so do you think that all bicycles should be off the road? they can't keep up with traffic either. modern working cars -do- pollute, in fact that's where over half of the pollution comes from in my state (wa).

renting is a good idea, the ht for many people is a big investment, trying one out first is often worth it. the challenge with the segway ht is most people can't imagine what's like to use a self-balancing device like the ht and if it would make sense for their travel needs. i have a segway ht, and at first, the my commute took a little longer that i calculated mostly because people would stop and ask me questions, most would ask to try it out and many would be so impressed with the technology and ease of use, they would purchase one, i didn't expect that either, in my city (seattle) there are quite a few people with segway hts, also the city uses them as opposed to cars for many tasks.

i've gone over 800 miles on a segway ht and was able to give up a car and save quite a bit of $ per month. the city of seattle (where i live) has a fleet of segway hts, and after a year long study they're going to double the fleet. the hardest part is the cultural issues, having a car is what everyone does. there will be many posts here that poke fun of my transportation choices, but i also use a bicycle, public transit and car pools, so it's all about choices and having them...something we should all encourage.
i'm pretty impressed with the software that keeps the segway ht upright at all times, self balancing in the real world wasn't something i expected to see in a commercial device for quite some time.
a little rant....it's interesting to read many of the posts-- flying cars, end of the combustion engine, all great things to think and dream about...oh wait, many folks here have be trashing on the segway ht (my current "car") many of you have dinked people for attempting to even use one, check out the past posts, it's kinda sad. the fact that it's been pretty good for my travel needs also automatically made me "suspect" to work for segway or amazon (which i don't of course). so, when flying cars are released-- hopefully folks would be a little kinder and start to encourage tech, you'd think that would happen here more often?
right now i take my segway to work, passing a few gas stations which one day might be hydrogen stations. when i get to work, i plug my laptop in which gets 4-5 hours of battery life (at least). i also plug my segway in. this cuts out a middle man, no additional things to buy, no pumping, no replacement cells. battery life will get better as it always does. my other laptop, a tablet pc gets like 6 hours of juice. i like being able to be more "free" this way. power plants get better over time, the pollution they might cause is in one controlled area. to charge my ht or laptop it's pennies, literally. it sounds like fuels cells are good for finding new $ for a market that is getting it's power from the existing infrastructure.
sounds like a bike is a great solution for you. if i had those travel needs (280 lbs of books) i would not use a segway. just because something doesn't fit your needs doesn't mean it can't fit other people needs, it also doesn't mean you should say awful things to other humans eithers. we're all trying to lower car trips, and even give up cars-- i would never say or comment on your travel choice other than "right on!" i'm a member of the bike alliance in my state, bikes are great, i wish more folks would consider them, but many will not. so more choices (like a segway ht) are better than no choices. i don't think the price of the ht is "good" it's the first price of a version 1 product (my first pc was over $5,000 too). when you "maintaince is a nightmare" there isn't any maintaince on the ht other than plugging it in. i have a bike too, there's about the same. the ht handles rain (it doesn't snow here) dirt, grass, gravel, all that. if i need to go long distances, i'll car pool, pub transit and if i can-- cycle. feel free to email me, i think you need to stop ridiculing others and work towards encouraging choices.
thanks bigmattana, i agree with you 100%. i continue on because there are a few nerds out there like you and i-- these are tense times and i think many people here just don't know what to do with the anger, so picking on folks who are trying different things is the easiest. thanks for your kind words and support, i really appreciate it. yah, the ht works fine in the rain, i pick it up all the time, it's not heavy...it's all on my site. the future our parents were promised back in the 50's is here, it's just catching on that fast.
there isn't a seat on the ht. i didn't see that south park, i guess i'd need to so i could get that-- i'll look for it on comedy central. if anyone has the episode name / # that would be helpful, thanks.
none of it is true at all. when anyone documents something or god-forbid likes something they're suspect these days, which is fine-- i'm just as skeptical as everyone else. i 100% do not work with or for segway and / or amazon in any way what so ever. i do not get any money for documenting my experiences, i paid full price ($5000) for my segway ht. you can email me directly, you can call me on the phone you can read the about section of my site(s). i'm not really sure what more i can say than that, feel free to contact me at anytime.
the bike article says that there aren't places to charge a ebike, there are more outlets than gas stations. and for me, for my commute- i take my ht to work and charge it while i'm at work (it's not needed, but i do charge it since it's just sitting there).
i don't see why the goal is to trash electric bikes or things like the segway ht. the article didn't even mention the segway, but slashdot felt the need to. ebikes don't need to be trashed to make his gas bike look better, he could have just talked about the bike, it's cool. i'll actually try his solution out if / when it comes out, looks kinda neat.
i like my next slab (still running). the ipaq i first bought a couple years ago is still updated with the new builds of the os. the segway ht, although only 90 days old-- has been amazing. granted, these are all recent but they all exceeded by expectations.
i don't mind paying the $5, it's worth it. i read this site everyday, have for years. and as far as the ads go, i've actually found that many of the ads on slashdot have been useful, or have at least reminded me about something. sometimes knowing what's new over at thinkgeek is kinda good too. i like that i'll have access to the stories a few minutes sooner, that's nifty.
i find this somewhat ironic to read this. i use a segway ht to get around to work and home. i was able to give up a car-- not only am i saving money (about $600 per month) but it doesn't use gas. no, i don't work for / with segway in any way at all. yes, i know the power comes from somewhere...

that's bullshit. segway has -never- given away free segways to anyone "highly involved with internet from a social aspect", i did get one, so far i like it. and i paid full price, email me and i'll show you the credit card statement or call me, i really don't care. i started a site documenting it, it's a new form of transportation-- i had no clue what or if i'd like it. you should really do research and not say stuff like that which isn't true.
heya, yah the news crew came out. it was fun. if you'd like see one in person and get a demo ride-- just drop me an email, i'll arrange a time. thanks for the open mind, it really is quite useful. the price will go down, if the technology succeeds. cheers.
they're not out to the public yet, i'm one of 30 people that have them (early delivery contest, still needed to pay full price though)...in 30 to 60 days-- they're going to be out as people get their training and delivery.
now that the thread has "cooled" down. if you're in the seattle area, feel free to send me an email and i'll arrange a demo (as in you can try my segway ht).
it's really hostile, but that's always been true about most topics here.
i think you're right...if they sell 1,000 that's $5 million, 10,000 segway hts, that's $50 million.
who knows what's going to happen, but companies can have low marketshare (apple, bmw, etc..) and still do fine. the price can always go down, dvd players are almost free, many of us paid over $1000 when they first came out.
i can get to work / home faster and safer on the segway ht than on rollerblades. i do like to rollerblade, but it's not a way to commute for me (8+ miles, seattle terrain, time needed).
i seem to be fine in seattle with my segway ht, i wear a coat and hat if it's raining, that's about all there is to it, it's really not a problem. i also take a car, car pool, bike or work from home too. it's about choices and less car trips total per year. if you can bike to work great, many of us can't for many reasons-- so it's car or something else, i use a segway, gave up a car, saving over $600 per month. it's all relative, so far i've been pleased, results may vary.
i go over the queen anne hill each day (a 18 to 25% grade in some areas). it's pretty impressive.
