To feel better about spending a lot more money for school in order to end up right on par with tech school grads. They're a lot like the guys who work under me who freak out when they find out I'm 25 and dropped out of high school.

  3. Great game but.. on Review: World of Warcraft · · Score: -1, Interesting

It's a truly beautiful game which improves on nearly every aspect of the standard EQish MMO but doesn't break much new ground.

Also, there are a few lingering problems in the mix...

-The "queue" system which restricts players from logging into their world (server) until a sufficient number of players have logged out is a ridiculous pain in the ass. I would think that the game would have been designed with scalability in mind to dynamically tackle these loads.

    -The servers are restarted everyday.

-Several lag and high latency can be a problem on even least popular servers.

-Population balance, at a glance there appear to be roughly 3-5x more Alliance (Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes) than Horde (Tauren, Orcs, Undead, Trolls) on any given server. This could be an issue as PVP becomes a larger factor in the later game.

  4. Me too. How can GuildWars do it? on World of Warcraft Launches · · Score: 0

All of the excuses for these subcription fees fly out the window when I consider that GuildWars, which is sure to encounter similiar server and upkeep costs promises that there will be no monthly fee. Given the predicted success of GW (400,000) players during it's recent 2-day beta and the viability of Blizzard's own Battle.net... Why should I believe that $15 being charged is anything but pure profit?

  9. Re:If it can be used to truly identify the idiots. on Insurance Companies Try Out Auto Black Boxes · · Score: 1

What makes a good or bad driver is pretty subjective. Obviously, the insurance company places a lot of importance on speed, I don't.

There hasn't been a single day since I started driving that I haven't broken the speed limit by 15-25mph, sometimes doubling it and I weave through traffic often. I've never had an accident.

On the other hand, a good friend of mine adheres to speed limits strictly, rarely changes lanes and brakes soft and smoothly. He considers my driving style to be "crazy". He has had 5 accidents in the past 4 years, 3 of which were major collisions.

I chalk this up to the difference in our ability to "drive", a combination of comfort behind the wheel, attention to the road in all directions, elimination of distractions and an understanding of the limitations of your vehicle.

My car doesn't have cupholders. If you call me when I'm driving, feel free to leave a message. You'll never catch me making a turn or changing lanes without a signal. I feel that driving a stick gives me a feel for the road that is impossible with a slushbox.

I'd hate to end up paying for the accident that ensues when Jenny makes a blind lane change while searching for her Hilary Duff CD because the black box indictates that I was doing 60 in a 55.

  10. Isn't this fairly obvious... on Is Open Source An Advantage For Game Developers? · · Score: 1

Open Source development is far better suited to cloning existing games (Bubble Bobble, Civilization) than creating an original title.

Without a strict and painfully detailed design document, any original open source gaming project will end up as more of a patchwork quilt than a tapestry.

    You're kidding right?

I grew up on food stamps, raised by my single mother who has and very likely will never earn more than $10/hr. Things got really rough after she left my drug-addicted, abusive, manipulating father to bring us up alone. Memorable things she bought...

-A snickers bar which we stuck a candle in a cut into 4 pieces for my 12th birthday.
-Dry rice, beans and ramen which I ate almost exclusively until I was old enough to work.
-The washington post for the bathroom because she didn't have any cash left for toliet paper.

Also, dog food is a pretty good deal. Lots of food for a low price.

Yes, there are poor people out there getting over but in my own personal experience they were a small minority. Also, the higher prices and different stock of a convienence store is sure to attract a different set than say a grocery store where "real" food is sold.
