Shouldn't it be handled one step further upstream - ie when the mail is being transmitted initially.
In the same way that the server indicates error messages regarding destination addresses or transmission errors etc, couldnt the virus checker scan the data at that point, and only allow the data in if its clean?
Isnt Compact flash memory guaranteed for 50years or something?
They all come with lifetime guarantees etc.
Best advice with this archiving business would be to not put all your eggs in one basket and store the data on a range of formats tucked safely away in one or more safe deposit boxes.
Take it to your photo lab (or use your nice desktop printer:)).
If you want to guarantee your daughter or other person can see something in 18years, create a real live touchable album.
Providing God doesnt change the specification of human.eye() then all will be good.
But if the initial check were on the generated assembler tokens, then changing the variable name wouldnt matter would it? - you would just get lines of equal operation - at this point, not necessarily considered copied code, but certainly marked for follow up investigation.
I listen to the radio everyday essentially without paying.
They arent wicked infidel filesharers, they are merely listening to some music.
On that note, since recording the radio is acceptable - is passing the recording onto a third party also acceptable?
For instance, I live in the UK, but got interested in a Radio show only broadcast in the states - could I get a friend to record it and send it me?
Or is this governed by fair use?
If a person unknowingly purchases what later turns out to be a stolen item, the goods will simply be returned to the owner, and the original crook will be targetted.
This is NOT the same as purchasing a legitimate item, and then misusing it.
by the time this gets to court, she will be looking forlornley up from her wheelchair, with bunches in her hair and eyelashes batting.
Butter wouldnt melt in her mouth.
I dont know the specifics of the kazaa service deal that they signed up for, but paying money for, and making use of a service must push the blame from themselves to the crooks that sold the service?
I know it will bring up the category, but searching for other things works fine - just not for sex.
I'm assuming its to do with the index, it was simply the irony of it:)
If you want a laugh, you should try searching for "Sex" on Wikipedia.
1000's of us geeks and intelligent folks get together and create a huge information source, able to cross reference facts and details from all aspects of life, able to produce page after page of details on numerous subjects, and still a simple search for "Sex" reveals nothing.
My missus and I were in histerics about this last night, all because I asked her to choose a subject.
I guess all the anti-hype about us techies is true.
I am aware that searching for other things brings up results, but that just tickled us.

On that site, they have a link with countdown to impact. It has current simulated images etc, all very fascinating. The link is here.
My son wants to take the link into school and get the rest of the class involved - my god dont kids make u proud:)
i imagine that this could be treated similar to automatic gearboxes, which if i remember rightly, you could use and take your test in, but the examiners guided you away from them initially, so you understood the concepts.
If only the users would situp and take notice about things. Not just with the timestamp, but with all updates.
They have already brought out a firmware update for this, but yet again, as with Blaster and Slammer etc nothing gets done about it.
I do hope they can get this problem sorted however, because whilst this time its a university with a fat pipe, it could just as eaasily be another more sensitive address.
Bill,
In response to your observations, Broken routers that don't slow down just because you gave them an answer. Might as well give them the wrong time too, in case anybody ever notices.
I see your philosophy, but giving them the wrong time is identical to giving them the right time. They both require a packet to be sent back, so if your going to bother sending anything at all, why bother coding and maintaining a code tree designed to give incorrect results?
Because of the scope of the resulting problem, with hundreds of thousands of ill-behaved Internet hosts distributed world-wide, and because of the scale and unexpected nature of the flooding, with aggregate rates which could completely fill some network links, I felt that it was important to inform others and solicit advice from experts.
I think this explains his intentions. Dave Plonka seems to have his head screwed on the right way, and has managed to put together an intelligent easily digestable diagnosis of the problems and possible solutions.
If only SCO could be so clear.
The testing for certification came back reporting the issue.
They had this to say:
The Netgear FR114P relied on a separate NTP-based time source to set the current date and time, as it did not have an internal battery and clock. The product is hard-coded with specific NTP time sources that are accessible through the public Internet. Even after configuring the product to access a specific NTP server, the product still attempted to access its hard-coded NTP time sources, while simultaneously accessing the time source specified
I would say if this exe came via email it should be shot and burnt where it stands.:)
If microsoft had done that, we wouldnt have as many problems as we do.
We dont have to spend all our time planning and preparing for disasters, but we should respect those around us.
in just the same way we enjoy discussing issues n ripping the piss out of microsoft and sco on here, there are others that spend their lives away from computers ripping the piss out of their own mega-corporation/CB nutjob etc etc.
I think we shouldnt push out HAM radio just because its old, it is a proven technology, able to reach the parts other antenna's cannot (Yes even goatse would be impressed!).
Whilst people are right, in a disaster zone, the power may well be off, there will be no problem with the Ham operator listening to people worldwide..
The problem comes when the listening station in a safe location cannot hear the signals because his local power lines are working and intefering with the weak signal coming from inside the disaster zone.

wasnt that when they started dev work on it?

In other news, Doom 3 scales back to CGA

This one even goes over old ground and repatches the places other patches dont touch :)

I can already see the crowd of youngsters gathering and holding aloft their Air Rifle/Catapult/Spears

Who says Microsoft dont want to use it for us lot out here.
I'm sure one beurocrat or other has requested information of this nature.
Hell, the RIAA might need the information to catch peoples (8) illicit copyright performances (8)
