"I still take persuasions..." I assume you meant precautions? I'm not sure how to take a persuasion...

On that note, you're definitely right about Windows users not taking precautions, but the problem is that that isn't going to change. Most Windows users don't know enough to know what precautions to take. I have enough trouble getting my grandfather to remember how to get on the internet. I'd rather have to clean his computer on a regular basis than try to explain to him how to avoid viruses and malware, and even if I tried, it wouldn't work anyways. Same thing with my little sister. I've tried to explain how bad an idea clicking everything in sight is, but she continues to do it.

As to the drivers, I don't think it's as big a problem as you think. Yeah, they're likely full of security holes, but no driver is prevalent enough to warrant a widespread attack. It's similar to how Windows is the most exploited OS largely due to its popularity. If someone created a virus that used a specific driver's security hole, they wouldn't be able to infect very many people, so it's not going to happen. This becomes even more true with lower-quality products, since a single low-quality product is usually not that widespread.

That's why we use hybrid systems.

Slashdot is basically a democratic system, and as a result, we get exactly that, tyranny of the majority. Wikipedia is basicaly an anarchistic system, with each person doing what they feel is beneficial.

Same applies to the Marines, Air Force, etc. They're pretty careful about this.

I just couldn't see how you went from a small electric car to a big SUV, especially seeing as how you highlighted how terrible the SUV's gas mileage was in your earlier post. You know, there are in-betweens. For example, my mom drives a Honda Element, which does a pretty good job of towing our trailer while still getting mid-to-high 20s gas mileage. I'm not criticizing your choice of car, I was just responding to your own criticisms. You made it sound like since you couldn't get the EV1, you had no choice but to end up in an SUV, whereas there are plenty of other choices out there.

You do have a point in that things actively running will have issues coming back from slep mode, since it's trying to run the program while still restoring everything back to RAM. But bloatware generally isn't something that runs actively, it usually just takes up your RAM. Under normal use, even bloatware won't affect the time it takes to come back from sleep much.

The whole idea behind suspend/speel mode is that it can just drop all the info back into RAM without having to go through the process of starting up the programs. It's not re-opening all that stuff, it's just resuming from exactly the point it was at. Therefore, regardless of how much is running, it won't affect start-up time, cause it's writing the entire contents back to RAM either way.

You're not kidding. I spent a LONG time looking for Broadcom drivers for Linux, couldn't find them or get anyone to tell me anything useful. For those who have the time and willingness to go through the effort, bravo. Other people have more valuable things to do. Switching OSes takes hours of work and it will be weeks before you have everything working properly and the way you like it. Add on top of that possible hardware issues (I never switched to Linux because every time I mess around with it, I am reminded how terrible ATI Linux drivers are and that there aren't drivers for my Broadcom chip wireless card).
