makes sense... NOT! Incase you haven't noticed, AIDs is one of the most medically researched topics. The free Market is the only way. If it was supported by public research, that would mean MORE taxes as well as Political influence. Who wants politics to decide whether or not you'll get research done for your particular ailment?
it's 1:00AM. Slashdot paints the word Porn over and over on its front page. . . Just what kind of a responce where they looking for again? Something tells me that it wasn't intellectual conversation.
Searching for sexual innuendos? Don't bother, the article is funny in and of itself -_-
Slashdot should get a Patent on spelling errors (who am I to talk ^^) . Just noticed that Slashdot calls it Acadia where as it is actually called Acacia. Hurry, editors! HURRY!
Learnt english mine I did from fansub anime! NO! not really!
I'm pretty sure that Bush will be the runner for the republicans come 2004, but that may change depending on how this war goes. However, If Forbes (or anyone else) where to run and have Patent Office reform as an issue, I would definitely listen. I think that it is time for the Gov't to get back in touch with the people. (now, to get back on topic)
Your right, a LOT of slashdot articles are all about excessive patent frenzies, but it really is an important issue. Myabe some of you out there are saying, "Heh, it's just a bunch of dirty porn sites..." (some of you are going, "OH NO! This might mean the end of my favorite site!!!") and this ignorance about the world around us is very worrisome. One of the things I love about slashdot is that much of the communtiy knows of the problems we face today and wish to seek action. Especially in this case. So many sites run streaming video these days, and I would personally loathe Acadia for any damage it does to the already struggling internet economy.
People just want to make money, and that is good. People want to make money at the expense of everyone else, that is bad.
more case of Patents gone crazy. The patent office was designed to protect ones ideas and STIMULATE growth, not to allow people to suddenly restrict the use of a VERY commonpractice. I can't say that I'm too pleased with their lawsuit, but I do appreciate the nuances. If I created something, I'd sure as hell want to keep it protected and to earn royalties. Yet at the same time, this is abusing the system. They have a patent on something. That something becomes common practice. That patent becomes lucrative. Company suddenly goes after people using common practice. And they go really low, because they beleive that the porn industry, made of lots o lil fishes, won't be able to defend themselves. After all, the court will just frown down on these "dispicable" people (hey, everyone needs to make a living).
I am all for patents, and for protecting your ideas. but I am also for the expansion of ideas and the advancement of us all. So poo-on-you Acadia!
I Love the "people who wear clothes also bought Clean Underwear" link. It's a little laugh at the end of your search. Kinda like saving the cookie dough until after you have finished the rest of your ice cream... mmmm... ice cream.....
uhhh.. better get back on topic... Stuupid MS, Foos think they can mess with l33t g00gle skillz?!
they got rid of the pop up adds a while back, google did. And I never even knew about them till way after wards, I use moz. So very nice. Anywayz, no popups on google for long time. They even apologized for them. MSN on the other hand is just a collage of ads.
Actually, they really DO need to offer a better product. Other than to check your junkmail once a week, why do you go to hotmail or MSN or any of their other sites. Integrate it into Winders Longhorn (or XP2, whatever)? People will still turn to google first. Google is know, google is trusted, google is reliable, and google is fast.
To beat google, you'll need something nice. REALLY nice..... I mean REEEEEAAALLLLYYY NICE. Maybe if they gave me a couple hundred dollars for time lost using their worthless search, I'd start to use it. 0_o
because when i installed winxp, sp1 was already out. So I never knew about the slow down. Seeing as how I do a lot of multimedia junk (3d modeling, video post production), I would appreciate the boost that was lost in SP1 due to the memory allocation bug.
well, if zomealarm is your bag? ^^ That was kinda a joke, kinda not. After all, the personal firewall edition is very limited (I haven't found a way to block off individual ports, though it may be possible). The Pro edition (or whatever they call it) should adequetly handle it, but I'm sure there are better choices that are OS. Can anyone recommend a good OSS firewall that works under WindersXP?
Moving on: I really don't see what the big deal is, so what if MS doesn't patch NT? The only people using NT are businesses that are reluctant or unable to upgrade. And since a firewall is a must for any business that has a link to the outside world (or even on a closed network for that matter, after all, if the workstations hooked up to the network, it's no longer secure). That being said, any good admin can patch this bugs with their trusty firewall and a few clicks.
Anyway, I'm really looking for a good OSS firewall. So any recommendations would be nice. Thanx!
