    Actually, I'd worry more about the legality of his Windows 2003 license. There is no proof behind this, but I'd imagine that if it's a home system, it wasn't actually purchased. If you're going to pay that kind of money, plus buy a copy of OS X, why not just buy a Mac? From the article (with emphasis added):

    Test system:

    - AMD Athlon XP 1600+;
    - 512 MB SDRAM;
    - Ati Radeon 9000 with 128 MB DDR-RAM;
    - CMI-8738 based 5.1 soundcard;
    - MSI K7T Turbo2 mainboard;
    - 40 GB harddisk;
    - Standard ps/2 keyboard;
    - Microsoft Trackball Optical (USB);
    - Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (host);
    - PearPC 0.1, emulating Mac OS X 10.3 Panther (client).

    That's why there's so many college kids that have nutritional problems. They decide to become vegetarians because it's "cool" or whatever, but they don't actually do their homework and learn how to do it properly, so they end up with insufficient protein, low iron, etc.

    Silly me, I thought my nutritional problems in college were due to junk food and alcohol. ;)

Why not invest a few dollars in one of these, and call in to make daily entries? Just one of the many possibilities. Another could be to call your answering machine every day and leave a short summary, then listen to the messages when you return. That's probably one of the cheapest sollutions. Have fun!

Here's a link, scroll just shy of half way down the page, and you'll see some photo's of the board. In addition to being silent, you can make some pretty cool custom cases for it ;).

    Ok, I just reinstalled two days ago, for the first time in years and years. Here's what I had to do to make it useable:

    0) Install all my drivers (I ended up adding this to the list after the fact)
    1) Install all service packs and hotfixes
    2) Install McAfee and update it
    3) Download and install Opera and import my old mail
    4) Download and install geOShell to stop using explorer ;)
    5) Download and install gaim
    6) Download and install MUSHclient (gotta mud!)
    7) Download and install winamp
    8) By this time I really needed to put Battlefield: Vietnam on ;)
    9) Ok, I haven't gotten to this step yet since I installed BFV, but I need to install exceed (not-so-free X server), and map all my network drives, then I should be at a completely usable state.

    Is this basically like everyone does?

I agree with the thought, but it brought up another thought in my mind.. For the purpose of discussion, let me ask this: When you see commercials on cable or satellite TV, aren't they using "your power" and "your bandwidth" (your cable or satellite)? They're using "your hardware" (the TV) also. Is this different? You are paying for the cable or satellite service (not sure if it's the same with broadcast tv). I could be way off base here, but it seemed like a good point to bring up ;)

    I think there's a point where you need to ask "who really owns your car?" I thought that I owned my car, since I bought it outright with cash. It seems to me they're saying that the government owns your car now. When they're requiring you to document when you remove your battery, that's going way too far. I had a bad alternator once, and my battery died pretty frequently until I figured it out and replaced it. I did all the work myself, and the only documentation I have is the receipt for the alternator. The only reason I saved that is because it's got a life time warranty ;). The car is mine, and while on my private property I should be able to do whatever I like with it. There is no reason that a law should be passed having this great of an affect on so many people, when it's meant to deter a slim minority.

But the material I download is all stuff that I have legally purchased. Until recently I hadn't found a good quality ripping program that didn't take exceptionally long, and was free, and could make mp3's, so I would download songs of my cd's that I bought at a store. I would then burn those mp3's onto a single disc that my car stereo can play so I could have hundreds of songs on one disc. Would this be considered illegal or unethical?
