Do not underestimate the general public. One similar example is mobile phone ring tones.
These things are cut down, chopped up, and shrunk to be just a bit of a song and customers are STILL willing to fork out when the whole thing is cheaper.
Your right, but the resolution of your camera phone/kitchen sink/wristwatch/glasses/life saver/holovision/pda/tablet/defib/computer device should be able to snapshot the pits and pores with ample megapixels left over for error correction.
Isn't win 2000/xp etc a completely different code base?
It is likely that something like this can happen, its the WHOLE reason why applying fixes to old slow bugfixed, tested real world code is in most cases better than recoding it from scratch.
Exhaustive regression testing should reveal things like this, but occasionally things get missed.
Besides, this is a local machine exploit - I have another "pressing the power button on a local machine results in denial of usage", should MS prevent that happening as well?
Then request the latest distros be mirrored on ftp on the universities servers.
Most seem to offer external access to these, so I don't see why the students cant use them themselves?
p2p helps the initial software developer to spread his software, but when 500 uni students are all using bittorrent, the bandwidth coming in and out of the system will be astronomical.
You think of yourself when you say p2p is good, system admins think of everyone (unless they are BOFH of course).
If they knew the filenames of the items being transfered, why the hell didn't they tell him to stop downloading the big juicy ones and go for a tiny piffly legally downloadable file?
Also, if they KNEW what he was downloading, they knew he was infringing copyright, which as you say IS illegal, therefore they would have given him that as a reason.
This just all sounds like its come from a PHB above who doesn't know what its all about.
It is not "Fair use" when google reads the news from AFP and then broadcasts it to thousands of people worldwide without giving AFP a share in their scoop.
News is news, you can get yours by visiting their website. Google couple sign a contract and start paying for redistribution rights, it would miraculously return then.
However, the first time google gives in and pays one news corp, it will have to pay them all.
This is slashdot, your wish will be granted.
And again on the third, and the fourth...
Mac mini is quite digestable now. Though I hear that eating Tiger fuzz gives you furrballs.
The kids mother is wanting to fight the case, but SCO are sure they are the father.

I read the initial blurb as:
Among the numbers, 7% of those survived hit the computer, 13% yell at first, and another 13% try to "sweet-talk" their computer.
I was wondering for a moment how many failed to make it.
Coooooool!
Back to old style computing.
I miss circuit diagrams and detailed information.

Wasn't the original LAND attack a Win95 vuln?

I agree with your main points though

With this bandwidth problem in mind, I would like to find a p2p app that shows preference to local users before getting data from outside.
It would shut a lot of these bandwidth arguments up and allow people to continue as they were.
Given the impending slashdotting its going to get, I don't think you will be alone.
Do not underestimate the power of a winnebago full of batteries.
Boot from a tiny partition of Linux on a CC sized cd. Give it duel use and let all customers have it available.
The other security features on the credit card could be put onto the CD to ensure authenticity.

Google have very wisely chosen not to pay
I would like a nice cheap 12-15inch mobile display for my computer here.
I don't care if its tethered, all I see if tft monitors for peanuts, and drawing tablets for even less, but touchscreen monitors are sooooo expensive.
Can I use a palmtop touchscreen as a remote extended desktop - a scratch pad for other things?
Not necessarily VNC style, but a blank paint pad just for drawing on leaving my main desktop filled with workable apps.
Don't forget the other lovefest companions Google, Apple & Linus Torvalds ;)
Cordless phones require power outlets to be switched on.
Obviously if a fire is large enough to force us out of the house, then it would be useless, but once outside the house we would be safe anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I have a mobile and use it, but I won't ever depend upon it for house emergencies.
why I don't even use even cordless phones in my home.
I will never give up that emergency landline even if it costs me more money in both installation and charges.
(I may be biased, we have needed it on two occasions in my life, both fire though)
2. the index has a lot of typos.
No problem, the website issued a global regex and a pot of tip-ex for all customers.
I was performing a strange custom regular expression on the book review, and discovered that it outputted the following:
"Regex coders are in league with the devil"
Who woulda thunk it!
Phew!
for a minute there, I thought you were going to say "this small animation when your system crashes".
My guess is people are going to publish them anyway.
Its like all the Windows folders that used to get shared on kazaa - not many in the wider world apparantly gives a damn about privacy.
