  1. Marketing on Apple Releases Multi-Button "Mighty Mouse" · · Score: 1

Much better press than they recieved yesterday implementing Intels DRM scheme.

Kinda coincidental release - dontcha think?

No longer living doesnt mean that we cannot expect a comporable performance. Elvis is dead as well but I saw him perform last week - and let me tell you the guy has not lost a step.

I was never a real muppet fan but these characters always killed me, it was sad to see that the creative team behind this little endeavor didnt make sure that the characters were "done right."

But hey, this was a first, hopefully they will take the constructive criticism and go back to work.

The Lisa review in Byte is even better - I have the original magazine (have not scanned it) but let me fill you in on some choice quotes:

"Although the Lisa design has several very important elements, four stand out: the machines graphic-mouse orientation, the "desktop" and "data-as-concrete-object" metaphors, and the integrated design of the hardware and software."

"The "mouse" pointing device is about the size of a pack of cigarettes and has one button on top."

"...the Lisa is the most important development in computers in the last five years, easily outpacing IBM's introduction of the Personal Computer in August 1981."

Oddly enough I have the IBM PC issue as well. If anyone is interested in taking these (and a few others) off my hands hit me up.

Well the rumor as of a few months ago http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=76 01/ was that Nintendo either licensing the Palm OS or some apps and/or technology.

Personally I think this would be a wonderful move on Nintendo's part. With the competition between NDS and the PSP so close why not take full advantage of the DS's trump card: input! The DS may never be the pr0n machine that Sony has turned out but surely it would be trivial to throw on a few hundred dollars worth of functionality with a cartridge (or even firmware in the next revision).

Honestly, of all the fucked up unfounded speculation to me this just makes plain sense. If you take Nintendo at theor word this is supposedly a machine for adults - so lets see some adult software.

Second, my point stands, apparently this works on non-apple hardware, and if it doesn't yet then it will. (And excuse the regedit reference - everyone pointed out that I was wrong to use that name but knew the direction I was going.

Third, Microsoft doesn't lose money like Apple stands to on pirated Windows because they don't sell hardware.

Fourth the BETA you are refering to, if it is a full 10.4 release, (which if you watched the Developers Conference it appears to be) then like I said it is a hella usefull piece of software.

So to recap I did RTFA and at least I understood it - so watch who you call "dumby."

IBM is making one chip for Microsoft (and also one additional chip for Nintendo). One. For the entire life of Xbox 360/ Revolution they will be making the same chip (2-4 years). Apple is in constant need of many chips, chips with unique requirements, chips that ramp up clock speed over time. Chips that require process changes in manufacturing.

That in addition to Apple already being a smaller run customer (vs. Dell using intel) that it just might be the only way to do it and keep the prices right.

    >You have to wonder if maybe he's hedging his bets.

Apple "hedged the bet" when they picked NeXT - a processor independent platform - to replace the OS 9 legacy.

Sure OS 9 had "Star Trek" and was built for x86 at some point but it was a kludge just like 9 had become on PPC. NeXT gave Apple independence from the legacy software and hardware constraints - when Steve said in the keynote that we have the basis of the mac platform for the next twenty years he may have not been kidding.

We chose intel to make the first round of chips but the news is Apple went x86 meaning that AMD or that next young upstart might be making the chpis for the next generation.

  14. Re:Core Audience on Xbox 2 To Be Unveiled on MTV May 12 · · Score: 1

Aside from 'the Xbox losing money' deal I think you have really hit the point. I was in the discussion the other day of PSP vs. DS and it became clear that Sony was making mistakes that christ almighty either they themselves have made recently or other companies paid forward for them.

Letting the DS ship 6 million units before the PSP went on sale? Not including at least some paltry Memory Stick? Going with Yet Another Bastard Sony Media? Comparing a design flaw to a work of art (wow)?

I find it amusing that these monolithic companies dont seem to learn from their successes or mistakes. The Xbox is an entry into the computer (hardware) business for MS. The largest company in the world went into the deal planning on losing money up front and they did and thats cool. Now whether or not they planned on only selling about 100,000 boxes in japan is up for debate but it was and is clearly aimed at an older audience in America. The older audience 'gets it' as not just a game box but a damn good/cheap media center - and thats why many of us took the next step faster then MS wanted and started modding them.

