maybe because Linus Torvald likes AMD's move and dispite Intel for not making it available for the masses (through price-politics)? besides I haven't got that feeling from the article/comments.
I am beginning to sketch a new interface for X, but I still need to read a couple of books before I am ready for the programming. The idea is to enhance the function that X is known to be the best at: network-transperancy. What I know is not to use QT or GTK. I am more into using SDL, but I would want to leave any if posible.
Your point about Control-C and Control-V has to be taken with care. The users have been using those commands for many years. When I work at an Apple at school I have to change my mind to use Apple-C and V. Most of the time I press Control and that means doublework *sigh* The question is if the open source community should start thinking about hardware design. Picture a group that develops keyboard designs.
I agree totally on blackbox and xfce, but the (desktop) users want a desktop environment, because they are "affraid" of playing in the console (I think it is the MS scaring-campaign: try to click at the Windows folder and then System or Program Files). I for one play a lot around in the console at Mac OS X, but their design is really clean.
Linux really needs change, the Desktop Enviroment are too close to the windows/mac/xerox-interface that were invented more than 20 years ago. I think we need to be inspired about those who creates interfaces in computer games, because some (or many) are very different from a desktop, and many of them are appearently very intuitive.
I am beginning to "block off" information like "my car is bigger and faster than yours", maybe I am getting older *grin*.
Linux is my number one choice to get work done (when I am not wasting my time on slashdot) and occasionally I boot into my winNT to play some games (that I cannot get working in wine)
I wouldn't encourage inexperienced users to compile 3.1.9 (3.2 alpha) because of the early phase of development. I run it myselves (cvs medio February, time to upgrade:)
This article is about a kernel opt. patch that make your system probably more faster than you already have.
I am really exited about this, because I am building an media-player (music, movies, iRadio whatever) and optimations on the desktop is really appreachiated (sorry about the bad english, tried to build Gentoo on a 233MHz computer this weekend, need sleep!)
... Internet is not TV, Internet is not TV.... now, are you happy then?
seriously, turning the Internet into a TV is again a step into the wrong direction. The idea of seeing a friendly face (like the news) is not relly fitting to the idea of the Internet, which is made for every opponion. Anonymity is encourage this, whereas people putting pictures of themselves into the public (without having too) is somehow sending a message. Humans are so superficial, it is a part of our genes.
I am very currious of trying Gentoo. I have been using LFS for a year now, and it is great to learn how to compile a whole system, but it also gets repetitive after a while. If emerge works as Fink on a Mac OS X, then I am going to give it a go for my homebuild mediaplayer:)
I think there are a lot of people who has a blood oath against Sony... Sony just dosn't care, because they KNOW that they are on the right track.
(yes this can be compared with sex)
I agree on that laws are the reason we have freedom today. Without an constitution that protects the individual there would be facism or socialism (pick whatever you like) and freedom wouldn't have much to do.
well, then you argue that standards are also law, thereby protecting freedom. But you are forgetting one thing: a company is not an individual person, but a social center of business. A company is accepted by western constitution because they are helping people getting money, when those give an effort back. The money is a democratic tool for people to have "fairness" in their live.
Standards on the other hand is an opressive tool against individuals and a democratic tool for companies (who wants to protect their effort, so those individuals get their money...)
Standards are on one side a very good thing, because it gives money to people, on the other side it in many cases slows down innovation, because the sharing of information lacks, and you have to backward-engineer to get the same kind of result (like some OSS-projects do).
would you please finish your arguments, because they are getting really BASIC (not the programming-language:)
I for one don't have a problem with the capitalistic system, only when it is used wrong. Here are some points I find to be a problem with the world economy
1. trade with money. How can this help anybody else than yourselves (if you are that lucky). We build the monetary system because people would get democratised by choosing their fate through money earned by working for the society (a company is also a part of the society, maybe evenmore than a public service, because a company is so more dependend on the poltitics made at a parlament)
