The military has already learned a lot of the lessons that Sun is demonstrating here.
Off-The Shelf components tend to be a hell of a lot cheaper, and do the job just as well, if not better. It costs a lot of money to make a specialized system. Especially for something as relatively general-purpose as a computer. It's cheaper to fix them when they break (don't kid yourself... ALL systems break sometime), leverages scaling of production, etc.
Basically, it's the only decision they could make and still stay relevant.
Anyone remember Cray? Didn't think so. Supercomputers may be a better solution in some very specific cases, but not enough to warrant the kind of money that goes into them. This is business, after all. Not NASA.
Because X86 is inherently bad. Right. So why does my laptop run faster than any non-X86 laptop in existence? Oh, wait, it's a conspiracy. Because RISC is a panacea of goodness. Because X86 isn't just an instruction set, and there is no possibility of a middle ground using good ideas from many camps. Of course not. The world is black and white, and because Intel came up with it, X86 is OBVIOUSLY black, everything else is white.
But, he should have had his brakes on harder. He should have done more to control a situation he had no idea he was going to be in:) Don't you know? Someone is at fault for everything, always. It can't ever just be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It's an anti-protection 'racket' though. He learned a lot from his troubles, and is now starting a business with what he learned in order to help other people who may not have the same skills or opportunities. For a fee.
Sounds pretty much like standard capitalism to me... perhaps you're one of those people who thinks that everything should be free.
In short, yes, you are the only one who thinks it's hypocritical.
Of course, if you had read TFA, you'd have realized that he doesn't like doing that. He likes being close to the hardware, and doing development tool type stuff. Serious UI's are usually way removed from that level of development.
Because using a coolant that reacts violently with air is a GOOD idea, kids.
Did you even read the links you posted? Seems like the perfect way for an amateur to hurt themselves.
2 phrases:
Corn belt and bio-diesel.
The potential is there. It's still cheaper to buy it though. If worse comes to worst, we won't be up a creek without a paddle. We just won't have our 200HP outboard any more.
Didn't wanna just hold the power button down for a few seconds? That'll override anything software if it's a laptop that's less than 5 or so years old.
But I wouldn't dare question a real tech.
USA brains are what give us the advantage. Keeping the knowledge 'in house' so to speak, to keep us ahead of the curve. We can find labor as easily as any country, but our main strength has been our ingenuity.
No make it noisy. Bring the tape and such to the newspaper. Get the story out. People LOVE to read about such corruption.
Of course, it sounds like you'd rather whine than do something. OAall police must be useless, because you've been dicked around in this situation. May as well take it up the ass since your first try didn't succeed, eh?
Ever heard the term "civil disobedience"? It's where you do something illegal (not immoral) for the right reasons, because the law is wrong.
They want to try legally protect an outmoded business practice, and create an artificial scarcity. Kinda like DeBeers. Both are wrong. The more of this that happens, the better.
That's assuming you buy apple's line that a G5 and a Xeon/Opteron workstation are equivalent. I have both of them here. I'm pretty impressed with the system on the Mac, but it is by no means fast enough to compete with a dual Xeon/Opteron.
Why not use the firewall built into WinXP SP2? It's integrated, and from my basic tests, works very well. It'll do incoming and outgoing filtering, notification, etc. Maybe not as nice as ZoneAlarm, but it's good enough for most people.
Those responsible for sacking them haven't been sacked yet, though, or things would be done in a completely different style at the last minute and at great expense
With current production methings, yes, it would. That's why there's research to try to bring that down;) You know, funding to make the impossible possible.
If I were you, I'd make sure your friends buy you beer/soda and pizza at least periodically... heh. Most of my friends would just do that because they're cool like that, though.
x86 is an aging architecture? You do know that RISC style computation is older, right? And with the way things are now, no, it's really not much problem to be backwards compatible. case: AMD. The new Athlon64's and such are very RISC'y inside, they just have a simple translation layer on the outside. And there has been a lot of research done... RISC isn't the panacea it's fans seem to think it is. It's really not faster in most cases.
Besides, isn't choice good?
Maybe you shouldn't have been speeding that much in the first place? The laws are there not to punish people, but to theoretically keep us from hurting ourselves. I mean, of course you aren't at fault. What is a $500 speeding ticket where you are, something like 30 or more over the posted limit? Did it EVER cross your mind that you might be doing something that could endanger other people on the road? Oh, wait, no, that'd be thinking about other people.
You're a typical American asshole. Fuck everyone else as long as I can get away with it. Burn the bridges now, they're so pretty when they go up in flames.
I hope it comes to bite you on the ass one of these days.

Oh yeah... sorry, I was being stupid a few seconds ago there.
clicky-clicky
http://theinquirer.net/?article=19301 :) Nice to know that /. does research before it posts things like this.
But that's just speculation on my part

Except not. Otherwise, a refrigerator would only be able to get food as cool as room temperature. :)
Go learn some physics

No, they have tight reins on drivers because they license a lot of IP protected code from other companies in order to produce their drivers.

...I actually have a DVD with 9 Speed Racer episodes on it. It's... interesting to watch again.
