Observation (of both behaviour and appearance) is influenced by the observer and is variable. Two people never see the same thing the same way. Ask a man and wife what colour the living-room couch is and you will get two different answers! =)

The DNA sequence will never lie, and that sequence will tell us FAR more about common evolutionary traits then our eyeballs will.

  4. Same problem as movies. on Survival-Horror Genre Going Extinct? · · Score: 4, Interesting

True horror/fright can only be produced by ones imagination. While Hitchcock understood this and did a decent job of using it only books ever get it right. Instead today as with movies you mostly get sub-par lighting that hides things from your view.

Remember the mess that Doom3(?) was that you couldn't hold your shotgun and flashlight at the same time? The game imposed a limitation on you that felt forced and limited the submersion.

One game that got it right; Thief. The suspense of trying to sneak, and then panic heart-attack when you step on a squeaky floor!

I have played Alone in the Dark, and many others in the genre but none have ever had me wound-uptight as Thief did.

Yes Dune2 was kick-ass. (It still is too!) Most RTS now depend on who builds the most grunts the quickest, wins. That removes the whole 'S'trategy aspect of the game.

    270 Lumens

The claim is 270L for 1.5h, using three emitters. It looks from that close-up of the head that Crees are used, so most likely XR-Es. I'll use a rough 100L/W for my estimates.

    270L/3 = 90L per emitter

90L corresponds to about 350mA at 3.2V (very roughly) from an XR-E.

    If*Vf*emitters*time = energy

    0.35A*3.2V*3*1.5h = 5.04Wh

So, the supercap has about 5Wh in it (again, very roughly).

The above assumes 270L at the emitter. Let's say it's 270L OTF, which would mean around 360L at the emitters.

    360/3 = 120L per emitter

120L corresponds to, say, 450mA at 3.3V or so.

    0.45A*3.3V*3*1.5h = 6.7Wh

This more optimistic estimate (in terms of both energy storage and lumen claims) puts us at a little under 7Wh for the supercap used in the light.

Let's see what we get with a common AW 18650:

    3.7V*2.2Ah=8.14Wh

So, this flashlight's power source has around 62% (pessimistically) or 82% (optimistically) of the energy of an 18650, but is several times the size.

I think I'll pass on this one.

ST is old. We have had 18 YEARS of non-stop Trek (TNG aired in 1987, Enterprise ended in 2005) and reusing the same script for many of those shows. We were/are tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. You know what we are not tired of?

Hope, charisma, and a calm assurance of success.

TOS had this in spades, and we responded with resounding joy. The others all took a piece of that formula, but none had it the same.

This movie looks like it has nothing to offer but flash and CGI. The original Kirk could have just as easily been a pirate-ship captain; he was cunning, daring, full of guile, and a swashbuckler. This new Kirk looks like Prep-School prankster.

This reboot looks like it has lost the original intent. That is why it will fail.

  19. Value over Lifespan not ROI on On the Economics of the Kindle · · Score: 3, Interesting

The advantage e-books have over dead-tree versions is in technical material. Shop manuals, technical schematics, medical journals, etc. Any material where being able to 'search' would be a benefit. E-books offer almost 0 benefit for casual or 'entertainment' reading. But that isn't the point. Source material longevity is the key. A good quality hardcover can last HUNDREDS of years! Try that with any electronic device or file-system. I remember a time not too long ago when 16 registers on a CPU were a big deal, and DOS apps couldn't read Mac files (even the 'simple' ASCII txt files) and there were different file-system structures 7bit vs 8bit vs *. We think that .txt is the safest solution for portability and longevity but IBM used to think the same thing about punch-cards!

If you are going to invest enough money in a Kindle to make it a 'worthy' purchase, then you are that-much-more going to benefit 50 years from now with your library of real-books and a pair of eyeballs as your interface to them.
