I would have to imagine that microsoft benefits in mindshare and monetarily by having IE as your default browser. Being that millions of users are still unaware that you can change your homepage (or just dont care to) MS gets to advertise their sites and services by default to many windows users. Also the search function (and the fact that if you incorrectly type and address you are presented with a 'search') links directly to the MS portal and advertisers on their engine. Now I admit that it is not much, but to by default have a user in your sphere can be directly profitable or at elast usefull in a number of ways.
because i know that help 'sploits and ical performance are way back on my list - and being 'the typical' mac user i dont care about these things - but stickie updates... ohhhh yeah
One night after at a bar I randomly ran into this guy that some of my friends and I had met earlier at a basketball game. After the bar closed we proceeded back to his house to continue the party - it was at this point I noticed a computer and sat down to mess with it. Seeing this our host starts with a laundry list of problems his windows box was having. I told him that I would love to help but that i was a bit too drunk.
And then he brought out the coke...
As everyone else coninued drinking/screaming/watching porn in the background this guy would hold up a mirror in front of my face every few minutes when I was hyped/frustrated/too high/not high enough until I had finished. All said I was probably paid about $100 for three or four hours of work. Sadly not the first or the last time I have accepted substance for service;)
In the words of Rick James: "Cocaine is a helluva drug"
Large - no pillow big enough for me Armored - just like my skull Waterproof - except my ears sometimes 15 hour battery - I admit it, I don't get much better battery life without a charge.
I always describe my PDA as "my second brain" - becoming more true everyday..
I agree, it is an odd choice for Apple to start a new game on clicking chess.app without giving you the explicit choice of what to do but that said all you have to do is hit Apple+N at launch and it will give you the option of setting up the game.
I hate to say it but if you couldn't be bothered to figure that out on your own you might want to try checkers;)
After a partial release of the source code. Honestly, I thought that this is all the discussion would be about and instead i found 85 "+5 Funny Matrix Reloaded Windows Rebooted" comments. Howabout the fact that the code windowsXP is based on was leaked to the internet last week. If you thought windows was full of holes two weeks ago that was just the beginning. Microsoft is in the position of never getting a liscencing fee again if their product starts to fail big corporations (many of whom are still running the "older" win2k that was released.
I view this as more of a sign that MS realizes that the source code leak was more of an incredible disaster than they are letting on....Even throwing in some absurd comment about never having a sploit in windows before a patch just to draw your attention away from the real news: "Microsoft admits winXP no longer secure by even their definitions, unscheduled major overhaul coming."
ver 1.5 introduced a drawer to accomidate input of event data and so forth which was originally being 'handled' by a constant pop-up window. while i hated the prior method of having to repeatedly generate this magic do-it-all window i have now gotten better and turned my hatred to the loss of horizontal screen real estate and a new "smushed" view of my calendar. while i am not original enough to solve this problem i point out the similarity because i believe many people without widescreens were in a similar predicament.
that said for a better browsing system the trade off might be worth it. with the intro of widescreen imacs even the consumer line is switching to athe widescreen format and omniweb may be beting on the future....
i wish them luck, omni was the first _great_ browser i used on OSX. maybe they assume there is some more room in the mac browser market now that MS left ; )
Everything still works. I havent seen any killer bugs popping up on macfixit or versiontracker either. Also note that the QT Java update is included - fixed one broken site for me that Panther QT had knocked out.
Oh and a bluetooth update, but my Sony Ericsson already works flawlessly (and still does post-update).
And yes, it does require a restart for all of you running the "Show Off" uptime screen saver.
Just found a stash of them in my school bookstore a year or two after their discontinuation. A godsend. Great for chewing on and an amazing writing instrument. You can even take off the clip and any other exztraneous pieces nonessesntial for writing.
