I think this is exactly what Microsoft means by counterfit. I don't believe they're going to the trouble of tracking down every warez version of XP. They want the Mom and Pop stores that are selling computers withouth the real, licensed version of the OS. These shops are selling Windows without paying for it. I would imagine that there are quite a few small shops selling computers with "counterfit" installs. I don't know how common it is, but I'm sure it happens a lot.
I think your right. If the trademark isn't in the same catagory, it shouldn't help out Apple too much. It is kind of cool to see Red Hat offering the help anyway.
Tigers are boring. Now Ligers are pretty much my favorite animal...they're bred for their skills in magic.
I think everyone's off an a tangent here. If time travellers were to show up to the convention...I would imagine it would change the world in a large way. All of the media would write about it. It wouldn't be a minor footnote in history, but a major event. As long as society doesn't collapse, I think they'd remember that date even 1000 years into the future.
And what if no one shows up? I guess there aren't time travellers....or there's a temporal prime directive.:)
It also looks like a cheap way to get free PR. How many people are reading stories about this? Slashdot, Neowin...I'd say that a lot of people are rushing to see the screenshots while they're up.
I'm not sure what else this release will have going for it, other than the GUI. They've stripped so many features off of it, the eye candy seems to be the 'big thing'. I can see why they wouldn't want ugly screenshots floating around.
Zahn's books were the best by far. The biggest problem with that are the actors. I could be wrong, but I don't think fans want to see different actors playing the roles of Skywalker, Solo, etc... Maybe when CG is improved (10 years), we'll see a movie based on that trilogy. It would be cool.
I bet a lot of fans would get behind Zahn consulting/writing for the show. It's too bad Lucus didn't make Zahn's books into movies earlier, instead of the prequels.
I agree. I read most of the novels, and I could see a lot of plot lines that would work well for television. Not many without the main characters, but it could be cool if handled the right way - and by that I mean, not directed by Lucus.
Gallactica was pretty good for its first season too.
"The good thing is that when I'm cycling, I'm in so much pain that there's a limit to how much I do it. Computer games, on the other hand, has no such mechanism."
I distinctly remember having sharp pains after going a whole day without eating when Final Fantasy was released on the Nintindo. Seriously though, I can see how a game can interfer with other priorities....Starcraft anyone? When I get busy, I uninstall my current addiction and don't think about it. Computer games are fun, but they can sure be a time suck.
"I know Microsoft can/should be able to do better than this."
I still remember the XP commercials with people flying to some Madonna song. I'm not sure they can do better. They spent all of the PR money fighting OSS.
"Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me." - Vizzini
I actually think personalized searches would save a lot of time. I would imagine, with this search history, the could use something very similar to Google Sets to implement it.
Space travel pushes our need to innovate and leads to many inventions that we enjoy in our normal lives. The need to understand where we are, how we got here and how the universe works doesn't seem like a trivial goal. There are always things we could give up to help the needy. I could be donating my time, instead of posting on/., but oh well. Now if you're talking the tradeoff between the ISS vs. the Super Collider, I could agree.
While the privacy issues were the first thing on my mind, something else occurs to me now. If Google is keeping track of search histories, aren't personalized searches the next step. If Google can tell what type of sites you like to use, couldn't they lean the search one way or the other?

If we could manage to figure that out, we'd have spam licked too.
..ummm...[cough]...I think the lawyers said we have to call it Linspire now. I believe the paid around 20M in a settlement.
Shouldn't this be modded Ktroll?
/sorry

Actually, I think they rotated it in the other direction...that would be -270 degrees.
Troops was excellent. I haven't seen that in a couple of years. LOL.
"How about a musical? "
...pretty sure that was done on the Simpsons.

"several dead tauntauns were found in the desert of tatooine, having been beaten to a pulp after dying of starvation."
I can see it now - CSI: Tatooine.
Aren't there enough spinoffs already?
When I started the article, I was kind of hoping it would be based off this spoof. Ewoks are still funny.

I was thinking, "The Oregon Trail." I guess that would be boring now.

"no cost whatsoever to the consumer of the service"
Dude, it was just tax day a week ago. Someone has to pay for the "free" services.
Remember, Gator(or whatevertheyswitchedtheirnameto) isn't spyware either...they said so.
I lie about personal information all the time. It's my small way of messing up the statistics.

It reminds me of PDA's in general. They're cool. I want the newest features.
/using my Ipaq as an ebook reader /sorry about the fark slashes

This will drive the seo guys crazy.
