Christianity might be essentially true. If so, eternal life after death might be possible for her and you. If you've never given it serious thought, this might be a good time.
The means and methods will continue to be MBA group-think while the upper crufties will look down there noses at those who don't wear a suit and have short uniform hair.
Yes, but they'll actually be looking down from 10,000 feet in their company-owned Gulfstream jets.
You might think those people are incompetent, self-important douches, but by some measures they're doing something right.
I'm not sad because these particular guys died. I'm sad because my first thought when I heard that some former lawmakers and corporate executives died is, "Good, probably served them right."
I guess this says a lot about me, but I'm afraid it says even more about the overall state of our country.
Lately the talking heads have made a lot of news about growing discontent with the U.S. federal government. To some extent I've written that off as muck-raking by Fox, CNN, Republicans, etc.
But I've got to say, it really does seem like the government is failing at very basic issues regarding law enforcement, especially with letting white-collar criminals get away with pretty much anything.
Are things actually getting worse in that regard, or has the problem existed to this same degree for many decades now?
Same situation for us, although it turns out some of my kids were temporarily gluten intolerant during a certain phase of development.
We found that once you work out a GF menu, it's not really too bad. The main starch becomes rice rather than wheat, and for things like soy sauce people have generally worked out lists of GF brands that you can buy. Overall our menu mostly became more like an east Asian menu, which wasn't the end of the world.
The tough part is when you want one foot in both worlds. For example, there's GF pasta, which I always found gross but my wife liked okay. Or if you want to simulate foods that really require wheat (i.e., cookies), the recipes and ingredients you end up using rarely make something as tasty as their glutenous equivalents. And of course it stinks having to bring special foods for your kid to birthday parties, etc., although that seems to be common enough these days due to food allergies so as not to make you or your kids stand out too much.
that could make solar power production more than twice as efficient as existing methods and potentially cheap enough to compete with oil.
Do you mean compete with oil's fair-market price, or the price after all the subsidies that the U.S. government supplies for oil production, including the military cost?

The fact is that our policies are being set by a bunch of arrogant elitists who think that if they cram down enough education, they can make a clean, office-dwelling, never-get-your-hands-dirty, middle class hipster society and outsource all of the menial labor, manufacturing and other jobs that people of average and below average intelligence used to do.
Aaaggghh!!! We'll be stuck in an Apple advertisement!
I'm really frustrated with settlements. They seem to circumvent several basic principles of justice:
One should be considered innocent until proven guilty. If the SEC can't get a conviction, a judge should not allow a settlement. It sounds like a shakedown, not justice.
They let the wealthy buy their way out of criminal convictions, whereas the poor cannot.
They permit a corporation's finances prevent its workers from facing criminal responsibility for their actions.
I've heard arguments for settlements such as, "We're not sure we could get a conviction. This lets us get at least a modicum of justice" Well if you're not sure, then maybe you shouldn't be trying to prosecute? It's for a jury to decide what's a just punishment, not the prosecutor.
Or, "It lets us safe the legal expense of prosecuting." Well, if the system is so broken that cases can't be fought within the financial means of the government, then shouldn't it dawn on someone that it's way broken for individual citizens with limited financial resources?
America was founded with some beautiful ideals, but I don't have a lot of respect for those who have evolved its legal practices.
GP simply lacks the capacity to look at a situation from different perspectives while believing that his own perspective is morally superiour to everyone else's. A trait shared by religious zealots and fanatics, self-indignant extreme-right politicians, etc... ironically, the kind of people you and I would never describe as moral or ethical;)
It sounds like you consider your own perspective so morally superior to those of "religious zealots" and extreme-right politicians that you can't look at a situation from their persepctive. Interesting.
I find the fact that so many people apparently do (including marking me as a troll, above), to be in astonishingly poor taste with respect to the feelings of the people who could have potentially been killed.
I don't think we have much control over what we find amusing. Is your concern that we're publicly making merry of this situation, and in doing so we seem to be either (a) condoning what happened, or (b) doing something that might effectivly rub salt in the psychological wounds of the bank teller?
Or are you saying that it's in poor taste that we even find this situation funny in the first place? Because I can understand applying "poor taste" to how we act, but not to what our original emotional response (amusement) is to this story. Perhaps instead of saying our feelings are in poor taste, you should say you're "disappointed" or "dismayed" that so many people had a feeling of amusement about the story?

Why on earth would someone want to balance good and evil?
His wife didn't grok his request for a golden shower.
Hey, we didn't start the fire.

My Playstation 3 came with a copy of the first BlueRay video I'd seen at the time: the latest Spider Man movie.
It's like Sony was trying to turn people off to BlueRay.
That this guy's lawyer is given exactly 5 second before a judge before either (a) being dismissed, or (b) being fined for abuse of process.
I hope.

So if a business can maximize your investment profit by investing in slave trading, then it's perfectly proper for the business to do so?

It's reasonable to consider the total cost of ownership (including fuel) of a (for example) Prius vs. a Camry.
But the dollar-cost is only relevant to the environmental issues, insofar as it affects uptake of hybrid vehicles.
A more important issue for us, long term, is how much polution is produced for the creation an use of (for example) a Prius vs. a Camry.
So what's the risk of gene transfer giving us "Roundup Ready" kudzu, poison ivy, etc. in the near future?

Good call. He should have gone with the better known, "AT Machines".
Better than releasing the Gnome equivalent of KDE4.

Typo.

How about the fact that we managed to have a real discussion on /. ? That's no small miracle.
Beautiful. Wish I could mod you up.
