Selling crap from your attic has turned from a pursuit of the hardy Sunday morning car booter into the daily antics of millions of bored housewives throughout the world.
The time to load apps is still routed in the size of the exe and the work needed doing to run it.
Old systems didn't have bloat because characters were bytes and graphical entities were flat bitmaps. Nowadays we have jpeg encoded resources and double byte strings and all sorts of other magical crap. Programs were (mostly) written for one language and didn't need to adapt themselves to multiple systems.
I bet if you tried to work inside the restrictions of olders systems programs would fly along now, startup times would be low, response times would be low.
Just because we have faster systems does not mean we can add more bloat.
I find code can be exceptionally well presented but only if you look on a file by file basis. Most projects have nice clean stable blocks which to look at you just know its right.
Other parts resemble a jungle and have no logical flow and are horrid.
Whenever I am building an algorithm, it goes through the numerous rebuilds, after initially getting it working each one has more and more order until it looks like it will win a race. If the boss comes in and sees working code though, they don't understand this prettyness and will expect it to be shipped.
I would actually like a small amount of rumble on my mouse. A little quiver when I hit a boundary or bump when I am over an active area would be great.
The wiimote shows this effect quite nicely, just put it in the mouse.
In the MSDN documentation for.NET Compact Framework Data Providers there is a small note:
Note This feature has been designed to be used in conjunction with a prerelease version of an anticipated successor to Microsoft Visual Studio.NET. Check the documentation accompanying the commercially released version for any updates.
Now it took a while to parse that and I decided that I might possibly in the future write some code for it but only if I cannot find a better IDE/ and dev system.
MS have really started to come apart at the seams.
Since most people are talking about terrorism, the greater majority of terrorist attacks have involved some form of public transport between planes, trains and automobiles aren't cars the least of the trouble?
This sounds more like an additional taxation on driving (exactly what they are proposing for Manchester England, and what is already in use in London.
Both you and a sibling both think the same thing but no my missus doesn't do sleep kung fu.
It occurred when I was about 12 years old. My bed had a large duvet tucked under the mattress, I used to sleep with one leg hanging into it (it was cooler than the rest of the bed).
I soon learnt that I could not turn over in this arrangement. 1 week in traction and learning what happens to the pain when I reach up and pull certain wires is nice. Trying to stand up afterwards was fun in itself. Having a plaster the entire length of leg removed in one go is interesting (and no I am not talking about a cast, this was a fucking huge elastoplast)
Keeping up to date on a few sites is a good practice, and as long as it didn't interfere with work I would allow it in my office. I have discovered many important things whilst reading the headlines on my regular rotation.
Whether it be battening down the hatches for an internet storm or updating software we use its invaluable for at least some team-members to keep their ear to the ground.
Well I noticed the part about him asking for IT managers walking in the office. Since I am not a manager I decided to be a bit OT on purpose (I had actually written a full note about my morning schedule but abandoned it in favour of a fart joke).
Seriously, the first thing I do in the morning is fart.
Its a natural event and usually followed by my internal body check (quick overall run over major areas - helpful after waking up with a dislocated leg when I was younger...)
From a technical basis, its not the wrapping long paragraphs that has ever been an issue, its displaying and formatting tabulated information correctly without over-typing or making it look stupid.
I doubt its the reason is because of MS, logically its probably more like laziness on the part of the developer/company "DirectX exists and it hits 97% of the population. It works well, its easy to code and we can make money quickly"
Only this year have I seen a shift away from Microsoft, between.net, the later editions of Office and now Vista MS seem to have raised the annoyance level with users and developers. They have taken a well developed and understood formula and practically shot themselves in the foot. I know its going to be better in the future as machines get more capable and MS learn from their mistakes, but damn if I am being forced to change I might as well look around at what's available.
I didn't actually know about the combined GL/AL/SDL combination but as you say it covers the bases I would be concerned about.
Its similar in the coding arena, I am being pushed away from classic vb and having.shit forced down my throat. Mono is looking attractive right about now for my cross platform development.

I saw a glimmer of hope from the worst offender recently.
Is Microsoft learning from Web standards mistakes?
do not underestimate the bandwidth of a harddrive being passed to the friend next to you.
Isn't it possible that after submitting this article he found out more information?
How exactly do you submit a retraction for a slash article?
I would rather have Unicorn posting his own update than having someone ripping the original to pieces.
His(her/it) actions are commendable in my book.
How is that any different to full windows?
Cos I'm crap and fail at English obviously.
Good job I am a software developer and not an English teacher isn't it?
ffs, nitpicking git :P

Haven't people been saying the footprint of Linux is a shitload less than Windows bloat.
You simply don't need the extra on linux.

just stupid, of course we know its plenty.
