Well yes BT are not the cheapest, however they also have to install a telephone line anywhere at all in the UK for you for a fixed relatively low price and keep it working.
Other providers can cherry pick only the profitable exchanges.
Additioanlly BT wholesale will sell you a pipe to your customer and that is covered by the cost of the monthly charge and a bandwidth limit. The more you pay the more bandwidth you get. Thats how things work. An ISP has a guarnateed maximum downtime and response time to any problems from BT and it costs a lot to keep things working.
It's not like you can just sling an ethernet cable from one place to another. Fibers regularly get broken by rats, traffic works, trees, other telephone companies etc digging the roads up. The backhaul to the rest of the world is what the 655Mb pipe is for. The link from the Exchange to the ISP network should be paid for in the monthly charges to the customer.
If the bomb is dropped at supersonic speeds it might not get away from the aircraft and so be hit by the aircraft in flight and destroy the aircraft. I see no reason not to use software to stop a pilot in a high adrenalin environment from blowing themselves and an expensive fighter up.
In most meetings at least one person is dozing off a bit. The problem isn't meetings, it is too many meetings to the extent that the time taken to do the job is occupied by meetings so there is no time to do the work in hand.

What is Perl 6?

RAID 6 is pretty much the same as RAID 5, except that the parity is stored on two disks not just one. This is so that the array can cope with the failure of more than one disk.

I'm sorry to say this, but there are too many people who think something is cool because it uses the latest hip technology. Nobody cares that it is AJAX, they just care that it works well and does what they want.
The sooner OSS and other people writing software out there realise this the better.
£7.50+ per adult in a standard seat eg no leg room. £3.00+ for a popcorn. £2.00+ for a drink.
So thats £22 for a couple translates at current rates at about 39USD
Now think that the typicl UK cinema is designed to cram people in, and not that comfortable. Some are pretty filthy too lots of popcorn stuck to the floor.
Then you have the films.
After a short time on release the sound (especially SDDS has degraded because some idiot decided it was a good idea to put it on the edge of the film) goes funny. Many of the films I see have a few sound drop outs which are annoying.
The arthouse and some flicks are good, but I would say at least 85% of what comes out is crap or not worth paying that much for.
Films get rated as a watch, DVD rental or can't be bothered for me.

And a random useless piece of info:
If you want to never be able to watch a film in peace again look out for the change over dots at the top right corner of the film. One at the start and end of every real. I can't Ignore the things now I noticed them:(
IE 7 will analyse your internet connection and automatically detect patents which may be of use to Microsoft. There are then two possible actions which the user can choose:
Submit the web-form direct to redmond.
Submit the form with the assignemnt changed to a random Microsoft employeee of the day
This way we can rip you off and patent your invention without resorting to bankrupting you via legal fees.
So why didn't you hear about the Bristish randomly shooting people for the hell of it?
Not saying that your pressure cooker comments are untrue, as I am sure the situation is nasty, however shoot then ask questions is generally the wrong thing to do.
Why a 2 front war when we have not caught Bin Ladin yet.
Because we have the most powerful, best-trained military in the world, and can work on two things at once.
Yeah, you lot are so good that you regularly shoot your own side. Not to mention that the US army is rediculously trigger happy too.
You might have the bigest army in the world, but that sure as hell doesn't make it the best. Training is what counts, and from what I see on the news (including abc) it appears that some parts of the US Army/Navy require more of that.
I am in the same position as the grandparent poster.
It's kinda simple let people get on with their lives and don't enforce things them.
There of plenty of people who just decided not to scream down the hills at everyone else until they cave in. It's called choice and is a wonderful thing.

What you mean the binary warez transfer protocol (BWTP) :P
The use of Microsoft Document Format documents is less compatible to the point of not really being satisfactory.
Why not...

Unfortunately you couldn't run a Dual 16x SLI setup and a 10Gb Ethernet and a SAS controller on this board.
A PCIe 4x will only shift 8Gb of data ((2.5Gb * 4 = 10Gb) * 8/10 (for encoding) = 8Gb)
4 SAS lanes are in theory 10Gb of data and obviously a 10Gb ethernet is also 10Gb
So to have an all singing all dancing SLI + 10Gb + SAS you would need (2*16xLanes = 32) + (2*8xLanes=16) = 48 Lanes total.
Still not a bad improvement.
I would be looking more towards future PCIe 2 spec based system for putting a system like this out.
They give you more time to sleep in.

The question is "What is Perl 6"?
The Question is "Who Cares"
No Raid 6 allows 2 drives to fail at the same time without data loss.
RAID 5 can't do that.
RAID 6 is pretty much the same as RAID 5, except that the parity is stored on two disks not just one. This is so that the array can cope with the failure of more than one disk.

I think that the new Niagra based systems are a pretty good talking point.
Not to mention the particulalry nice opteron systems that sun are churning out now.
Hello Core Memory...
Seriously core memory was magnetic and was first thing I thought of when I read the headline.
This brings a whole new meaning to Google Earth.

It's already been said, but WTF!!!
In other News Slashdot Editors get group altzhiemers and don't realise they have already posted the same article a few days previously.

Thats pretty pathtic you're right.
Oh well in other news
- What on earth has the Platt patent application got to do with the iPods user interface.
- There are plenty of examples or rotary dials controlling linear scales. My old walkman had one as do most older radios.
Turn the wheel clockwise the line on scale goes up.
Turn it anticlockwise the line on the scale goes down.
How on earth is this new?
I'm sorry but much as I like apple this really isn't anything new.

Man, somebody in the whitehouse is on crack, or have a laugh and seeing how far they can push things.
This sounds completely crazy.
Somebody might want to tell NASA not to bother with their research on Mars as the creatures if any found couldn't have evolved over time.
