Ok, Mandrake's site is running really slow, and I still have the window opened, so here's the text of their press statement:
A controversy has erupted today in the Linux community about the upcoming Mandrake Linux 9.2 and advertizing. Although the overall reaction from the community is mostly positive, a few people don't seem to be happy about having advertizing in Mandrake 9.2.
We'd like to explain briefly why we have done this and why you shouldn't worry.
0) There won't be any ad in the screensavers in Mandrake 9.2
There will be one paid-ad in the installation procedure, and a few paid-links in bookmarks.
1) Ads are selected and won't be intrusive.
Our advertizing plan is only offered to MandrakeSoft partners - we select only ads that make sense as complementary Linux solutions. Additionally, ads won't be intrusive (no pop-up windows) and can be removed easily.
2) There have been ads in Mandrake Linux for years.
Maybe you didn't notice it, but in the installation procedure and in browser's bookmarks, there have been many links to Mandrake products, the GNU project, many Open Source projects and so on. In Mandrake 9.1 there was the first "commercial" link to a technical book content provider. Nobody was annoyed, we didn't get any feedback about that.
3) Free Software and business model.
As we are firmly committed to Open Source/Free Software, we want to keep on exploring business models that are compatible with this spirit.
They addressed this already.
It seems kind of slow due to slashdotting.
On a side note, this time the slashdot sensationalism really disapointed me. I've been eagerly checking Mandrake's site for a while now, I've got a computer that's waiting to have 9.2 installed on it. I'm waiting for the free download, then as soon as I'm sure I like it, I'll run out to buy a copy. Does anyone know if Best Buy will carry this one? I saw them with an older version years back.
My web server is an older HP PA-RISC 66 with 128 MB ram... I'm not sure of a date, but it's kinda old. I've got an IBM 286 that still runs DOS like a charm! In high school (y2k) I used it for my QBasic class. Worked great! Here at work we have all sorts of old Vaxen.... Some that use line printers instead of consoles. Fun stuff!
So their waiting until XP is nearly gone and everything else already is. XP Home stops having support on Dec 31, 2006. They stop selling either home or pro on Dec 31, 2005. Isn't that nice, they'll leave lots of options for you to buy! Longhorn, or..... Longhorn... Probably a choice of home or pro. Wow. What fun that'll be!
Do you really need a special company for this?

At my place of work we set up multi-monitor systems all the time. We make 12 monitor "video walls", and every one of our desktop systems have Matrox Millenium g450's with dual heads. It's really not that difficult.
Hey, for those who haven't read all the details of 1.1, I thought I'd point out that this really looks to me like it's far better than MS Office. Not only does it have 99% of the standard functionality that MS gives, at a much much smaller (read: free) pricetag, but it gives some great bonuses! OOo Draw seems like it's got most of Visio's functionality (a $400 app for the pro version, from MS), it also has built in PDF writing capabilities ($450 from Adobe)! Also, as far as I know, the last version (1.0.1) couldn't actually write.ppt (powerpoint) files, it could only view them. 1.1 is supposed to support writing them as well. Overall this looks ultra-damn-sweet!
Yeah, I saw this announcement on newsforge earlier today, and I had to hit myself. Just yesterday I downloaded and installed the winblows version of OOo1.1rc5, and now I've gotta update to the final;). If I had only been slightly more patient!!
This is not the only way to get the games though! It's just a way that will allow the game to perform at it's peak, without legacy OS options using any of your CPU or memory. You can still download and install the game for free, but then you have to worry more about overhead. I think this is a really neat way to get more people interested in Linux, since they're starting to see they can get these kick ass Linux live cd's (Knoppix, Gentoo games, etc.), but they may notice an utter lack of any form of Windows live cd's out there. Seems something cool is happening, and there are too many people around here that whine and drag their feet. This isn't about limitations, it's about expanded possibilities! Be happy!
Umm... folks, I may be wrong, but this comment doesn't look like flamebait to me. I don't think that he's saying that it isn't ready for the desktop... I think he's offering the handwriting and speech recognition as proof that it is... But I could be wrong.
It's running the same Qtopia, the same Java, and the same Opera, it looks like a Zaurus, but with full screen video capabilities, and AMD inside. Is there something I'm missing? Oh, other than the Zaurus having the built in keyboard?
Ok, I read through the article, then tried to go to it again, and apparently it's a different article now. I had notices a glaring mathematical error in the first one, where he said
Thus: the wavelength is.6m x 2 = 0.12m
And when I looked at it again, the whole page layout was changed, and it was changed from.6 to.06. Very odd. Editors that *gasp* edit!?
I have to agree about MUSHclient. It's also supposed to be the fastest client there is for win32. I've used it for years, and I'm quite happy. It's semi-free... unlimited use with the nag screen, but you really should go ahead and pay for it.
While we're talking about MUDs, you all need to check out Adventures Unlimited, the best MUD there is! Tell them Kadagan sent you;)
Why not buy a motorbike you ask? Well, here's why:
Dick's pain and effort won't go without reward. In addition to the obvious glory and inevitable fame associated with riding a scooter, Dick and his two companions will receive a bumper sticker.
The bumper sticker makes Dick's pain all worthwhile =D
That brings up another two interesting questions. Can Segways get flats? And did they need special 'mud-like' tires for these things?
First, I'm not sure if they can get flats. Second, I think you misunderstand about Mt Washington. I've hiked it before and it's quite some climb, but it has an auto road going up it with a gift shop at the top. I'm assuming that they used the road, so didn't need special tires. I just pitty the cars that may have been stuck behind them (it's a small road).
Ok, I don't mean to offend anyone here, but I think that some of us may have our reasons to be against gay marriage. That's just one example... no offense intended.
Err... maybe I missed something... but why's it MATTER what the 'code' in Symbol says? It looks obvious to me that it's still part of the block comment...
Hey, that's a very good point. If I had any mod points, I'd give you +1 Insightful.

bow before the power of the ninja robots!

How about Mithril? Or is that a mix of other metals?
It's currently out of stock, but I'd love to have one of these!!
oops. it appears I'm out of date. I was running 1.0.1, and it didn't save them. Not that I ever create them, but I'm sure that some people do.
I know this was a joke (and a good one at that), but OpenOffice.org is also available for Windows and OS X, and others.

The Zaurus allows you to do that. I use the command line more than the gui on my SL-5500.

Well, if they did that, then she'd just go right back to sharing her rap music with everyone in the world. What good would that serve them? ;-)
Exactly... I was thinking "I'm glad I withdrew some cash from my account, apparently my VISA card won't work anymore!"
