I tried Xandros 2.0 (a friends version). I thought it was really easy to use, as easy as windows to install, setup etc. HOWEVER - unfortuately for me - while browsing the net (mozilla) I still get the mouse pointer freezing (sometimes dissapearing altogether), sluggish thumnbail browsing and a sluggish interface in general. I'm not a windows pusher but I have to say XP on the same machine at least appears to have a much zippier GUI. This is not to slag of Xandros 2.0 - they've done great. It may just be linux in general? I don't mean to rant, but until I see a SMOOTH GUI I can't change. I hate sluggishness! Now as for that 'abomination that is windows' comment, you should at least give it credit for it's good points even though it's expensive as hell and made by the devil.
FYI - I have fairly new hardware (gf4ti400, athlonxp 3000+) with 1 gig of ram.
I've got a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (on an Athlon XP 1900+), running Gentoo rc2, and... guess what, with the 'nvidia' kernel module. It's a bit better than the 'nv', but it still feels doggy and 'Not quite right'.
Your argument that "It's only slow because of your drivers", at least for me, is unjustified.
3D feels just as fust as Windows with Quake 3, but sometimes freezes in crucial moments!
Hmm. Manged to squeeze a look. VERDICT: Looks quite plain jane to me! As for DOS - what did that look like? I recall a blank screen with a prompt, just like linux:)
Maybe a demise of XFree86 would push developers to move to picoGUI, DirectFB or Fresco. Who knows, (risking a flame war here) this may actually be a good thing in the long run. From what we keep hearing, XFree86 is desperately outdated and has unecessary bloat that standalone desktops don't need. Indeed, we need a viable choice yet this may even further polarise the unice's choice of GUI.
Just my 3 cents.
Hot swappable? Pfft! I take out my AMD XP1900+ in and out all the time, and you betcha - it's HOT. My system tends to become a little unstable, but when I put it back in and after a reboot everything is fine.
In all the ramblings of Linux vs Windows (that was WAY off topic huh?), I don't think I saw a reference to the dumb nerds. A what? Yes you read right! An un-intelligent nerd. I know I had a few friends back in school who fit the typical Erkel description (with differing races of course) but couldn't score 20% in the averge class test - BUT the important thing to notice is: they weren't liked either! However, there are some nerds, who were just really *NICE* people, that everyone liked regardless. Strange world huh?
As for me, heck, I'm one of a kind. The biggest stud frown down under - I impress the chicks at clubs with my laptops - compiling JSP's in under a minute. It goes a little something like "Hey babe, type your name in the form, then click submit" *types her name in* is gorgeous, can I take you home?
Works for me! God I'm good.

Sheesh no wonder my heart's screaming at 200 bpm! Tell me, kind sir, what do you know about propecia and the possible reversal of ones sexuality?
Neat robot by the way, Mitsubish has come a long way from that dreaded Zeke!
It should go somewhere useful and do useful things! For instance, what is the benefit of sending Australian spiders into space? I for one, would like to see useful science experiments get carried out. Example
1) Urinating into your own mouth safely 2) Spewing up and running away 3) The possibility of having an "3000 mile high club" 4) Checking which direction the toilet flushes
and so forth. Call me insensitive (God bless their souls), but these are the answers NASA should be providing.
I agree! But what we need even *more* than that is a server to detect when my kettle is boiling, and another that notifies me (via email) when my alcohol stash needs refilling.
I'm amazed at how many people are writing this. I've been using XP since Nov 2001, and it's still running on that same install, perfectly. The only time it crashed was when my CPU overheaded due to a falty fan. What is it! Am I doing something wrong that I can't get it to crash that often?
BTW - KDE looks amazing. Guess I'll d/l gentoo and try it out.

WMD? Wimps of Mass Demonisation. All I can say is, DON'T go there :)
I can see it now - "Be the life of the party with your new, musical Gonads". Where do I sign up?

What's wrong with you guys, I'm still wiping my eyes. Keep the funny posts coming!
I'm so lucky my surname isn't MacIntosh (McIntosh) or anything Mac :)

What is Helms Deep Battle? I can't remember that level in Doom? *crawls back into dungeon*
Finally! Maybe I'll buy a Mac, but wait... I don't think the bank will let me take a second mortgage.

Yeah I know how he feels. As a closet gigolo, I find myself motivated to kick off my programming hills and get my self into a robe & slippers.
Max Headroom is a porn star.

And XP crashed way too often
