Yes, but these nonstandard plurals generally come from applying an existing rule in an unexpected place.

You'd sound fairly silly (or like you couldn't type right) if you pluralized "Unix" as "Uniices", with two i's. So why stick a superfluous "i" on "viri", which is what you get from applying the us-i rule? That's how you pronounce it anyway - people talk about "vie-rye", not "vie-ree-eye".

How the heck many times does this have to be pointed out? Every time someone rants about hypocrisy on Slashdot, it's about "well, I saw one guy on one article saying (X) is bad, and now on this article someone's saying (X) is good, so why aren't they agreeing?" There's a bunch of different opinions here on Slashdot, and articles on different topics are commented on by different sets of people, who may very likely be weighted toward a certain opinion.

For example, someone who thinks the GPL is the One True License, and thus refuses to touch BeOS, wouldn't post here unless he wanted to be a troll.
Someone who reads an article about closed-source games is probably a gamer, and will accept closed-source so they can get their gaming fix.
Meanwhile, an article on a closed-source version of some Linux program, which people were pushing for an OPEN-source version of, could very well cause open-source supporters to post.

Finally, you say, "I'm tired of Unix getting beat up on by you people..." Which people? There are people here who like proprietary Unices and people who hate them. Lumping all of Slashdot into some generalization involving "you people" is where you get the impression that there's hypocrisy.

Oh, okay, so he might as well remove any differences between factions in Alpha Centauri. In the next Civ game, he should make Tanks just as strong as Musketeers, so he doesn't give the impression that he'd like to crush some underdeveloped country. And delete the World War II scenario, because the Germans don't like being portrayed as the bad guys.

Wait a minute. Scratch that, he should just disable combat completely, because war is bad.

    (end sarcasm)

Give me a break. To make a decent strategy game, you have to reduce things to simple rules. Yes, that means that certain groups of people are reduced to simple rules. But Sid makes GAMES, not political speeches.

And meanwhile, let me correct a couple of things. Unless you hacked the configuration files, there were no Arabs in Civ II. ANY country could have fanatics. In Alpha Centauri, white Christian Americans were portrayed in an unflattering way, and I'd hardly call them a "minority". And the time portrayed in Colonization was a racist time in history - I'm fairly certain that Indians were not given "equal opportunity" jobs - and to deny that would be revising history.

You were just looking for some pseudo-insightful reason to spout off on Slashdot.

You asked about XFree86 4.0 - I've been running it since the day after it was posted on Slashdot.
The installation - well, all I can say is that it worked. X takes longer to compile than any program I've ever seen, so if the compile had failed I might have put a dent in my monitor, but lo and behold, it worked.

Configuration was kind of messy. The only available program to make a config file so far is 'xf86config' (yes, without capitalization) - a text interface with no way to back up when you make the wrong choice except to start over. By the time I finally got things right, I had the keystrokes for the first 10 or so screens memorized.

One of my configuration choices was wrong in the end - I thought an Intellimouse was a Microsoft mouse with a wheel, which is what I have. It's actually just classifed as a PS/2 mouse.

I skipped the accelerated server configuration and went with XF86_SVGA instead, because the documentation about it was horribly inconsistent.

When it was done, I had to manually edit the XF86Config file to add stuff like setting up my mouse wheel, and taking out all the superfluous screen mode information so it wouldn't start in 640x480. (XFree86 3.3.5 did that too - if you had more than one possible mode, it would start up in the worst one. Why?)

Anyway. After all that was said and done, I only had a few problems. The Alt keys didn't work in Sawmill, because they're now apparently really called "Alt" instead of "Meta". I redefined all the hotkeys involving Meta and it worked.

There are minor improvements - It runs at 1152x864 at a decent refresh rate, though I assume that's from having to put in the video card and monitor settings myself instead of letting Xconfigurator do it. The mouse no longer goes nuts when I switch virtual consoles. The mouse pointer moves smoothly even when the CPU is being heavily used.

But I don't see any huge improvements. Maybe that's what I get for not using an accelerated server. Anyway, I hear fonts are supposed to work better, but I've had enough negative reinforcement against it (if you use an X login manager, like gdm, and X can't find every single one of its fonts, the computer crashes hard) that I can't even conceive of touching another fonts.dir file in my life. I don't care how it's done, but if I can put fonts in a directory and have them work automatically, and maybe skip the ones that don't work, THEN I'll say that X has good font support.
