After bouncing around the tech world several decades ago I settled into the affordable/employable community college path. After looking into my options and expenses transferring to a 4yr BS in CS was the right option for me. My local, affordable, community college was the springboard. I am grateful.
If you live in a region where snow and ice are an infrequent occurrence eventually a day like this will come. It's happened in other communities and while folks should be angry it will happen again. Perhaps not in Atlanta again but somewhere.
Seems like an easy call from my chair but I am not, possibly, disenfranchised, poor, abused, indifferent, whatever. For many the return on investment (hey Wall Street) is too good to pass on. Just sayin...
As a US citizen Mr. Gates is free to speak his mind as dictated by the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. He can also now expect to come under "friendly fire" as the political wheels churn but he knew that before writing the book. I see this is a useful debate as candidates are vetted for the coming elections. He may have his biases but as an longtime insider I'd like to hear what he has to say.
If the NSA/FBI/CIA/... was really interested in doing some good with all of the data mining they could solve or at least contribute to resolving cases like this. Prevention would even be better.
I see opportunity here. Once this beast is _somewhat_ operational it will need to be fed and cared for. That responsibility, like most US government functions, will fall to US citizens. If a security clearance is required even better. Lemons from lemonade I say.
Of course humans affect the environment, how is that disputable? It's the degree and duration of the affect that is not clear. Whether, or is it weather, these human changes are a significant factor is the debate..
Considering a career in politics? Language parsing and nuance abound reaching stellar heights with politicians led by super stars like Bill Clinton with his explanation of the meaning of "is" wrt to his intern. Clapper did not misspeak, he lied.
The math requirement should be a part of a CS degree. When I graduated back in the 80's math through differential equations and linear algebra was a given, then you could take math electives or CS based math courses such as Algorithm Analysis. Programming courses were 1-2 hours per semester and really not the meat of the program.
Cry me a river. Regardless of how much lip service is given to the current fiscal pain the gov is shouldering there is always a revenue source for pet projects and nothing returned to their source of funds (us taxpayers).
C64 for me too but I used mine to telecommute to the local university for my CS degree, which included some programming coursework. Nothing like a 1200 baud modem and software 80 character screen emulator connected to a PDP 11-70 BSD system as a C teaching testbed. Loved it.
The Italian Institute of Technology has "developed a robot whose purpose in life is to help a person build an IKEA table." and effectively traversing Dante's 9 circles of hell. Bravo!
What do all of these network/data breaches say about the overall state of security of connected systems? Regardless of who is behind them, all can't be blamed on mismanagement.
Businesses don't want to miss the next big thing but like most decisions, time will tell.

Are you sure they "keep stretching the parameters and scope" or are we just learning the scope and depth of what they have already been doing?