well, I agree and disagree with your comments about art. What the poster was complaining about was the decline in classical arts. And that is fairly true. However, I also feel that anything that takes a hight level of finess, dedication, and skill to form something that portrays immotions is ART by definition. Therefore, a great debate can be art, as can a skillful fist fight (and they are far more entertaining, too). So, classic art is in decay, argueing is on the rise, but all those artists are just amatuers *_*
Oh, and tell your wife to just use a fork, so much easier ^^ (that's why asians are so skinny, can't get the food to their mouths X_x )
maybe it wasn't the best example for you. you seem to like artsy films better, i guess (would princess mononoke have been a better choice?^^). But I had my reasons for choosing VHD : 1) I enjoyed it, so nuts to what you think; 2) it has violence, action, and vampires - what more could the american people want; 3) I found the dubbing to be fairly competent; 4) I can't stand artsy films. Boring! ^^
everyone's entiled to their own opinion. Even trolls. Although I could equally say that your music sux. However, just because I don't appreciate it, doesn't mean it actually sux. And yes, I actually did listen to some of your music (and i did think it sucked).
moral of the story. If you don't like it, don't pay it any attention.
But the sad truth is that animes remain an underappreciated art form and never have the chance to make it to American theators. Movies such as Vampire Hunter D could have made excellent releases, but they never got the funding behind them. Sufficent to say, it's not wonder animes fail in the states. Unless they make money, they don't get support from the big players. And unless they get support from the big players, they don't make money.
Oh well, looks like it's back to scouring ebay for some anime DVDs.
SEE! Underappreciated, just like he sed. Of course, I wouldn't expect you, the simple minded audience member to realize the secret Genius of the film. The fact that you hated it only proves that it was made by a true movie god and that you are just a simple-minded fool!
NOTE: the above was meant to be humorous, not a personal attack on benzapp. Of course, this will soon be modded as troll anyway. Oh, well.
To the Parent Post: Yeah, but Total Recall was written by Peirce Anthony, one of my favorite Fantasy/SciFi authors. So Paul Verhoeven has little to do with the political messages in that one.
To the Grandparent Post: Wait, since when was robocop underapreciated. I mean, some people really like it, and the rest realized it was a horrible action flick. In order to be under-appreciated, it must first deserve appreciate and then not recieve it. Robocop was appreciated just fine, and doesn't deserve any more appreciation than it got.
dl the pref bar and use the kill flash button whenever a flash bugs you. You can also tell the prefbar not to allow your webbrowser to dl javascripts or images, as well as you it to fool webpages into thinking you're actuall using IE (isntead of moz). VERY useful tool.
I read a similar article in PcMagazine a while back. The technologies work in two ways. One takes popular websites and stores it in their own servers for supposably faster retreival. Sometimes you get faster results because of it, but only if their servers happen to be faster and the sites you visit are commonly visited (amazon.com, etc.). However, it usually isn't worth the $10-20 a month they service costs. The next option is to go with the compressing technique, which basically compresses graphics. A trip to the smithsonian (http://www.si.edu/) results in grayscale photos, but faster load times. Still, it relies on the speed of the servers, costs $10-20, and the benefits really aren't that great. In the end, I pay $40 for my broadband (since I also buy my cable tv from Comcast). I used to pay $20 for a second phone line and $20 for my ISP. To add another $10-20 would make a 56k dial-up connection cost $50-60 , or about the price of broadband for most people. Seeing as how broadband is FAR superior to speed-up services, and the total costs are the same, I proclaim these technologies to be HOGWASH, pure and simple.

you're right, magnets would be easy/more cost effecient. however, Cameras and robot arms are sooo much cooler.... 0_O
okay, the real question is why do this at all?

depends where you live. It's still that accursed day for me.

or i could dl the hotfix. whichever works best.
uhhhhh..... what are you talking about. My hexed version of XP handles SP1 just fine, though now I am thinking about reinstalling winders without SP1.
Damnit! And I just bought a DVD-burner! Now I'm stuck with lame "red-laser". ... . I am no longer l33t .....
WAIT, I'll just make sure that I'm the first one in line for GREEN LASER, w00t! Who's with me?!

you're right, little brain slip. thanx for pointing out my error.
lol.....
that be even funnier if it weren't true.
not that art is totally unappreciated, but sadly, art is a dieing(sp?) art.
^^, sorry, you're right. I used to read a lot of Piers Anthony's works and had a mental slip. Boy, is my face red ^^. Thanx for pointing it out.
oh, well. If the slashdot editors can make mistakes, than surely I can too
