I Completely Agree!! You're going to spend more time dealing with emulation issues than actually doing your work. It's all well and good to want to try code x86 ASM on a PPC. Dealing with the cross-platform and architecture issues is quite noble, but when it's crunch time and they want you to turn in work on a short timeframe... Your prof won't care if you wrote it on a PPC or an alpha or did the whole damn thing on punchcards. What he will care about is can you produce what he asked you to produce, and if you're caught up in the semantics of testing iterations, then your going about things the wrong way... Like everyone else is saying... suck it up and go to a lab or buy the hardware and throw it out your window when (and if) you pass the class.

  17. failure is such a subjective term on Has The Xbox Failed In Japan? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I don't think the XBox is failing for any reason other than Japanese pride. My perceptions (ICBW) are that Japanese markets are extremely tough to nearly impossible to break into because of Japanese National pride... I can only equate it to the xenophobia of Russians in the 80s or only buying American-made cars instead of foreign cars.

Japan might have a bunch of pro-Japan and subtly anti-foreign (US) propaganda, but hey... it's strengthening their economy and weakening ours... I'm not suggesting that we all go throw away our PS2s and GCs in favors of an XBox, but I predict that American electronics will never penetrate Asian markets until it's vastly superior and blows everything else out of the water, (which is impossible to do in a hardware war)

I don't know who is and who isn't aware of this rule of thumb, but working at a big Mac development house (no McDonald's jokes plz) taught me one thing. Never ever EVER (shake a baby) buy first revision Apple products. Since the beginning of time, I think Apple has looked at people who buy their newest line not as their first line of customers, but their last team of product testers.

Nearly every Apple product that I've seen come out in the past five years, I've known someone that has to return a Revision A product because Apple just dropped the ball on one thing or another. Don't get me wrong, their products are quite amazing and I'm envious of all my Apple fanatic friends that have everything, but if you're going to be on the bleeding edge and pre-order things before Apple's even done making them, of course you're going to see something wrong with the first batch. If you think otherwise, then why don't you try to release an idiot-proof product to people that want their mp3s automagically synced from their work desktop to their iPod to their car to their laptop to their servers to their friend's computers in the UK. 19. Huge impact on installers on Microsoft WiX Code Released to SourceForge.Net · · Score: 1

How is this going to impact InstallShield, Wise and NSIS... It's going to be tough to get people to pay $2k for a wizard or fancy interface, but they'll do it (look at MSSQL) ...and how long will it be until you see comparable tools that're open source (look at GIMP)... and MSI is already a bit more robust than NSIS... I think my friend said it best, "Everything has it's place." MSI has it's place as an installer for people and teams that need the robustness of advertised features and merge modules and transforms... ...but your average developer who's targeting all the way back to Win95 or even NT4 isn't going to want the overhead of dealing with an MSI installer... It's just like .NET apps... Sure they're lightweight and powerful, only if you ignore the huge overhead cost up front in putting the system in place. It's not going to change much, the place it's going to have the biggest impact is in encouraging Linux/Apache/MySQL/Perl-Python-PHP development groups to toss in a WiX installer for an easier Windows port of the software... and why didn't Rob throw up the source code?!? D'OH!!
