Well, ok. I don't think you need a CVS directory in rc3.d, that directory should only contain symlinks to the actual scripts that are in init.d anyway. And I *know* there's no code that will break if you add a CVS directory to/etc/init.d.
In that case, devfs is broken. IMHO, programs should just look for the files that they need and ignore anything extra, that's the best way (provides the leanest code and the most flexible software... what's the point of adding code that says 'if (extra files) { die; }'? That doesn't accomplish anything).
Just go into your/etc/, do a 'mkdir RCS', and then start checking your config files in and out of RCS to edit them. There's no code anywhere in linux that says 'if there's a directory I don't recognize, then crash spectacularly', so just adding the RCS directory itself isn't going to adversely affect anything.

The only really tricky thing here is that the burglar stole the paper. He would be charged with theft in the sense of "hey! you stole my pad of paper!", regardless of what was written on it. Whether or not that would prevent his ability to publish the story or not, I couldn't say... Since the story would technically be in the public domain, I can't see anything stopping him from publishing it, unless there's some law I'm not aware of that states "you can't publish material that was written on paper that you stole from somebody, public domain or not"
The idea is that twm would be the easiest window manager to have just "get out of the way" and let firefox run in fullscreen mode.
I don't think twm would even be strictly necessary; it's probably possible to tell firefox to just start in fullscreen mode and use firefox itself as the "window manager", though that probably has disadvantages (off the top of my head, if firefox crashed or was closed in some way, X would exit, needing to be restarted... it would be easier to have a window manager that would just sit in the background and constantly relaunch firefox if it ever exits, avoiding the problem of X exiting).

Now let's say my house is burglarized and the novel stolen. That's theft, which is another matter, but so far copyright has not been infringed. Man, I'm paying $65CDN/mo for cable as it is (though that includes television & internet). I don't watch much television; if this is significantly faster than cable, I'd actually be saving money on a faster connection.

Actually, I thought that was the whole point of the new software economy created by open source... you get the software for free, and then you pay for support so that the developers can afford to create more software to give away for free.
Anyway, I'm not really familiar with 64-bit distros, but I'm sure you could do a fedora install or something with a 64 bit yum repository, and then you wouldn't have to pay for software updates. I'm sure you could do something similar with Debian! If there's one distro I can think of off the top of my head that I know will have an x86_64 port with a free repository for updates, it'll be debian (and debian makes a great server anyway).
As for your other comment about linux servers being far more prolific than linux workstations, that's exactly consistent with my expectations.
Red Hat, as we all know, dominates the US market. SuSE used to have a strong hold on Germany, and I think momentum is taking them through that to some degree. Mandrake seems to have plucked the right strings with the French Govt (major buys lately) and they will see some domestic growth there.
That makes sense, considering that RedHat is American, SuSE is German, and Mandrake is French (ie, all those governments would tend to prefer locally-produced software than foreign imports).
The way I see it, though (and this is my heavily biased opinion based on personal experience), there are only three distros worth mentioning: Fedora Core, Debian Stable, and Knoppix.
Fedora Core on the desktop because it's easy to install and bluecurve provides the user with a pleasantly consistent UI; Debian Stable on the server because it's the most "secure by default" linux distro I've ever seen; and Knoppix as a rescue disk or for converting Windows users;)
Of course other distros serve their own niche and it's a good thing that we aren't all forced to use the three distros I've chosen, what I'm really trying to say is that these three distros are the most important ones to me.
Wow, what are your sources on that? It's been my impression that linux has been massively popular on servers, but is just now making inroads on the desktop. I'd be very surprised if linux was 3x as popular on the desktop as it is on the server.
