"To me, Linux (1996-2010) is a sad story. Both Windows and MacOS have made huge leaps forward in terms of usability, stability and security, and Linux has hardly moved"
What utter rot!
Complete rubbish. The linux desktop is now extremely usable and realy quite attractive. I prefer it to Windows or Mac, you may not, but it is now a thing of preference rather than utility (or just plain ugliness, like a decade ago). If linux's stability has hardly moved it's because it had no stability problems to begin with, and the security model has always been pretty good too.
I'm not going to argue that it's the perfect OS or suitable for everyone in all situations - choice is good, monoculture is bad - but your argument there is crap.
On the server side you have the advantages of speed and control.
When you're already working on pretty big iron and you're trying to squeeze a few more percent out of it, it seems to be the way to go. Or in my experience it is.
I think the attitude that hardware is cheap (which is indeed true) has turned out a lot of java programmers that just don't think about speed and efficiency. Even the ones who are otherwise competent. Though some of the ones I encounter are finally getting better at stopping memory leak in their code. Or should I call it memory proliferation? Same effect really.
I have actually, yes. Not that I have access to LSD, and the virus thing sounds somewhat fanciful, but yes.
I also wondered what might happen if you spread a whole lot of cannabis seed over a large area and just let it grow. Unfortunately I'm told the results would be pretty useless due to the female plants only really producing when there are no males around to fertilise them.
Well, you can cut out as much native code as you like if you have a dislike for it.
Me, I'm a C programmer and I write performance-critical server code. It doesn't crash all that often because myself and my team are competent.
We see other teams doing things in java that take massive amounts of memory and processor to get near what we can do on pretty standard hardware and... well... there are advantages to coding natively.
(But I'll don't really understand how python can start in a heartbeat when java takes so long...)
You may not get into it for single player, but there are those of us who don't play WoW because we don't have the time and like a good offline gaming experience.
Not that I'm arguing for piracy here - If I want to play I'll buy - but online is not the only thing going and I hope they haven't neglected offline play. Knowing Blizzard though, they won't have neglected it because they do put so very much effort into making their games perfect.
It doesn't matter too much to me whether it's java that's slow or if it's that 90% of java developers suck. The end result is the same, a lot of people will deliberately avoid using it. Hell, if 90% of java developers suck badly enough to make slow, bad programs then perhaps that's a flaw in the JVM/Java too.
Probably not though, it's likely more reflective of Java being the default language these days.
Oh, and FYI, websites cause browsers to fault relatively frequently, unfortunately, because you can't avoid having native code *somewhere*, and browsers are not written perfectly.
Whilst that sort of display is cringeworthy, AC 2 was one of the better games I've played in ages.
It had lots of action, required tactical thinking from time to time, looked amazing, minor puzzle elements, immersive gameplay, extras (stupid stuff to collect) that prolong it's appeal somewhat....
I dunno, maybe the attitude there is all wrong, but AC is to me a good example of a game that got it pretty damn right.
The N900 has a 600MHz ARM chip - I can imagine it being at least one order lower than an i7. And it doesn't really seem to matter how many comments there are, for some reason. I can try to find another browser. The built-in one uses gecko.
Catholics should be more than willing to consider evolution!
The last Pope put out a paper on how evolution was true and was the work of God! It's really ONLY the US evangelicals and their offshoots that have a problem with it.
Because that way I could have things my way and live my life to my rules. I'm not interested in restricting the rights of others, but removing a lot of the bloody stupid restrictions people place on each other.
I honestly believe that a true meritocracy or an enlightened dictatorship could do better. The problem is that they are open to abuse. So we're stuck with the rule of those that can manipulate the moronic mob into voting for them.
Democracy truly is the worst form of government apart from all the rest.
I agree that most people don't care.I don't agree that that's a good thing in any way whatsoever, because sooner later this stuff does affect everyone negatively, and then it's too late.
Turns out that "I told you so, but nobody listened" really isn't that satisfying to say.
Who needs skill or art when you have a billion monkeys? Each snapping away with aabandon because they can fit hundreds to thousands of pics on a memory card?
Good composition will happen by accident and the amateur will get his dollar instead of the professional his 500. That is if anyone can be bothered to wade through the piles of crap to find the image they want.
Golly, other companies have done this before so it must be ok for apple to do it too, and anyone that criticises them must just be a hater. tee hee hee

Actually I'm not sure it is cringeworthy after all.
I *do* like airborne assassinations....
Don't forget FPS!
Quake had no story and took the gaming world by storm.
"I've used the iPhone 4, and when not detuning the antenna due to a bad grip I found the signal strength and call quality to be excellent."
My god man! Snap out of it! Do you see you're now blaming yourself for gripping the phone wrong?
Holy Moley...

Slashdot is about the only site that I can watch max-out the processor for up minutes at a time on my N900.
For a geek website this is REALLY bad. IMHO.
Toyota? Bland and boring?
Don't say that where landcruiser enthusiasts might hear you...

The whole debian environment is a complete lack of software. Right.
Perhaps you meant complete lack of an app that gives you a button to make your phone fart.
I'm sorry, but really, hydrocarbons are not a liquid form of hydrogen, and cars are not powered on hydrogen now. Those things are just wrong!
Your post I find amusing, as it posit a world with abundant hydrogen, looking for a way to make it useful!
That is so wrong on so many levels. I think my head may explode.
Yes! Because statistically valid data are far inferior to anecdotal evidence!
*facepalm*
I'm, sorry USA, whilst the rest of the west is getting chubby, nobody (and I mean nobody) does land-whales like the US of A.
obligatory xkcd

Seriously? A modem? in this age of 3g and ubiquitous wifi?
You want a paralell port with that?
NEWSFLASH - not everyone in developing nation is starving and short of food. For some, an alternative power source such as this is appropriate.

You're a tool.
Given recent experiences in travelling, yes, it's a gross generalisation.
