It really is amazing that the older the temperature record the more likely it is to be adjusted down, to the point the authors of that paper said "The revised record is totally inconsistent with published temperature patterns"

  3. Oh and while I didn't state this explicitly it was implied. The earth not being transparent also means it has to be high enough above the horizon to not be blocked by the earth or the buildings in the city.

  4. Err no.

The Earth isn't transparent. You need the Satellite ahead of the terminator, so it can catch the sun while still having line of sight to Chengdu, then there is second set of constraints between satellite size and height while providing light bright enough to replace street lights.

Just for reference The Russian stunt to do this produced a spot of illumination that moved at 5km/sec

  5. Just how did this make it from story idea someplace in Chengdu to the pages of the Gaurdian or was that the Onion and finally to Slashdot without anyone asking just how the hell it's supposed to work ?

Just what orbit are they going to put it in where it can cast a 10-80 km diameter circle of illumination and be able to illuminate the city for a significant fraction of the night ?

  12. It's not that easy in Europe. They have quite stringent regulations for vehicles and while bicycles are bicycles (and basically 100% unregulated for historical reasons), scooters are just as rare as Segways because they're treated basically as powered toys that are not allowed on public streets. No way. Trying the same as in SF would just get you a into big and expensive trouble in Europe. You may see single people driving around with them as long as nobody cares, but dump a shitload of them onto the streets and try to make money with them and you'll be very surprised what happens to you there.

Surprised ?? Not really. Europe is well known for countries having a model where all permissions are denied unless explicitly granted.

If so I have to agree but I really didn't want to go there because. It just raises minutiae about terminology. While we would call them alien, and they would call them angels or heavenly visitors we are both talking about intelligences not of the earth, and the recurring desire to explore and find the new.

  15. People have been searching for evidence of other intelligent life in the universe pretty much as long as anyone has been able to conceive of the concept. There will undoubtedly be people looking as long as we haven't found any or ruled out their existence.

If you actually care, you can do it yourself.