I know the popular thing to do is bash psuedo-sciences, and cold fusion because of its shaky introduction into popular thought quickly falls into this quagmire. But, let the human race dream before summarily dismissing the entire concept. I for one dont believe that all I have to look forward to as i grow older is a greater dependence on big oil, old money, and the like. Many groups (and by that I mean countries, companies, and current presidents) would love to convince us that there is no better way to live than under our present conditions. Not giving cold fusion and other radical departures from our current system an honest chance is not far from why were are stuck with Windows as the dominant platform in computers and oil as the backbone of our way of life. Im not saying that cold fusion itself is the future, but what we are presently using is certainly not the platform for all future generations. Hell, if Bush gets his way there might not even be enough sun left for solar energy so there has to be soemthing to fill the void.
Signing up for classes at uncc.edu my browser (Safari) was halted by a message saying that browserX was not accpeted and that I should try again with IE 5 for mac or Netscape 4.7. being that this is a brand new (as of this summer) site I felt it was early enough that my cries might be heard. So i dropped a letter catching the computing staff up on Apple browsers.
1st point - IE for mac is dead. dont tell me my only choice is to use a dead browser 2nd point - Netscape for mac is dead. dont tell me my only other choice is a dead browser.
After clearing this up I mentioned that Safari is now the default browser for Apple computers, that it works flawlessly with both my banks, and that if you want to include netscape in the list stick with Mozilla. If any browser besides Safari survives on the Apple platform it will be Mozilla based (sorry OmniWeb, I pray the switch to WebKit keeps you guys going).
And ill be damned they actually wrote me back, asked a few questions, and updated the site.

With everyone crying about Apple ripping off Watson, pushing out Adobe Premeire, and basicaly running over a number of smaller developers, its easy to forget what they have been giving back in recent months. Lost in hardware rumors Apple is innovating in the developer scene as much as anywhere. Developing and then giving away Webkit instantly gets a thousand projects off the ground which were previously only musings and ideas (read: netflix manager). The best of open source is when it facilitates truly independent innovative ideas that would be shot down by 'the corporate machine' and never see the light of day (read: SubEthaEdit). Dont forget Apple saw this long ago with Hypercard and have been listening to users wail about its death. Not just of the product but of the idea and philosophy of "I own an Apple, therefore I innovate."
Xcode, Applescript Studio, WebKit, Services, Java, Cocoa..... It looks like taking 5 years to plan a new OS from scratch is _finally_ paying off.
Fave Book: "The only book ive ever had read to me was the bible."
Fave Music: "Anything by Francis Scott Key."
Couple this with entries for "The Dude" from big lebowski, the aforementioned "War" and you have further insight into what these peoples interests are like. I know my sister made George W. her friend after reading the disparaging profile. I think the creator should limit deleting accounts to profane ("A Big Penis") accounts and is really selling himself short. The entropy of interacting people is bound to create unexpected results, however they are not always "bad."
Youre going to be waiting quite some time. There is absolutely no room for another browser on the mac platform. I wish there was room for OmniWeb and I hope it suceeds - but Opera? Sorry but 1. its an ugly port and 2. they burned any credibility they had in the mac community when they bashed Apple for not licensing their HTML Engine. And btw, mouse gestures can be added to any cocoa app (which OmniWeb is) just do a search for gestures on Versiontracker and im sure you will find it.
I knew there was a reason i didnt want to graduate this century. aside from the obvious perks of being a career student Apple education prices just keep me taking electives.
Seriously though, a 12" poweerbook for $1399? I remember my fist mac, Lombard powerbook, being like $3000. Im looking over my expenses tonight and will probably order one tomorrow. I easily got my moneys worth on the lombard because i used it so long. The vlaue I recieve from apple notebooks make that an absolute steal. you can wait for the g5 powerbook, ill start being more productive with my antiquated g4 tomorrow.
Maybe if we went back in time and told C&G that cocoa services would be shit and that the promise of system wide spell checking would still be a pipe dream 3 years later then they would have developed _something_ for the OSX arena. In my eyes the promise of system wide spell checking through built in cocoa services (at that point called YellowBox;) probably had a very big influence on their decision to not update SpellCatcher.
