Much like you, I put it off forever.
Being touted as the "newbie distro" I tried Mandrake 7. No dice! I couldn't even get online. I continued to make the leap every six months or so only to go back to Windows after a week of pain.

Then last summer, Mandrake 10 came out.

The install was a snap, and it recognized all of my hardware immediately. There were a few headaches sure, but none of them prevented me from using the OS the way I wanted to (ie. browsing, downloading etc.). A year later and I could never go back. The only reason I even boot into Windows anymore is to update the iPod.

That said, I still don't know how to mount any of my USB drives or get my digital camera to work. I think something might be corrupted with my operating system. Anybody have any suggestions?

  4. Xenosaga on In-Game Advertising Breaks Out · · Score: 1

The PS2 game, "Xenosaga" features a PDA-like device on which the protagonist receives email messages.

Every third or fourth email is from Namco advertising one of their other games. These usually include screenshots and press clippings. I can't find any screenshots now, but it is so out of place and blatant I'm sure it is done with a tongue planted firmly in Namco's cheek.

  7. Re:What they should do on eBay Running Trial for Downloadable Music · · Score: 1

RIAA Radar doesn't take into account distribution deals with major record labels. If you want to "stay indie" for example, you need to steer clear of labels like Sub Pop because of their distribution deal through Universal. I have yet to see evidence that distribution deals don't channel money into the RIAA's coffers.

Super Smash Bros. is the most overrated game ever. I've tried to play it with friends over and over and we just can't enjoy it. I honestly think there's more strategy in the Dreamcast's Marvel Vs. Capcom II.

We usually end up going back to Top Spin Tennis or some sports games...

  9. The GBA is not an "adult" system on Nintendo's Boss On Western Partnerships, Online · · Score: 1

everywhere I've been, it's perfectly acceptable for adults to play Game Boy

I'm sorry, but I call bullshit on this.

I'm a 28 year old male who is an avid gamer. I have pretty much every console since the Colecovision and pay close attention to the industry (obviously you do as well, since we're both posting here). I work and live in the financial center of North America's sixth largest city; this is only relevent because I'd like to set the scene.

Since the release of the original GBA (and including the SP) I have yet to see one person beyond their teens playing it in public. Not one. I see hundreds of people every day on the train, streetcar, subway and bus. I see adults in foodcourts, on park benches and waiting for transit services. None of them are playing a GBA.

The simple fact is that it is a child's toy. I will certainly concede that there are a few titles targetted toward adults, but they are few and far between. I've played my SP on a plane, and seen others do the same-but that's pretty much it.

    Here is a perfect example:
I bought a copy of Boktai a few months ago. Boktai is a game which requires that you play it in sunlight. I've put maybe 45 minutes into it, simply because of the stigma attached to adults playing portable video games. I don't believe this is a sign of weak character, rather an indication of the climate surrounding portable gaming. It isn't (and I don't believe it ever will be) ready for "prime-time" adoption by adults.

  10. I hated Advance Wars...will I like any of these? on Best Strategy RPGs Of All Time Rated · · Score: 1

After all the hype surrounding the first two Advance Wars games, I picked up the second one on the GBA. After three or four hours of playing I realized that I couldn't stand it. That style of game just wasn't for me.

Is there a chance I'll like these other ones? La Pucille (sp?) looks interesting, but I don't want to get into another Advance Wars situation. I love RPGs though, and want to give it a chance.

    Any suggestions?

  11. Re:Personally, on The Way the Music Died · · Score: 3, Interesting

What is an Aphex Twin fan like? What kind of clothes should i wear if i like Amon Tobin or Sabres of paradise?

Aphex Twin fans are usually balding skinny white guys. Strangely I've never seen a Sabres of Paradise fan...(rimshot)

The fact is that all music is marketed in some way, and it usually involves an image. Whether or not this image is pushed by the label, the media or the band makes no difference. Take a look at the way bands like Modest Mouse & Mogwai are pushed: Beer-swilling maniacs. Like it or not, that's an image.

Let's use one of your examples...Aphex Twin? People love saying "He's so anti-establishment that he sped up an entire Evan Dando to 1/4 of a second and used it as a snare in one of his own tracks...and handed that in as the official remix"
    That's Aphex Twin's image. He's a "rebel", and chin-strokers love it.

Pavement? Image. Nerdy glasses with an attractive frontman.
Merzbow? Image. NOISE TERRORIST. It's still an image, and it still sells. Hell, look how quickly the 50xCD Merzbox set sold out.
MF Doom Image. White indie-kids like the idea of someone rapping under the persona of a Marvel comics super-villain.
    The Make-Up 'Nuff said.

Image is as important as the music in both major label and independent music. It's still part of the product!

Would people rave about Godspeed if they were all *super* hot and well dressed? No.

  13. Final Fantasy XII on E3 - First Day Shows Multitude Of New Games · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm so glad we've been given a hands-on preview by someone who's actually played the game. I can't wait to play it.

While they don't mention it by name in the article, the battle system seems to work much like the one used in Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. I'm not a fan of real-time RPG battles, but the KOTOR system allows you to pause it at any time and issue new orders (to be executed when the game resumes). It's a great system and really keeps the flow of the game at an even pace. If like me you jump out of your seat when most FF battles begin (screen melting/swirling/shattering accompanied by a loud noise), this is a welcome change!

As far as Phantasy Star Universe goes...please let it be a single player experience...please.

I have so many good memories of playing through the first three games, and I have zero interest in hooking up with some other couch-geeks to play an RPG. It's like Final Fantasy XI; the game looks good, but I want to play these things to take a break from reality and spend some time alone.

Ah well, as long as the single player RPGs are still being made I've got little to complain about.

Artists like Radiohead, Ben Folds(Five), Aimee Mann, Modest Mouse, Warren Zevon, Tori Amos,

Staggeringly enough, the new Mouse debuted (usage?) at number nineteen on the Billboard chart. So at least one of those artists is in the top 40. And I'm sure Radiohead's yearly release of noodlings hits in the top 5 each time.

As a longtime fan of the Mouse, I find it shocking. And great.

  15. What about distribution deals? on 2003 CD Sales Officially Down 7.6 Percent · · Score: 1

Like the parent, I don't buy from RIAA-affiliated labels either. This can be annoying, but for the most part it's easy to maintain. I'm not buying the new Modest Mouse for instance, being that it's on Sony.

BUT I'm really curious about labels that are "distributed" by the majors. Take Sub Pop for instance. I was sure that back in the Nirvana heyday they were owned by DGC, which was in turn owned by Universal. Nowadays sites like RIAA Radar claim that their releases are "safe". But if they're being distributed by a major, is any cash from the sale of say, the last Shins album getting into the pockets of the RIAA?

Nobody seems to know this, can anybody point me to a good source of information on distribution deals and the RIAA?

I also don't trust the magnetbox.com site...it claims that NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine" is safe, but wasn't TVT bought up by Universal?

Bah. At least Matador & Drag City are safe.

I know you can install RPMs, but is that the only format? Where do programs install to? How do you uninstall them?

    Look. At. Me.

I think it was trying to mesmerise her. Anyway, it scared the pants off me and to this day nobody has been able to identify it. Any ideas??
