for the most part... Its all about short term costs.... and its impossible for MS to compete with Free to impliment today... and as more and more people even do partial linux conversions the "Tech Savvy support base" will increase and costs of maintaining these systems will decrease... and if it wasn't for security patches most linux systems look after them selves(which will change when linux is more so in the mainstream.)
Maybe they could produce "SP-2 Pirate Edition" which would just contain the security fixes and no enhancements?
Thats Exactally what they (MS) don't want... But a substancial ammount of the user comminity wants exactally that... No more freaking enchancements that slow down and destablize the OS and lock them out of useability (DRM ect).
Aparently any "Desktop" App or Plugin that 80+ plus of the user base uses they want domination over.. so They want Everyone to have their updated products...
I would love to see transcripts of any would be court challenges...
"So Let me get this right... You want to be able to obfusicate the contracts you have your customers sign so they are unaware of all the fees involved in using your service... And when they decide to terminate service you insist that its the best for the customer be confused by the bill and your "Recovery" fees be mixed and mingled in with taxes and other state charges so the customer is unaware of moneis your company is reciving from them? "
"Um Yes!"
"Is there anything else? Maybe we should reword the law so you are able to have a black piece of paper with a hole in it so they can sign the contract and are unable to read a single word? wouldn't that suit your purpose better?"
"Wow That would be great!"
"Yes atleast people would know they are gonna get screwed instead of being decived into thinking they are getting a deal when they actually are gonna end up paying more"
Considering one full days downtime will cost us an estimated 80,000 $$$, the sprinklers have been high on my priority list to push for change
Umm.. That is a no brainer... Get your GM show him the sprinkler in the server room and see.. "We need money to make it go away".. if he doesn't understand ask for his cell phone and ask him to follow you to the bathroom.. He should ask quite quickly what your doing.. then tell him your going to show him what happends when electronics get wet.. he should get the hint quickly and you should have all the monies your need to atleast get the wet system out..
Also if you make it to the crapper with cell phone in hand and he is still with you... You might not want to actually throw it in there without expressly telling him whats gonna happen to his cell phone... But using anyother device than his cell phone well not work quite as well.. as his cell should be on the "Very Important" list in his mind.
One of the things alot of people seem to be forgetting is that the baby boomers are about to hit retirement... There are a massive quanity of senior position jobs that are about ot open up on the market and we (Us/.ers) need to fill them to slow and stop this type of madness from happening... Alot of us need to start working on our management skills so we are able to fill these soon to be vacant jobs and start filling decision making positions within companies.
Stop or fine the Finical model for Spamming... Make it Plain and flat Illegal to pay money to firms that do not adhere to Proper code of conduct rules (Opt out that works within 24 hours.. Users Rights for a request not to pass thier email address to other marketing firms.. They must Log the source of where the adress was obtained.. ect... and fines must be paid or CC accounts be suspended ect making it more difficult for companies to collect monies from customers... fines should be based on # of complaints like a 1$-5$ per complaint of UCE or something similar..) Effectivly there would be no US based spam any more.. Then all the spam that would come it would be from china and the like and as the black list gets built china will be cut off from the American market forcing them to secure Email access to the US).. Which there could be a business model for that aswell... have Email relay service in the US for countries that have been completely blacklisted because of the quanity of spam from their pipes.
Marketing... That is the Evil... Open-Source or not its marketing that does the evil.. Marketing makes money and aparently at any cost money must be made in large sums no matter the methods... Open-Source/Closed-Source if someone dumps money into marketing its all the same to those marketing so tactics will be by large part the same marketing has little to do with the actual product.. Thats why we have this cool term called VapourWare... thats what happends when marketing jumps too far ahead of production you wind up with a demand for a product that doesn't exsist... Does it matter if its Open Source or not... No...

