Just got my HTPC built and running STEAM on WINE but its a bit slow to start up. Now the kids can fuck right off when I hear "Can you load up windows on our computers so we can play games" With my Winows 8 experience http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3321547&cid=42315901 this is just another nail in the coffin.
Without piracy, I have a clear route for making an income from my work. With piracy, I have to hope that my work becomes a loss leader for itself, reaching a wider paying audience through a non-paying medium.
So how do you explain Photoshop and MS Windows being pirated by the tens of thousands for 15+ years yet they remains profitable and market leaders. Hell PS has a monopoly on the market. I'll tell you why, those products have a value that is not easily forgotten. Your books are good for a day worth of reading then done just like most entertainment. With the evolution of the internet your little manufactured scarcity went out the window. People now want instant entertainment and the technology has been there since MP3, Napster and the first PERL based shopping carts. Yet 90% of entertainment industry seems to not get it.
Ok ok lets talk about disposable entertainment. How in the world can porn be so profitable when its probably pirated more then anything, yet people are making millions on porn. They found new themes and ways to deliver their product to their users and this is why they stay profitable.
Look at the Antique business and how the internet all of a sudden made rare items not so rare anymore and lose their value. Some things are not meant to last for ever and look like lots of entertainment styles are not meant to be profitable in the internet age anymore. Maybe time to fine a new career, after all 50% of the population will go through several careers in their life times Why is writers/producers/entertainers be any different?
I was hoping http://kylo.tv/ Kylo browser would fix the browser issue for me but its pretty flaky on my Linux Mint 14 Mate HTPC. Opera Mobile looked but but that too was crashing and just didn't feel like debugging it.
Can we get a 10 FOOT UI? After setting up my first HTPC last week I'm really surprised no one has a 10 FOOT UI desktop. Yah KDE has the Notebook Plasma but its just not good.

Ordered a HP laptop for my son as a present. It arrives at work and my plan is to load up MInt 14 MATE but first I might as well make a recovery disk for Windows just in case I have to send the laptop for repairs.. Anyways I go through the normal first time install.
Well so I install it and I'm greeted with some weird screen that has boxes all over the place and I have to scroll sideways to see the rest. WTF? There's a reason no website scrolls sideways and just up and down. Ok ok maybe there's a reason for this madness. So I'm moving the mouse around trying to get some kind of a panel/menu. I get one but can't figure out where to get the programs menu. Also noticed something weird when I moved the mouse over to the corner, a small screen shots appears. I'm like WTF, OK?
Anyways I look online and find the menu to create the backups disk or in this case "5" DVD disk or a USB drive that requires min 20 gigs of space. WTF again? Christ most Linux distros are one DVD. Ok what ever, I go ahead and it says I can't use DVD-RW ony DVD-R, well fuck me.
Ok I give up and decide I will just get a 32gig USB drive later. I go do some work and I guess as I was turning around to my desktop the mouse must have moved to one of the corners and somehow the desktop appeared. Now I didn't notice this till about an hour later when I turn around and see the desktop there and the start screen is gone. So now I'm scratching my head as to what happened. Eventually I figure out that moving the mouse to the corner and clicking the small screen shot would flip me between desktop and start screen. BUT WHY?
So today I start the laptop and figure ok get the little screen shot in the corner to flip to the desktop. Well its not showing, mother fucker I think I'm gonna need beer for this. Eventually clicking on Norton AV brings me back and now I can flip back and forth.

ragging on the article OP probably haven't got a clue that people actually use other methods than Twitter/Facebook to update users about their service. Why is everything have to be in the open social communication. If someone was tracking his twitter it would take a few seconds to block all the proxy domains.
Actually I'll tell you a true story. In the late 80's when I lived in the interior of BC (Kamloops) me and my buddy use to walk probably close to 5 km each way down and up hill from Aberdeen area to Overwaitea which is a large grocery store chain to rent Sega Genesis games on his moms account.
This was when they were just finishing the Coquihalla HWY so we walked on the unpaved way. Kamloops use to get some nasty winters and there was lots of snow threading and frozen feet as we though we were cool walking in running shoes.
Whats sad that 24 year later getting your entertainment is not much different here as the online streaming services are almost non existent.

Ask much as I hate MS I realized that the Tabet UI could be a way for MS to sell a lot of W8's licenses to people who want a 10-Foot UI for their HTPC. I just built a A-8 5600K HTPC last week and I'm running Linux Mint on it but most of the Netbook UI's have disappeared and the Kubuntu Netbook Plasma was too flaky with the AMD drivers. Yah I adjusted the font sizes and what not but if you want to use non XBMC software you need to get close to the tv. Noe thing that might save my sanity for browsing the internet might be Kylo browser http://kylo.tv/ Will try it out today.
So I wouldn't write W8 off yet, money is money as long as people are installing in on PC hardware im sure MS will be happy.
Wouldn't it make sense to get the big cities/metropolitan areas first, that way you corner the market while forcing the telcos out and having them concentrate on rural areas to make money. Then you swoop in the kill that market
OR come to Canada first and stop the mass rape that is called internet here.
One things that I'd be wearing about is the same thing that is happening now. Content distributors running the internet networks. No conflict of interest there or nothing like that.