Where is NextBox going to be targeted? I hate to tell them but they cant compete with Nintendo with younger kids (and the _parents_ who drive them to the store and purchase the system) or compete on any level with the Sony installed user base. That left them the grown ups but spending millions to launch it on MTV is obviously not aiming for that either.

WTF? I guess we will see. Myself, I have a modded xbox (Leet-Gear.com shameless plug) but I have always 'enjoyed' Nintendo games and products the most. When the NextBox becomes moddable I will purchase one, other than that, I am holding oput for a Revolution......

I think the older generation instead of lamenting that most convergence phone/camera/music/pda phones dont do it right should applaud the ones that do. This looks like a great first step.

Most importantly the battery life kicks ass on this phone in both modes - I really think that this is the acid test for many - What good are feautures if there is no power to turn on the phone.

One day soon I will own a Phone / PDA / iPod / Camera (Still and Motion) with hopefully some GPS thrown in for good measure - Convergence is key - that or bigger pockets.

Um, something tells me that 'only adopter' would be a tad more appropriate and that these economies of scale will never kick in no matter how many generic components they use or corners they cut. Look at Apple, $499 is a "Oh hell, i'll give it a try" price. With what the Amiga case doesnt come with you will easily spend a grand on what is basically a _G3_.

I know i would love to play with a Yellowdog Linux media server running on some ultra quiet G4 rig, but the cost of kits are too prohibitive when I know that the same can be done Intel/AMD for a pittance.

I would think that the big four labels signing onto a p2p network of any sort would be huge news, but I guess even in the techie world we just dont care. Between bittorrent, soulseek, kazaa, winMX, aquisition and so forth (oh and Rhapsody / iTunes music store) it seems that the labels are trying to fill a market need that has already been met.

Will they make money? Undoubtedly they will stay profitable but even having RTFA it seems like a last gasp. Hopefully (for them) this will be a lesson learned and that next time the market moves they will take a positive action to fill consumers needs (as opposed to the reactionary negative actions that we have come to expect).

If Apple really does have a new 60gb iPod waiting with photo support (http://thinksecret.com/news/0410photoipod.html) and the like then the ipod killer for christmas will be the iPod itself. With a high end (photo enabled 60gb), mid-range (20/40gb ipods) and 'economy' offering (the mini - which could use a price slash) Apple against all odds and logic can continue to own the mp3 market for at least the holiday season and well into next year. But, as we have seen repeatedly the real trouble Apple tends to have is actually making enough of them.

It will be hard and likely take years to break the stranglehold Apple has on the industry. A great music store built in to a free best-in-class music player/ripper/burner/organizer and coupled with the ipod family of players. The fad hasnt turned on Apple in the slightest and most likely it hasnt even _peaked_.

The /. summary is a bit misleading at first glance, but then it was that confusion that actually got me to RTFA. Sony has been preaching home convergence for so long, I remember years ago first reading in wired the plans for the PLaystation 2 to be your digital hub. Now the Cell is going to invade all of my comonents?

Sony will never again have the pervasive clout to take over your entire living room, not to mention your car, personal player, home office et al. at the same time. I would appreciate a less concerted effort at making everything work together for just a little present day cross functionality. Firewire on all these Sony devices since 199X and still my camcorder cant talk with the ps2, minidisc, or psp?

  25. mmm apple marketing on Apple Launches iTunes Volume Discount Program · · Score: 4, Interesting

In a nutshell Apple is standardizing their marketing incentives for 3rd parties to come and take as they see fit. I would expect a steady stream of revenue coming from this program for a number of years. Just like the creation of iTunes gift certificates and allowances lets parents bot keep tabs on things and give a present at the same time, these volume certificates will allow universities and corporations to do the same.

Apple is doing a pretty good job IMHO on leveraging the music store to both make money and make mindshare. I have seen a number of Apple logos in _strange_ places on campus due to crosspromotions with pepsi and the school.