Your Use of Bus and Star Topologies is misleading on how newer broadband connections work.. xDSL is not dedicated to the CO.. Its only dedicated to the nearest concentrator which may or may not be over capasity.. by the time it hits the CO your looking at atleast a 1000-10000+% under supply of upstream bandwidth reguardless of your broadband medium... any salesperson mentioning the word dedicated when he is talking about broadband should be shot... Its the internet and by its nature is a shared medium. its moot to use the work dedicated because it all combines into a pipe that cannot supply every connection if each connection were at peak utilization.. Not even getting into packet switching capasity which is by the large part the real bottle neck when you look at a carrier class connection. The whole debate about cable is faster or xDSL being faster is a moot point its all based on engineering, design, and quality of the "Plant"... I can easily find areas where cable is faster than xDSL and visa versa...
Also cable has a vast frequency available to utilize and can be setup using multiple freq's creating a virtual star topology in an area... Cable is best described as a hybrid network as you can find nearly every style of network architecture someplace in cable systems.
"The company's legal assaults on IBM and Linux users dominated 2003's tech headlines and shook up the open-source community. No other IT topic inspires such fervent debate, fear, uncertainty and doubt.".
It never shook the open-source comunity at all... They attacked Linux not the Open-Souce community.. This comment is way off... But the rest is just out of context... the Fervent debate, fear(Hmm thats a strong word... Maybe fear doesn't fit in at all), uncertainty and doubt... all the rest except maybe fear are completely out of context.. The way its worded makes you belive that SCO would win.. but on the other hand all the debates were on how long SCO would last before they went bust.. all teh unceryainty and doubt was about SCO's legal proceedings having any success at all:)...
Well the problem isn't with the monopoly itself... Its the power they wield to keep the playing field in thier favor and to stifle and eliminate competeion... as of late MS is focusing on raising the barrier of entry for all would be competeitors... Look at linux.. Its the only OS that can actually stand up to face Windows followed by its support of OSS... MS is doing everything it can to stifle OSS and compatibility with its next gen of OS... I am sure longhorn will bring in a review of the anti-trust case against MS and if they succeed in keeping linux down they will have to take measures that were previsouly thought as unnessary...
You see these suits they are loosing are fining them as Punishment/Deterrents from continuing these practices.. They look at this and say its the cost of buriness and pass the price down to the customer totally defeating the prurpose of the fines... It may not be written in the books but its something that should be put infront the the courts soon so that MS will get the black and white that their business practaces are unacceptable and to start playing on a level playing feild with everyone else. and something needs to be done about patents sooner rather than later aswell
Actually... Next gen P2P network could use unsecured unpatched windows boxen to hide whos shareing and doing what... That would cause alot of heat on redmond to secure their OS.. past and present:)
Encryption could be easy as inverse bits and like you said use some invite only system to distribute decrypt keys and they will have to break the DMCA inorder to see whats being passed.... But these new networks should not be "Music Only" ect... they should be open to all types of files so the legitimate use of the network is higher than restricted use (unless its for work that can be shared legally:0)
Well if the US would stop holding up the bandwagon Letter and legal would thier closest Metric Equiv.. and you would probably still use those terms to describe them... and Canada is metric.. its required to have metric on everything that has measurements (also in French:) )... We live too close to the US which wont adopt Metric so we understand both systems..
When we get Fiber to the home and the upstream bottleneck is removed from highspeed (even just for local transmit purposes) you will probably see alot more of this type of model become available.. where its distributed... It will be alot cheaper for the provider to have some sort of system in place to track who has what on thier PVR (Ya ya I know.. everyone wants their privacy but its getting to be a thing of the past... Everyone invades now and there isn't alot you can do about it... Its the future.. we are gonna either have to kill people or learn to live with it:) ).. But high demand stuff doesn't need to be stored in a central location and a P2P environment could be setup quite cheaply to exceed speeds and availablity that could be provider if the provider housed all the content all of the time... They would just need to store it short term then as demand decreases so would the avilable copies.. and on teh other hand they could easily entend how long something is available by people that are collecting series on their PVR's ect...
Yeah but the sad part is that your 50 cents a day after the show gets its cut is not enough to pay for the medium its broadcast on. Most likey you will still get stuck with some Min monthly cost plus what ever per show.. the boardcast mediums are quite pricey to maintain not to mention the network to push content to providers needs to get paid for also... You need to open your range of view up a bit when you start thinking of "Benefits" of selective on whats is dilvered to you to watch to drop your monthly bill. Your only hope is for one of your off air locals to pick it up:)
Looks like we are starting to get close... with nearly doubling the efficency I bet ya you will see a bunch of solar houses pop up... if they have go up by another 25% I bet ya the demand could drop the price enough to start solar neighbourhoods..
They can't do much with a IP in canada... ISP don't have to reviel the sub of that IP without a court order... and courts don't hand them out generally.. only in extreme circumstances:)
Sounds like the plan would be to hack up a few 60-100 Disc changers to load into a burner ect... That would probably be your best bet... Thats where I would start anyway... even in 1000's of discs to do it would be Not horrifically bad to do 100 at a time... But I do imagine in 6-7 years We should see a replacement for the good ole CD/DVD so you will most likely be looking a something you would use 2 maybe 3 times tops before its time to go with the next generation in low cost storage.

Arn't suposed to would be the proper term :)
Not to mention if you have didtheyreadit.com in your hostfile with your loopback.

Extended warranty is probably void when you escape the atmosphere.. They tend to Imply things like that in their warranty claims :)
if I remember right the Stien also had built in cooling
What people want to store for long term even kills the BFOH's use the network as storage ploy :)
