I thought contrails *lowered* the temp? Didn't we see a lowering of the temps in the US when plans stopped flying after 9/11? They are white clouds that reflect heat back out.
1kilobit/second? where are you getting that number? *sniff* Smells like it came out of your butt. Best case they should only have to transmit key press/release, mouse press/release, and perhaps point of view changes.
Don't get me wrong.. its still a big problem, and consolidating that information for quick redistribution to the other clients is a real pain... and something to avoid..:)
Atlhough this comment from the article begs for further clarification:
"We intentionally sampled a subset of files that were likely to be similar to each other and that we expected people to be interested in downloading."
Interesting.. The three types of "similar" files were things that were mis-labeled, in a different language, had errors, or packaged differently....
I wouldn't have expected those 4 cases to add up to anything significant. However I guess it only takes 1 mostly similar file to double*ish* the speed of your download.. so it doesn't take much to have a big impact on your download..
Anything compressed/encrypted won't work so well. Unless it is just a mislabeled peice of music. If you google around for Low Bandwidth File System (LBFS) you'll see what technique the article is really talking about.(disclaimer -- I didn't read the article either) Variable Length chunking will handle cases where new data is inserted halfway into the file, however with compression that extra data will end up changing the whole damned file.
I dunno how to give any credible evidence of this one. I just googled and found out my old boss is working at Intel and has even published a book. He might or might not remember. hmmm
What would make you believe it happened? Anything? are they just Myths to you? Have you ever worked tech-support?
I'm sure some of them are made up.. but I'm also sure that some are not..
Well the "power isn't working" is certainly a classic I've heard many times. I don't know what I could say to convince you that I really experienced this. Maybe where I worked? they are out of business now..:( Software Solutions in Folsom CA. Well -- I could have worked there and still made it up. hmm.. well.. I can't make everyone happy!
It was pretty dang akward dealing with the woman, after all she had drug me through for it to be something as simple as that. The people in the store were pretty sympathetic with me as I was having such a hard time dealing with her.
Customer had been angry from the start. Don't know why. Just was that way. We fixed her computer up nice and new and sent her home. About 30min later she calls. Screaming and yelling. "you broke the computer..".. lots of profanity and swearing. After awhile I got her to say that it wasn't even "booting". I asked if the power LEDs were on. Took another few minutes to get the answer "no" through all the yelling and screaming. They weren't. I asked if she could confirm that it was plugged into the powerstrip, she said "no".. more screaming and yelling at me. At this point every customer in the store is listening on my side of the conversation as they were all hushed and no longer really shopping. I asked why she couldn't check the powerstrip... more swearing.. finally she said something like.."okay whatever..".. and set the phone down. She came back and I asked "was it plugged in okay"... "I don't know I had to get a flashlight.." more yelling and swearing.
"Why did you need a flashlight?"
"The power is out and I can't see under the desk"
She immediatly realized her mistake and hung up.
The call lasted about 20minutes and was the most difficult customer I've ever had to help out over the phone.
Now we had another guy who was 6 foot 5 and had real anger issues -- threatened to beat me up when I refused to let him return DOS without all the disks. However that was in person, so it isn't on topic..
So that the AI engine could learn from experiences on each players machine to get better. I.E. I want the AI to learn from me, and upload those results to a server, where it gets merged with data from other players.. and then redistributed back down.
Oh okay.. maybe it won't be "fun" for the buyers of the game.. but it would be *neat*..:)
and have found myself buying these:

I am listening to the ancient Egyptian stuff now. Very entertaining and interesting. Also liked the classical mythology & symphony lectures.
I'm setting up redudent storage at home. After looking at all the RAID options, limitations and what I really needed I decided that a nightly backup of my data onto another drive on another system will be very redundent, prevent human error (me deleting things), and be cost effective. (since I already have another machine). Backing up a nightly image of your drive would restore things faster, but not help against human failures. (which I think are more common then drive failures.. but I guess it depends on the hardware and humans involved;) ).
Google around and you will find all kinds of arguements for IDE not being a good RAID solution. (mostly write cache related).
Stop playing online games with others. Local games tend to be less addictive thus allowing you to play less often. This also lets you be more flexable about when you can play because your online buddies aren't depending on you.
I found this to help manage my game addiction. Now I even play some adventure games with the SO.. (Syberia as of late)..
You think by now. Someone would have started selling these solid state ramdrives with empty RAM sockets & simply support cheap off the shelf SDRAM. No firmware limit of 4gigs or anything. Just a bunch of SDRAM slots on the logic to address them.
Is the hardware *that* expensive?
Its all about the screen. I have been reading ebooks exclusivly for the last 2 or 3 years. I really like my palm t3 for its nice large screen.
Its nice not to have a nightstand light keeping the wife awake when I read at night. Also nice to always have a book with ya when your get bored and have a minute or two to kill.
I think there are plenty of PDAs that will fulfill most of your requirements... cept maybe price.. cuz you didn't say how much you wanted to pay..:)
"But then you read that a dual processor machine is on the horizon makes me wonder if LongHorn isn't targeted for desktops."
I think it said.. dual core.. Hyper-threading is already a form of that.. (or at least step in that dual core direction)..
It'll get there..
I have an old... gosh.. 1987? 1988? something like that.. Zeos branded VGA monitor. Works great! It gets interlaced at anything above 640x480.. but still works fine!

First person games give me motion sickness..:( anyone know if it offers a 3rd person perspective?
Good thing IE doesn't have any encryption built into it....
Usually Genetic Algorithms produce numbers, and Genetic Programming produces a program.

I wish my English skills were as good as my typing skills. When you read old stuff -- writers were so much more elequent...

Just set your clock back. Worked for me and lots of others I know. Take as long as you want to get the patch over your 56K

Is that effected? imagine if people start spamming that content...
Sounds like Microsoft is trying to slow down the startup of Java programs!
