  15. MS has a denial of service attack on accounts? on SCADA Systems a Target for Hackers? · · Score: 1

With Microsoft's "security", you only need a user account name to deny use of a user's system.
3 failed log in attempts lock out the legitimate user, even if the account is presently logged in!

Say, your buddy is working under a certain user name, try that name 3 times with the wrong password and his account will lock, outlook goes nuts.
Outlook then asks for a password because the mail server (Exchange) denies SMTP access, the user tires to reboot to "fix it" and cannot log in till his account is reset. This is only funny till someone uses scripts to lock out about 500+ accounts, the Admin will be busy......

And you never "really" get access.....
    LOL

  16. Proof against evolution? on Putting Anti-Evolution Candidates On the Spot · · Score: 1

The Republican party is a classic example of de-evolution.
Republicans have de-evolved into the NeoCon party.
The first rule of being a NeoCon is to not admit you ARE a NeoCon.
The New "Conservative" (NeoCons) are for more federal oversight of states, larger federal government and spending, and starting wars with any non-Christian country.
Republicans used to be a real conservative party; against big brother watching you, big government spending and against foreign involvement.
With the majority of voters being more conservative than the batshit crazy NeoCon right wing, it is for good reason that no NeoCon admits they are really a NeoCon.
You will never hear Faux News admit the fact they are run by NeoCons, but they will claim any middle of the road (non-batshit) view point is a "left-wing" slant.

  21. In other news: on Hans Reiser Interview from Prison · · Score: 1

Microsoft announces a breakthrough in the development of WinFS.....

    WinFS is the fastest filesystem.

WinFS is an atomic filesystem, which means that your filesystem operations either entirely occur, or they entirely don't, and they don't corrupt due to half occuring. We do this without significant performance losses, because we invented algorithms to do it without copying the data twice.

WinFS uses dancing trees, which obsolete the balanced tree algorithms used in databases (see farther down). This makes WinFS more space efficient than other filesystems because we squish small files together rather than wasting space due to block alignment like they do. It also means that WinFS scales better than any other filesystem. Do you want a million files in a directory, and want to create them fast? No problem.

WinFS is based on plugins, which means that it will attract many outside contributors, and you'll be able to upgrade to their innovations without reformatting your disk. If you like to code, you'll really like plugins....

WinFS is architected for military grade security. You'll find it is easy to audit the code, and that assertions guard the entrance to every function. /You never know; //How far do you want Gates/Balmer to go today?

"Cohen was amazed by the quality of some of the bogus CDs and packaging, saying a good percentage of the Hillsboro discs were being counterfeited by a million-dollar replication machine like the music industry uses."

Um, so how is a person who runs a flea market booth supposed to tell the difference?
This is retaliation on the flea market booth owner for selling second hand CD-ROMs.
I suspect they can claim any CD is fake, especially if the same CD creation machines are used by "pirates" and the RIAA sponsor companies.

  24. Media server? on RAID Vs. JBOD Vs. Standard HDDs · · Score: 1

"I am in the process of planning and buying some hardware to build a media center/media server"

I would suggest a backup/restore solution instead of RAID.
Ghost images of the OS, and daily backup of the media storage to a large external SATA drive.
If you go with RAID, use RAID 10, this requires twice the drives to get the same space; 4 one TB drives will give a 2 TB array.
RAID 10 is faster than any RAID except RAID 0, and RAID 10 is redundant.
If you go with RAID, go hardware RAID.
Always buy spare drives when you buy the originals for the array, as you may not be able to buy replacements later.
