This is no great revelation other than company names are attached to it. I personally wouldn't have minded seeing Jabber being further investigated by companies.
I don't feel this should be made into a TLD. This means that any orgranized group should have their own domain tld. I will state that I have no problem with it as long as every other organization, company, or cult get to make their own TLD. I mean, if I like manage exclusive escorts in the red light district, do I get a.pmp?
Following the Open Sourcing of Plan9, it was only a matter of time for this to happen. I have tried out the Inferno OS in an emulated mode before (as they provided a developer's kit a few years ago), and after studying its functionality as compared to Plan9, they seemed similar as to what they achieve. Did anyone else note any real applicitive use? This isn't to say that Inferno is not a good OS, I just couldn't find any use for me to use it.
This is of no suprise to me, this is something I had planned to do by use of a neural net. You could teach a software neural network to learn particular patterns involving curves of a human body and amounts of similar color found on that body. It would be more difficult as you would have to match it to a known sample of the skin (which would be commonly found on the face, but of course if they wore a mask, body paint, or...if the location for which you took the constant to be found was obscured it would make it tough. The other problem was to be able to train the network not to overtrain the net so that it would exclude to a certain pattern of bodies, and not those with more weight, hair, and such. The other problems I could see with this would be understanding how to have the net read from the different image types that a browser can understand. This means you would have to write a translator to a particular type of image format so the net could read it (to make it simple). Then there is that whole issue of trying to read video streams, but I don't think that would be a problem as you could sample each frame presented and run it through a filter...but man would that take a long time. I guess though for people who feel that strongly they could be lazy enough to let the neural net scan it vs. them taking a quick preview. There are many packages out there that allow one to create a neural network, and really nice free ones such as SNNS, which is really cool because when you get done making your neural net, it will generate your network in C code. I would love to work on this with someone. I think it would be alot of fun.
Wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft bought out Bungie for the soul purpose of having a company from which they could learn how to program specifically for the Linux gaming market. Hhaha..what was I thinking right? Man, this is so sad...I wonder when M$ is going to buy Slashdot?
Think of this..now if these merchants trade, give, or sell customer information to database companies for the use of third party information collectors to use for their own personal use in profiling potential people for their own purposes, this gives them the ability to store one more item that totally destroys any privacy that you have, your picture. There is no way you should need to provide your picture for an online purchase, again this should be something that the credit card company can provide (as most have in the past..simply be a phone call to you), and thus the web site doesn't need to provide any security measures that allow them to collect even more sensitive material of an individual.
If someone asks you for proof of id, send them either a) a picture of you wearing your favorite wookie mask. b) send them via snail mail a free complimentary stool sample.
NOTE: I won't be liable for you actually sending someone a stool sample.
This is slashdot material? Geeze. Tomorrow, I wonder if we are going to get a post on where someone ate lunch and who they ate it with. Get on the ball, already.
This doesn't at all suprise me that there was some catch with the 540. I messed around with one as well as some previous Jornada products, and I was particularly interested, but due to it being an HP product, forget it. I bought a ScanJet 4100C scanner about a year ago, and I wanted to look for drivers for it, other than Win98, and lo and behold, HP has canned it, and no longer plans to support it. It is a really decent USB scanner, too. All this says to me, is that if I was to buy one of these devices, I would simply have to chose another company, or really consider getting the Saint Song espresso, or perhaps their next generation product (if there is one).
Yeah, and the tons of 50 different box covers that Linux has due to the assorted distributions isn't any different than the 35 different versions of ICQ, thats variety. I like closed source becaue I like to eat!
No thanks, I think I am going to buy the professional version to endorse buying quality products. If you want to look at the source code, go work for the company, and then you can develop all you want.
