  1. Re:OT on Marquette Dental Student Suspended For Blogging · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the fact that the student is being punished for the statements made on the blog indicate that it wasn't posted anonymously. I believe that the line "wishes to remain anonymous" is referring to the fact that he or she has no wish to be nationally villified / martyred for what is essentially a local matter.

That's already a problem. Some municipal liquor stores in the Minneapolis suburbs require that you let them swipe your ID as proof of age (they claim they don't store the information; it just enables the register when they swipe the ID) but when I've gone through those, they just swipe it without ever looking at it. The more complex the actual IDs get, the less actual intelligence is applied by the person authenticating.

  3. Bulbs on Video Projector for Home Theater? · · Score: 5, Informative

I was looking into projectors as well, but discovered a big drawback: the bulbs are good for about 2000 hours and then run about $350 (on average) for a new one. That's a lot of money every couple of years...

While I also find the legal attack irritating, I think the reason for it may be that if M$ ignores 'Lindows' because it isn't a money threat, it erodes their ability in court (IANAL) to fight off others who use the same kind of naming scheme to evoke Windows in order to market their product. It seems petty (and it may be) from a company the size of Microsoft, but it's not *just* vendictive. There's an actual reason behind it.

Personally, I'd prefer that every progam that starts an 'agent' of some sort to load an icon in SysTray. I'd rather see it there right away than find it in a monthly sweep of the registry. (Of course, I'd also like every app in the systray to include a 'disable' option on the context menu [and while I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony and a red wagon as well].)

That would be "god", small "g". "God" in the context of our society clearly does not refer to Allah or any god other than the Christian one.

This is a distinction that most people screw up. Of course senators and reps will be able to sing "God Bless America." Supreme Court justices will be able to mention God. Bush will be able to make his decisions based on his faith. however, the Constitution prohibits Congress from codifying "an establishment of religion" as part of this country's law, which is what they did when they added "...under God..." and "In God We Trust" to the pledge and currency. FYI, "In God We trust" was added right about the same time that the Pledge was modified, rather than having been there forever as most people seem to assume.
