I know how you feel but all these companies are exactly the same; the same lawyers, managers etc float between them and so it's sheer luck that this or that company causes a problem in whatever territory at whatever point in time. I did remember the incidents you refer to at the point I ordered my Sony phone, but it was that or the Nexus (I've had build quality issues with them) or a HTC (usb socket failed 13 months in and they charged me to get it fixed), samsung (terrible android support for previous phones) etc etc. Boycotting a large company like that punishes yourself; they'd never notice in a million years.

Well, that's kind of the point. Companies should be forced to state up front how long the phones are going to be kept up to date (from both a security and Android version point of view) and if they don't they can be sued for breaking the terms under which people bought the phones in the first place.

No-one expects Microsoft to provide updates for windows xp, but they do expect them for 7, because of the published support timelines. Android needs the same; it's no different just because it's not a desktop or a laptop.

You've got it backwards. If you say up front "we're only interested in open source solutions" then only people with open source solutions, or people prepared to create one, will enter. There's absolutely no reason to do non open-source software except to attempt to make more money out of something but one company making money isn't the only reason these systems are designed and created. It's better for everyone if it's easy/possible for other people/companies to be able to continue running a system when the original company no longer exists, or has changed its focus.

If it's only an online thing, then just changed your online presence. I create a new account on pretty much every site I use every year or so - or just stop using them - to help avoid stalkers, spys, people tracking my usage patterns etc. Just do that. You lose nothing except a few minutes a year and whatever reputation you've earned (in the rare case that there's any reputation system in place).

I seriously doubt random people are scanning the internet for people they don't know and have had no interaction with and who've been doxxed so they can then turn it into a real world problem of some sort; it's just spotty little bedroom boy virgins with internet access and nothing better to do.