I don't see what the big deal is. Most of these versions of Windows, whether it be Me, Netune, or whatever are available to technet subscribers for download. This just means someone downloaded a copy of it and spread gave it to a few friends. As far as Whistler goes, I don't think it will make a big difference for someone to choose to run it over regular Windows 2000. It will have the same amount of bugs, the only difference that the "Whister" technology presents is that it allows application DLL caching, which is just an enhancement to Windows 2000's file protection mechanism (which stinks by the way). This means that if an older generation Windows application is installed it takes the system files that the application wants to install over Win2k's system files, and caches them to a directory so that Win2k doesn't have its system files overwritten and that the application can still the files that it needs from its old installation. This way Win2k can protect and use its system files, such as DLL's, and the program can possibly function. The plus with this is that it should help getting games to run under Win2k. This won't however fix the already present problems of poor file corruption detection, poor usb support, amongst the other problems with Win2k. Windows 2000 does run alot better than WinNT 4, in alot of ways, especially in the business sense, but for the home it just can't cut it due to the lack of hardware and app/game support.
No, it will support Windows 2000, also. There are other companies in the works attempting to work out poting deals. Either by Blizzard doing the work or by some other company with an agreement. In the beta test only 95/98/ and NT4 will be supported. A mac release is sure to come later on in the year. But I sure hope that they will work out a deal to port the game to BeOS. I mean if they can release a botched up nasto version of Diablo1 for Playstation. I mean geeze, that is totally a waste.
Ah yes, but again, note that it is DOCSIS compliant, and if your cable area is not DOCSIS, then it would be useless to obtain one at this time. Where I live and in most surrounding states, the areas are not DOCSIS compliant, so if anyone does purchas one, make SURE to call your cable provider and see if your area is complinat to this. I use @home service, and even though their website makes it sound like they are DOCSIS compliant, they are not in all areas. If your area isn't compliant, it could take up to two years for them to be compliant.
No, its essentially the trend that people shouldn't have to buy stuff, but rather have the hard working people who create businesses and jobs give it away to them. While I applaud Ford's actions, I think Katz is a socialist.
I would like to see Diablo (as well as Diablo 2)..well for that matter the war/star craft series as well. Also, I would like to see the Command and Conquuer series ported as well. Subspace would be great, seeing as right now it is free to download and play. Grand theft auto, and any of the new games that come out would be nice. Darkstone would be cool. However, due to the fact that Blizzard is so unruly due to their past efforts to thwart porting of their games, I wouldn't mind seeing the others I listed ported first. I hate saying this as I really love Diablo, but principle is principle. Bah, I dunno, I am sure alot of companies are scared to move to Linux as a gaming platform because that is just another platform for them to have to spend time on. I would like to see at least one of these games ported to BeOS too, as I believe it would be a great gaming platform.
Well, I don't know what calling yourself a nation implies. But it sounds to me just like one of the typical online communities from way back when online environments were used via telnet. I mean this isn't anything new. Lambda MOO has been around for eons via telnet at lambda.moo.mud.org 8888, and it has a government, laws, games, and a programmable environmnet. Heck, some distros such as Debian allow you to download the server files so you can run your own. For that matter, there are different themed Moos similar to this one such as one that used to be at sensemedia.net out in Santa Cruz, CA. Actually there were three there with Snow Crash or cyberpunk (William Gibsonish) themes to them. I will say I will have to pass on the new idea, its already been done, just with different arrangements.
This is no great revelation other than company names are attached to it. I personally wouldn't have minded seeing Jabber being further investigated by companies.
Yes, but forget about the volume and magnitude of hardware inside, do the come in those cool and shnazzy cases?

I will throw my hard earned lettuce at Be as it is closed source, see there...they will make money.
Okay you can get it now (its now 9:00 Central). And there are around 5 to 7 mirrors (some not available til 11:00 A.M.). Go get it.
No thanks, I think I am going to buy the professional version to endorse buying quality products. If you want to look at the source code, go work for the company, and then you can develop all you want.
Why dont try their site:
www.be.com
tsk tsk...run it once, and then you will know.

I'll second the motion. Here here.
Its even cooler when you read your messages in subspace too (hint hint trith).
