of things everytime a scientific achievement of India is brought up? Yes there is poverty and Homeless in India. I see hobos in the UK too. There are more people in that country, so the ratio of Hobos is more. Whats to be appreciated is this - With the kind of pressure that a democratic government faces, imagine the budget pressures an organization like ISRO has? Even NASA is buckling because of budget cuts. If ISRO can achieve things despite poverty, despite such tight budgets, its a much bigger achievement! Remember, this is not China we are talking about where scientific progress can sometimes come at the cost of the people. India is a democracy - Lives are being improved. I used to live in whats a slum - in my childhood. Millions like me got a chance to improve because of an education system, flawed as it is, that is cheap. Dont deride the scientific achievements in face of other difficulties the country faces. The country thrives despite adversity, and sometimes because of adversity!

  14. Its useful to update version numbers... on OpenOffice.org 3.0 Is Officially Here · · Score: 3, Interesting

I have not RTFM. Nor the link. In true /. spirit, Let me state this - A new version number is sometimes needed for other reasons than adding more features. At work I use Office 2007 from MS. Of the five systems at home, all but one use a flavour of linux with Ooo 2.x (mostly Ubuntu, but have an OLPC too). I recently decided to work on a work doc from home, but only when I wanted to open it, I realized it was docx format. I had almost given up - Ooo 2.x came before the 2007, so I did not expect support. But some desparate googling brought me to a filter that I could add, and lo presto, I could use the doc in Ooo! I had honestly not expected the functionality in Ooo 2.x! I had given up based on version numbering and release dates, and most would too. A newer version number might prompt more of us to try harder. It helps! Ashraya
