Since when is lets wait a week and see what ATI has to offer before we crown a champion anti-nVidia? Yea, the 6800 is an excellent piece of hardware, but you cant compare it against the 9800 because its two different hardware generations. Be paitent. Wait a week, ATI's X800 will be here soon, and then we'll know who is the best.
Three/four words: Home Star Runner Alerts. Imagine: "You have a new Strongbad Email! Click here to view!"
Actually, that gives me a good idea... an IM client that integrates RSS feeds. Is there one out there now? The client software would check various feeds and notify you when they got updated, and optionally what the new data is... that'd be fuckin sweet... where is my lawyer, I want a software patent! =^)
And now I cant get the sound of homestar saying "You have a new Strongbad Email! Click here to view!" out of my head. Thanks...
Wal-Mart wouldnt have a choice. The record companies that license the content would tell them they have to charge X or they wont license the content to them. Dont like it/legal has a problem with it? Fine, the record companies will just double their licensing fees, and Wal-Mart can either shut down their online store, deal with it and raise prices, or take the music industry to court.
An broadcast quality 1080i stream is 19.8Mbit/s. If you figure the max you can get out of 100Mbit/s ethernet is 85%-90% , and you want more than 4 streams (yea, sounds outlandish now, but in 5 years it might not seem so weird). Plus standard network traffic (if you dont make seperate networks) and you're looking at gigabit ethernet.
would be to have every employer send (electronically) your W-2 to the IRS. Then they can compare what you say you make vs what you actually made. I dont know where the majority of tax cheats are made (lying about income, or lying about deductions), but this could cut off one avenue...
BTW the LA/LV route got another $1M in research funding again this year.
And I can see it happening in 10 years if I-15 keeps getting congested Fridays/Sundays as people in LA visit LV. You can only build so many lanes for such a small peak time (2 or 3 of the 7). A rail system would lower the barrier to transit, more people to vegas, and it would be more evenly distributed over time.
Of course, many Angelinos have just decided to skip the traffic and move to vegas. People from LA make up roughly 1/2 the number of people who move to vegas every month (7000 ppl/mo). And the prices of homes have doubled subsequently. Go back to LA!

I run my own correctly configured personal mail server, and paying $2000 a year for a.mail address is a ripoff for the three or four email addresses I've made myself (a firstname@lastname.net address and other various spam oriented addresses). I first thought it would be a good idea, but the $2000 makes it unreasonable for all but medium to large businesses. I definately dont see small companies of 10 people paying that much for a mail domain.
Digital broadcasts take less bandwidth than their analog counterpart, BUT the FCC is still giving the stations the same amount of bandwidth, its just now the station can broadcast more than one channel. This is where subchannels come in to play. Your local NBC affilliate can broadcast NBC in 480p, a 3 or 4 other channels in 480p too on that same 6MHz chunk of bandwidth. So they can turn around and lease those to other content providers (shopping channels, USDTV, etc).
However, you can stil broadcast only about 1 HD channel per 6MHz channel over the air (maybe 1 HD and 1 SD if you bring the bitrate down for the HD channel).
Thats his rule. Last I checked, he (the article author) isnt the be-all and end-all of definitions. His opnion is a good one, but its not the only good one...
Does that mean every comet/asteroid that orbits the sun is technically a planet? If you throw out the size requirement, what other criteria remain for designating something a planet?
I suppose it can be good and bad. One of the good things would be cutting development costs, and maybe lower prices. But with the high piracy rates of Asia/Eastern Europe, I'm not sure I'd trust anyone with a large chunk of the code. And I'd say its a lot less likely than it happening here merely because of the legal reprocussions. Going half way around the world to a different legal system to try and apprehend and punish the guy/gal who did it is far more difficult, when compared to staying in your own backyard (USA/Canada) where you know the law.
Doesnt say if this is capable of GPS-2 or whatever its called. As someone who uses GPS to manage infrastructure, I'd like to see some more precise GPS without having to spend $20,000 on Trimble or Leica equipment.
IMPORTANT NOTE : The enclosed HDTV receiver will not receive ANY channels without a USDTV service agreement. Credit card required for monthly service fees.
Also, people are free to buy TVs with integrated tuners, like this Mitsubishi TV. They just happen to be a lot more expensive than the same TV without the tuner. I saw the benefit of the integrated tuner (and the firewire ports) and I got one.
1. Yes, the signals are encrypted, and they use a Conditional Access Module in order for you to descramble the content. The scheme works in a similar way as satellite.
2. Yes its on the "public airwaves", just encrypted. The FCC says no encrypting primary network feeds (either SD or HD), but they can do whatever with the extra space they have.
3. Its using the extra space in the digital channel. The 8VSB modulation scheme will allow for 19.4Mbit/s per channel. 1080i HD takes up about that much, 720p uses 14Mb/s or so, 480i/p take up about 3Mb/s. So if I own a digital channel and only transmit in 480i/p then I've got lots of extra bandwidth, and I can sell it to someone else.
4. A *very* important thing to note is that the receiver will output ANYTHING unless you fork over the $20/mo. If you pay the $99 or whatever to buy the receiver and decide you dont like it, you're out the money. You cant use it as a HDTV OTA receiver (to receive channels that are in the air and not encrypted). You must pay USDTV money to keep the box from becoming a really expensive doorstop. Likewise, if USDTV goes out of business, you will probably have a really expensive doorstop.

Hiring those of your own blood (or close, in this case) is only bad news. Its one thing if someone doesnt perform and you fire them, they just go away. People who you know and love dont go away.
Except that no one pays me. Friends, friend's parents, parent's friends/work associates, etc. I go and spend 3 hours telling them how to hook up their digital camcorder to their PC (or explaining why they cant even though "its digital"). Installing Ad-aware and cleaning up their PC, telling them not to click on "Yes" on anything that comes up, and other crap. I havent been paid for any of that in the past year, and I've prolly done about 30 hrs of work.... damn why do I have to be so nice.
but feeding the stream being sent. I guess if I wrote a program to transmit 010101... and my processor could keep up, then there isnt really a limit..