2. giving food to the poor. In the 80's (and some 90's) we where bombarded with television-shows/ commercials/ news about the hungering people in Africa. Sure it is not a good thing to have hunger, but it didn't come from nowhere. These people have become not depend on their own economy, but the global one. When Europe and the US dumped tons of food in the past to the hungering people, they also dumped the prices in those countries (there always some food-industry in a country eventhough it looks poor and small). Now these companies or farmers had to close down, because they couldn't compete with the low prices of the global companies (free goods from the UN).
3. Money has always been seen as an individual thing, that could help individiual problems. This is the main idea behind money, eventhough we found social solutions (Keynes) in the 1930's to what money could be used for. Instead of saying it is an individual thing, money should be more seen as a democratic solution. Those who work more for the society are rewarded (except if you have stupid tax-systems) and those who are lazy are getting punished (except if you have social care). These are the things that have driven the western world in the "over-geared" society throughout the 20th century and what we still live by. Remember the "old" days of the western world (before 1930) where people lay starving in the streets, rich people where greedy and fashion controlled the society.
Even economists (read: latest nobel-price-winner) has just been pointing out that these old ideas of capitalistic economy (thanks to Adam Smith and behavorism) is not working in our society anymore. People are not greedy, people are not starving and science is the fashion controlling our society. The "poor" countries (they are only poor if you compare them with the western world) they actually needs to get the "old" economy before they can move to our kind of economy. Many seems to forget this, things take time.
for the guy who is the friend of the builder, I think it is news or he would not probably post it here... I haven't heard it on a linux-machine yet, so it is news on that front
(we cannot all be a part of fisherprice-land, sorry, I had to do it:p)
but do they really use Word? it might be installed on all computers everywhere in the industry, but how many people have you seen using it, how many websites has linked their files to Word? I haven't seen many, the standard is PDF I would say.
In the company I work, it is an embarishment to make a report in Word, eventhough I think Pagemaker is a bit overhauled.
xml-coding... I am doing a project in a company now, which is using an xml-based system for their literature (they used adobe pagemaker like everone else before). The look is simular to this, but I doubt that anyone in that company want to use office that work... they are using office to write small papers to hand out or so, but it breaks down so many times that they can't take Office seriously (eventhough Outlook runs like a charm, except when the servers are down (which they often are *sigh*)... the company employes 15.000 people worldwide, and just recently upgrade to windows 2000 (some of the win95 was getting really on peoples nerves:)
well, I see it a bit more balanced, he starts out by calling him a middleaged stereotype that has outlived himselves. Then gets more into him being still active in software-programming and "visionary" in his daily work. He also put in words like Linux, trials and customer distrust of Microsoft. I think the article is well done without being on either side (said from one who hasn't used windows for anything serious ever).
I think he means that the value of the company is 5,4+6,2=$11,6b... you are right about the cash, but it is not cash-flow... they have also invested $1,9b short term and $28m long-term... it seems they get a lot of money each month to use:) now the strategy looks nice, from one who only has a bachelor degree in finance:)
I heard in the news (here in Denmark) that Microsoft is sharing its source code with specially chosen companies... maybe somebody are trying to kiss somebodys ass again.
Eventhough I would like to say the same, in Denmark for example Microsoft just bought one of our major (minor in international view I think) computer-companies Navision. A lot of "Microsoft-money" flow into Denmark, but the question is if the former CEOs can sell those stocks.
oh come on... they are doing this because they need better landmarks in the new Simcity 4... they are talking about real simulated models of cities in the US, a game that will be called Sim city USA.
maybe because Linus Torvald likes AMD's move and dispite Intel for not making it available for the masses (through price-politics)? besides I haven't got that feeling from the article/comments.
I would have said the same (NUF SAID! :o)

seems to be an opposite slashdot-effect happening here :)

try using google-fight for more like this ... man, GPLed software wins in most cases.
http://www.googlefight.com/
*LOL* you cracked me there (I only wish where?)
It could finally make it easy for people to search and find all sorts of files -contacts, printers, documents, programs, photos
*cough* mac *cough* unix *cough* *cough* (I am having a cold)
were into interactive TV super, super early
Actually the first digital setup-box I got in the 90's was running a mac-a-like system.
*cough* super gqy Al *cough* (q can be an a sometimes)

use fink ... install it, log in as root in your terminal and write fink install filmgimp ... another solution is to use the GUI
ahh the wonders of CUPS and SAMBA. Just download SMB Browser and you are in the run! (Assuming he has Jaguar, remember to click Windows sharing)
