I hate to back the pro-war crowd. But the fact is most advancement has been because of war for one simple reason. The people in power (through out history) have only been interested in investing resources in science for the military benefits. Be it metallurgy, the physics of using a catapult, or cruise missiles and hydrogen bombs, defense or offense was the reason for the research.
After all the internet was first funded by US Department of Defense money.
They can write all the $100 Million checks they want.
I think online is the way to go. One it keeps telcom folks employed (good for geeks). It is also way better for the environment. Why should I have to drive to a big box store to buy a disk that was produced in another state and shipped 100's or 1000's of miles to my city? What a waste of energy and recourses. I'd rather have the high paying telcom jobs than the sales drone jobs at Big Box Inc.
However I'm likely to buy my video from Apple or Google before I buy from MS.
Ok maybe this is an tangential question to the subject. But I'm wondering does the ability to post anonymously create more truthful revelation because people are not afraid of retribution? Or does it create more bogus BS because people know they can't be held accountable?
I went back and read all of the related articles for the heck of it. And the thing that strikes me about this is who on slashdot ever believed that the geek squad is made up of "most uber of computer savvy people you've ever seen"?
One of the selling points of object oriented coding was it was supposed to formalize this and make it easier. In theory all objects were to be designed to be generic and reused from day one. In practice it rarely works that way. Especially under tight dead lines and lean development teams.
Basically this is why external usb drives are so nice. Using one you can cheaply and easily back up fairly large internal drives. Back up and REMOVE (reformat with the original install disk) securely any data you don't want to get out before taking a machine in for repairs. Now granted the average Geek Squad customer isn't that tech savvy.
So they should at least practice "safe computing". Viruses are probably why most people are taking the machines in in the first place. That and Vista.
The other thing is that the virus and trojan laden PC is already owned, and those pics of owner and his/her honey are already on a Russian hosted porn site.
In a recent case independent security researcher cocoruder found a critical bug with the JET engine, via the.mdb (Access) file format, he reported it to Microsoft, but Microsoft's response came as a surprise to him
This morning a independent security researcher was suprised that once again the sun rose into the sky this morning. "I was really shocked that the Earth is still spinning, even though it has been for billions of years."
If you are talking about serious security vulnerabilities with-out a reasonable work around, then the customer has a reasonable expectation that you literally work around the clock to fix the issue.
If its a "normal" bug then I think several weeks or months is more the industry standard.
Only when it's Joe Public doing the infringement. When Bob Corporate infringes, Slashdot's bile rises...
While that's a gross generalization of what I perceive to be a double-standard, I can see some kind of justification behind it - Joe Public generally doesn't make money off it, whereas Bob Corporate infringes for profit.
Especially when Bob corporate earlier sued a member of Joe Public for the same actions. "May he who is with out sin cast the first stone."
It won't belong before the RIAA wants the NSA's records for sueing file sharers. And sadly as much help as the FBI gives the RIAA, it might happen without a fight.:-)
I remember that game being addictive. The first time I played it I though I had played for about 90 minutes. Looking at the clock I had blown 6 hours!
[Start Humor] While the game does teach some concepts, it might just kill other educational opportunities. On the plus side there will be no shortage of civil engineers. [End Humor]
Earlier this week at woek an Amazon rep present on the Amazon Web Services (AWS). I didn't expect much, but the presentation at least sounded pretty impressive. So the RH on Amazon compute servers is something I and others should check out.
I don't want any product hardware, software, or DRM media that must phone home for permission to work. Too much a risk that the company will go out of business, or decide maintaining the service is no longer profitable.
If this story is true, I think a class action lawsuit is in order...

When I took anthropology classes in college this was referred to as sexual selection. I suppose it has been sanitized in these more PC days...
Seems like a likely follow up, stupid as it is.
Perhaps I should be a corporate Lawyer. Get paid lots of money to waste time and money....

Perhaps spammers are focusing on how to get a smaller number of messages through the filters rather that upping the number of messages sent.
So where is the goodness in MS? (And I don't mean the charities Bill set up in an attempt to buy his way out really bad karma or damnation.)
I used to think that MS did a good job with TrueType fonts, until someone pointed out they didn't develop TrueType.

The AppleTV already gets pretty high quality video from youtube. I wonder if they are adapting that for the masses.
Find a friend with an appletv or an Apple store and check it out!
I call that the ostrich syndrome. Although even ostriches are not really that stupid.
So your saying his government is made up of morons?
It time for MS to take it for a spin and figure out which ideas they will spend the next 7 years trying to rip off.

Not like the US roll out is it?
I actually think the French will get the best deal. The worst part of the phone for consumers is the exclusive contract with the networks.
Why is the parent modd'ed funny? I think it makes a very good and serious point.

I would love to see a independent report on the percentage of health care money that goes to lawsuits, suit prevention, and liability insurance.
My personal experience seems to corolate with the parents hypothesis. The question is how do we show that?
