The problem with a central lookup dictionary is which dictionary do you use?
For compressing Shakespeare your english dictionary may be very efficient, but consider how it would cope compressing a BMP image, or a webpage. A general compressor (like winzip) has to be adaptive, and locking itself to specific dictionaries would not be optimal.
You are right about the encoding scheme, but its usually better to build the dictionary directly from the uncompressed data stream itself.
With a database, the biggest problem is not how compressed the data is, it is how quickly you can return results. With this in mind, clever algorythms and fancy hashing functions really come into their own (search for bloom filters), but thats moving OT.
Any scheme to compress it inhouse will usually increase the time to search. Most servers can compress the data between points anyway, there generally isnt a problem with it.
Oh no sir, shes not interested in the pretty pictures and table layout.
Its removing the geeky commentary and general nerdiness that pleases her.
The sadist in her was smiling and cheering all the time, for a while now shes complained that all the stuff I talk about is "pushing out the good stuff" and blames her forgetfulness on me!
Perhaps his mmorg inculdes a virtual terminal where he can read/.
Summoning up all your geek skills, you purchase an online plot of land, build a house, buy a virtual fridge and console, set your avatar color to "Pasty pale", buy some virtual twinkies and huddle away for months on end posting on virtual slashdot.
Speaking of mmorgs, my gf just bought Sims 2, so I've said goodbye to her for a few months, and am wondering how I can build a large diamond shaped hat.
Best feature for me has to be the highlighted text search (ctrl f).
Its like bringing the search results up from google cache.
My gf has fallen in love with the "Nuke anything" extension, she thinks its cool to make geek stuff go away bit by bit (she sits and wipes out bits of/.). There was a slight pause as I told her it was being deleted it from the entire internet;)

There have been similar problems with F&P sharing for a while now.
By default windows installs F&P on almost every network device it sees. With us at home, I have 2 NICs, one out onto my lan, and the other direct out into my router, windows had already assigned f&p before I had even connected. I have always been careful to disable it on the devices publically accessible, but know of hundreds of machines that would fail.
I was under the impression that SP2 cured all this, and certainly from my initial reviews that appeared to be the case. Each networked service has a scope, and for the majority, this is set as subnet only.
This is now in doubt, and when I'm a little less tired Ill read more.
Approximately 2-3 hours to get in a code building, comfortable state (Possibly less now, last time was on a slower drive).
All required applications are on, all accessories are ready, things are configured and look as I expect them. I am able to go on the internet and configure my system and user preferences after about 35 minutes, installers just run in the background.
I have everything prepared, though in the last 3 years I have only rebuilt this machine once, and that was just OS partition.
Once the main software is on, there is still the matter of which media should I restore... (considering full system rebuild - data is on a seperate drive and could survive a major OS collapse) - this machine has about 200gb of media, currently most things are backed up on cd, it would be the most time consuming part, and tbh, I would probably only put a fraction back if it came down to it.
"Out of the box" I would say thats quite good, Who wouldv thought it? (Mind you with so many people *needing* to reinstall, they needed to make it slick;))
I guess northern lads must be immune then, I don't see anything wrong with vb if used correctly:)
About the joe-jobbing, you've done enough to rile the spammers, so your obviously doing the right thing. If you manage to give just one spammer a bad day, then you deserve a pint!
For as long as users can access their machines there will be rouge trojans and virii.
I doubt any operating system could stop it. If you put too many hoops into software for the sake of security, the user will look elsewhere.
It won't be long now until Symantec or one of the other big players brings out a linux scanner and client. The novices will NEED something to watch over their shoulders.
With geeks like ourselves, we can run securely and sensibly on any operating system and not fall into the silly traps a novice would make.
I love open source software, the ability to find and tinker with software is amazing. Being free to download and use software like OpenOffice, Firefox or Linux itself is incredibly powerful.
Currently, I'm running windows XP fully patched up, set back behind a hardware router firewall. I'm looking at a webpage using Firefox and listening to Winamp.
It has everything configured exactly as I want it, it runs everything I want it to run without complaint or prompting. I can download or buy whatever software I need for it. Things are exactly where they should be.
What if somebody uploaded a browser theme that had a craftily designed texture or image?
Wouldn't that fall under the banner of exploitable?
Are these theme files automatically associated for download with Firefox?
Could somebody build a webpage offering downloads of these, or even get one onto the theme manager listing?
All pretty far out, but at least possible.
This is like finding out a nasty flu is going round. There is an exploit in something I use, I do not feel comfortable using it even though normal circumstances mean I am immune.
What if google forked directly from Firefox?
Would an adoption, or major sponsorship be beyond Googles reach?
Google branded mozilla engine sat on the worlds most used search engine could result in a MAJOR shifting from IE.
Artificial intelligence my ass.
I'm sure thats how goatse started.
"Are you sure I need to get a 486 up there?!"
Should we ask if it runs Linux? ;)
regardin something further up:
Ive got the recording of "Daisy" some1 posted further up this discussion on, its very spooky.
I could happily see myself sitting on an asteroid somewhere looking out onto a planetary ring sipping beers and this comes drifting over the airwaves.
Don't ya just love having an imagination!

Hold on a minute.
This might be just the entry point virus writers have been looking for.
Having unrestricted access to that guys C drive enables software to be deposited and potentially run.
This software can add itself to the list of approved applications for firewall access and carry on spamming anyway.
This is important.
Could we "accidentally" print out goatse on Bills computer.
Would he fix it then?
I'm sure he would notice his computer rebooting...
It doesn't happen. This install has never blue screened, never rebooted itself, never fucked up.
I routinely count uptime in weeks and months, and dont see problems.
All I can say is, if yours isnt working right, then I would check your drivers and hardware.

The thing is, its holding up better and returning faster than most sites under normal load!
I'm definately impressed.
Think I'll go hunting.

I am productive on this machine.
Why should I switch?
I wonder how many people are now diving into nortons config to double check their settings?
Already happening.....

. Not many people (as said before) are going to buy a LD player in order to play the LD editions, and lucas knows it
:)
Why bother with LD?
Are these available as torrents?
[Back from a quick search]
Yup, the original LD rips are available.

No, that was just the OSDN yearly outing. Taco just looks on with dismay as CowboyNeal goes mental!
