Because we're being space efficient. Think of all the extra space, both on disks, and on paper, that one extra character in so many words takes. The English language has far too many letters which are just there-and serve no purpose. Elimination of any one (such as the U when unnecessary, as in this case) is a good thing. Seriously though, it's because we're lazy.

It _IS_ meaningful though. I'm going to assume the copy the plantiff had was an OEM copy, so Microsoft didn't even make $200 off it-closer to $20 prob to begin with. By the time all of Microsoft's costs were added up, I'm sure it was at least $2000. In other words, if one out of every 100 people that have Windows forced upon them do this, Microsoft breaks even. If enough people do this, it will stop us from have Windows forced upon us by computer OEM's.

Not only is the entire GCCIS building covered with WiFi, but a significant portion of the rest of the campus is also. Any kind of common or dining area is covered. It's sorta strange-you get used to having a laptop in your backpack and being able to pull it out and get internet access anywhere, then suddenly when you go home, you can no longer do that. WiFi has been useful many times during class, but I'll admit to having used it to goof off during class too.

  10. Re:Who needs DVI out? on DVD Player With DVI Output · · Score: 1

I'll bet you think VHS looks just as good as a DVD also. Because that output is analog, and DVD is digital, and (almost) any device with a DVI input will be a digital display technology. That output is also NTSC, which means it is interlaced. With DVI, I could output the picture to my DVI enabled projector in 720p, avoiding interlacing artifacts (from film sources) and avoiding a needless D>A>D conversion. Additionally, I spare the video the death that's called NTSC. While DVI outputs don't mean much to Joe Sixpack, espeically today, for projectors, it would be a very good thing.

Show me a cheaper smartcard reader than the ones sold by pirate TV dealers. I'll bet you find that the ones sold by Dish/DTV hacking dealers cost 1/2 the price of a normal computer security smart card reader, and they are more flexible. Even if the programmers are designed for hacking, they still have perfectly legimate uses, and I'd certainly have bought one to save $100 (over the price of a more "white collar unit) if I needed a smart card reader. FYI, I don't even own any DirecTV receivers, so don't think I'm trying to defend myself. I'm saying that even if the cards can be used for hacking DTV, there no more legal than a CDR because it can be used to copy a CD.

I'm just barely past Linux Newbit and had no problem getting Debian to work on my Dell Inspiron 4150. Accelerated video, Wifi, Ethernet, Sound, DVD Playback, etc. The only things that didn't work, were the modem, and possibly the TV out (Never tried it). Same on my Dell Inspiron 4000. And my HP Pavilion N5125. I've never had any major issues getting Linux running on a notebook. Any issue I've had with linux, I've just as much of a problem with Windows at some point. As to why not a Mac, I've got 3 reasons. Price, expandability, and propritary. First off, I hate everything propritary, so that alone hurts the mac's case bigtime with me. I do not like being at one vendor's mercy, which is why I'm switching my desktop to Linux. Second price. You can get a cheap PC from Dell for $250. The cheapest mac you can get from Apple is like $800. I toyed with the idea of a 12.1" ibook (it's the only mac notebook I don't find ugly) but it has no PCMCIA slots, so I have no futher interest in it. Apple takes things like the Airport connectors, which are PCMCIA and makes them slightly propritary, just because they are apple. This is why I am not interested in a mac. Show me a current apple motherboard and CPU bundle for about $200 I can drop in a ATX case and I'll get one to play with, but I'm not dropping $800 on a low end mac when I can build a very respectable PC for the same amount.
