  1. Re:An important difference on Linux vs. Windows: What's The Difference? · · Score: 1

I think you're all missing the point of the parent's post.

On a fresh-out of the box install, on Linux you have:

    1. A compiler (GCC), ready to use as soon as you login

    2. A choice of windowmanagers to pick from

    3. Plenty of games, not just Solitaire, Hearts, Freecell, and Minesweeper

    4. Networking tools as part of the base install

    5. Powerful shells to choose from in the base install

This is all part of any Linux distribution and ready to install... as opposed to Windows where you have to go out and download extra utilities.
EXTRA being the key word, meaning you can't get those features straight from the Windows install CD.

Have you ever read game reviews in Maxim, Stuff, and FHM? They generally give better reviews to games that contain the 3 G's. Actually, those are pretty much the only games they review.

Let's face it... who really makes up a large chunk of the videogame market? Young guys with money. The same guys who are getting game and music reviews from Maxim, Stuff, and FHM because they'd rather subscribe to a magazine that has an abundance of T&A rather than Game Informer or EGM.

Chances are, they're gonna spend their hard-earned cash on a game that features plenty of T&A as well. Especially if it's got a good review in their favorite magazine.

  5. Re:Personal Experience on Apple Users Threaten to Sue Over iBook, iPod · · Score: 1

I bought the same exact iBook at the same exact time you did. The display did the same exact thing, and before I was having kernel panics when I booted up (OS X telling me to restart after reaching the login screen).

I orignially thought this happened because I dropped it, but the kernel panics started a week or so before I dropped it, so now I'm not so sure.

I sent the iBook in to get fixed the first time, and it came back with display issues (vertical red lines on certain areas of the screen like the dock, icons, and anything with white or light grey). I called an Apple rep and he was really trying to help, suggesting everything from reinstalling OS X to removing the memory and wiping the harddrive before reinstalling everything. That didn't work, so I sent it in again.

The laptop came back with the same problem. I called up Apple, and the tech support guy made it seem like I was making things up... saying things like "hmm... riiiight" "are you sure? because it says here we fixed that problem" "yeah, well we replaced the logic board twice already, so..." After 20 mins or so, I got him to make another dispatch order and I sent it to get fixed.

It turns out it was the logic board, display, and the cable connecting the display to the logic board. Like I said, I did drop it... but I wouldn't think dropping it would damage all of that. Plus, the original problem of the flickering looks a lot similar to what these people are complaining about.

Also, not all of the tech support guys are jerks. If you get one, and arguing with them gets you nowhere, just hang up and call again. Maybe you'll get someone who will genuinely try and help you out.

Lets say, the iPod had the choice of using 2AA batteries. Lets's say you got your AA's at $0.50(too high? too low? i dont have to buy them). Lets's see what youve paid for JUST BATTERIES over the "300-500" charge average lifetime of apples built in battery:

err, $300-$500... I made my math too easy =(

Yeah, but there's a difference between spending $6.00 on a 12 pack of batteries every month or two and forking over $100 at one time.

It may be more expensive in the long run, but it's hard for some people to scrape up $100 the moment their battery craps out.

Then again, other companies who have tried for the high-end portable gaming consoles that were comparable to current generation home consoles have failed miserably. Think of the TurboExpress. It was nice, had an optional TV attatchment, and could play the latest TurboGrafix home console games... but you had to use 10 AA batteries that provided a whopping 2 hours of solid gameplay action. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to shell out money for a "portable" gaming device that I can't fit into my pocket and won't last me an entire flight to Germany and then some just because it's "high-end" and provides fancy options. High-end or not, they'll need to up that battery life to be a real contender.
