As far as you are concerned, is this a serious issue?

Yes, the bug is not unique to slashdot.

I have seen it and variations thereof (table adjustments) on numerous sites.

There appears to be problems in the layout elements during the load. Refreshing from cache because of a font change performs a full layout and weigh in of all elements, which on this run through are already downloaded, and available for examination. It seems to be mainly on the sites with iFrames or other dynamic (javascript insertion) elements. I havent noticed it on any simple html sites, only dynamic ones.

But, then again, I might be wayyyyy off track.

Our 2000 server is doing well.

Its been up for over a year now, getting abused by everyone here.

The only thing noticably wrong with it, the cpu counter on Task Manager totals out at 86%.

I don't know if its just going senile or if we need to kick it, but we are just playing it safe, and as long as it serves the data we need in a timely fashion, it can stay up as long as it likes.

Worst thing about booting my home machine (which is done every 3-4weeks see below) is when Installation programs come upand attempt to register themselves or whatever - theres always a moment of "whats it doing?" before realising I clicked No when it told me to reboot during installation.

Incidentally, the main problem I have with Win XP is with peering my GF's computer, if hers has been switched fully off, when it returns it makes mine stutter - freeze for 2 seconds, quick release, another freeze. Doesnt go away without painfully slow disabling of the network card, or a reboot. Never really bothered wasting time to look for a fix since its so infrequent.

Because I don't believe in rebooting a computer to run a specific program.

That blows, its like going back to ZX Spectrums with tapes.

I want to run what I need to run on the box I am on.
I expect it to take a matter of clicking and almost instantly having the software up.

I dont ever want to have to "reboot into windows to play a game". Fuck that! I haven't paid thousands of pounds for computer hardware over the years to regress.

    [/rant] Ahhh, I feel better now :)

    Ok.

If I need a (for instance) hammer, I might go to the store, and there will be a few different manufacturers hammers available.

They might individually have small additional bits and creature comforts, but they all do the same job. Any of the hammers will hit any nail into the wood.

However with Linux and open source in general, there are many distributions and projects, each trying to do the job, but each being different enough to be incompatible.

I am not against customisation and fitting software to your specific needs, for an excellent example of this in motion, the plugins for Firefox are perfect. All the developers are working towards a common goal.
We both get what we want without overwhelming normal users with unnecessary parts.

People are wise to stay close to the trunk versions of software. By all means, fork a project and expand on the features. But always try to consider how to re-merge the fork at a later date. Lets have the BEST of everything in one core repository.

We need to build on what others have done, expand a masterpiece, but lets keep it consistent.

because of the pages not being rendered correctly, people are refereshing their screens "twice or three times" and considering how slash is certainly not static, it can cause massive problems.

I know lots of people now use the font sizing thing, but its still a definate problem.

Everything happened as expected, the 680x0 code ran exactly as intended on the mac, all that was needed was a replacement exception handler for all the custom bits ("Ooops, your code tried to access memory 0x00123460, instead of throwing a Guru, its meant to be a macs' printer PageFeed or whatever it was meant to be").

Running an x86 emulation caused massive problems due to running a full cpu emulation and requiring multiple instructions per byte of PC code.

To fix the screen without redownloading, just increase, then decrease the font size (hold down [ctrl] + mouse wheel up then down).

  19. Re:Tortoises all the way down. on Universal Emulators Return · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have a sneaky suspision that this software relies on caching the local translated version of every known executable file.

The engine will likely allow template driven translations, and x86 linux to x86 windows could be byte for byte identical.

So it takes a moment to scan a file. We all run virus checkers in Windows every day, they scan our files and we dont notice.

THIS is the kind of comparisons it could feasibly say is 100%. Clicking on the Doom3 windows exe in linux loads up the preconverted translated file.

Now, different processor configs do work differently, and from the sounds of things they can't have done much work there. I think shying away from it by using Windows->Linux as their "test" operating system purely because they are the simplest.

This is like the Macintosh emulators that became available for the amiga. Both machines ran on 680x0 processors, and emulating a same period apple mac was a lot more usable than emulating an 8086.