But that promise is eeking its way into existence. Using OmniWeb there would be little squiggles all through this text box with 'right-click corrections' to boot.
Honestly before I saw this article I had not thought about them in years. Aside from the story of SoundJam C&G (which was really OS9) C&G have been absolutely quiet on the OSX front since its release.
OSX killed Extension Manager by way of UNIX, SoundJam by way of buyout, and Spellchecker with built in Cocoa services. All three, but _especially_ extension manager, were near necessities when we were dealing with an extension plauged, mp3 starved, clusterfuck of a system.
So to answer your question: a resounding "yes." OSX killed Cassidy & Greene along with C&G's innability to innovate and capitalize on a system change that they saw coming _years_ in advance (remember Rhapsody? they do).
Their Extension Manager was priceless in my converting to MacOS from Windows, and it is still one of the few applications I have ever paid for.
It seems to me that the 'lickable' version of the Aqua UI was meant as a marketing promo for the new OS. I say that because with every new version (starting with Public Beta --> 10.0) the obtrusive and overly eye candy elements are being steadily removed. Looking at the new finder window theme _almost_ reminds me of Platinum OS9 - clean and simple (aside from the overuse of brushed metal). Not to say that OSX isnt the most beautiful interface ive ever seen or that 10.3 wont continue on that scale, but it does seem that after the initial fanfare the Aqua UI is evolving into what it should have been from 10.0..... Easy on the eyes, unobtrusive, easy to use and absolutely gorgeous to look at.
This seems to me like a primer for "let's secure the internet befroe its too late" with a catchy tag-line used to grab the eyes of every person with an opinion on god or the internet more than any serious NYT worthy piece (and yes, I realize its an op/ed). Yes, it is going over what _every_ geek has already stubled on in some way at some point in the last few years: my computer+internet= opportunity for an infinite warehouse of knowledge always at my fingetips. Whatever question one wants answered is magically pulled with the "im Felling Lucky" button, faster and smarted than that pretentious fyck Jeeves. But whats with the "anti-Americans out to do us harm" slant? In one sentance he says to pay attention to what people think of us and in the next runs back to our bad stereotype of untrusting, shallow, and more willing to change others than ourselves? I read nytimes every day, best American paper I have found, but like anything it is used as an instrument of at the worst straight propoganda and at least ignorance. I think this falls into the FUD middle.
i mean give me a break. talk about self righteous, you dont reply to the post in any way except to bash a single line....
but i guess youre right - apparently you guys are just a bunch of trolls who would rather sit around insulting the site that you are reading than add to the discussion in any way.
looking at the posts, the "apple cheated" story has garnered 1400+ posts. meanwhile the original "apple comes out with new shit" _only_ prompted 1100+ posts. if it was that big of a deal im sure it was time well spent for apple.
I would't jump to fast to say that apple wouldnt prove themselves just based on a/. discussion. The slashdot crowd is the cream of the crop when it comes to nerds and our preferences influence the purchases of not just our homes but spouses, parents, signifigant others and most importantly many of our jobs. The earlier discussion on the tests blew up at 1000+ comments and after a careful read (of both the article _and_ the discussion) even i, a confessed mac zealot, was wondering how true the tests were. having joswiak (i love that name) immediately come out and justify apples claims is as big of a PR move as spending a few undred thousand on advertising while costing less and telling us more.
just my 2c but i dont recall nvida immediately coming out to diprove any claims of cheating and thats why there are numerous nvida jokes in the origianl thread.
Honestly, TV Guide is probably read more these days than the bible. But how on earth the same people that have staked their fortune on people _not_ reading (see: TV) decided to get into selling books in the first place...well its beyond me. I guess that constituted playing both sides of the fence and it makes sense in the fact that they certainly have their fingers on the pulse of the majority of americans.
