To pick up on one thing you mentioned:

In the US, at least, we've managed to trim back access to such powers by separating church from state.

I thought that the US constitution said something like "..shall make no law regarding religion...".

But doesn't this imply that a _religion_ should not be given tax exempt status? I could understand a charitable branch of a religion being given a tax exemption, but not the whole organisation. So, how does that work?

    To further your theory...

I suspect Disney have already seen how difficult it is to introduce a comprehensive DRM scheme when the pre-existing alternative has no (or easily circumvented) DRM.

So I suspect they will be looking to introduce DRM-Lite with only moderate restrictions.

Once embedded into the marketplace, they will then be able to increase restrictions and gently introduce the "view at our discression" limitations.

I find this hard to believe.

If a joystick really gave you better control, they would be using them in racing cars, where every advantage is sought. I suspect the primary disadvantage is the lack of feedback. In driving a car at the limit you need to be able to feel what the steering and suspension is doing. Simulated feedback doesn't cut it.

  5. Re:Power Steering failure? on Toyota Experimenting With Joystick Control For Cars · · Score: 1
Many modern cars have electric power steering.

I'm not certain, but I would think that these would still work normally if the engine stops.

Now, if you have electrical problems, you could still be in trouble.

which would compensate for that effect

    I think you misunderstood.

Unsprung weight needs to be controlled in motion by suspension and steering. So, geater unsprung weight has a negative impact on the handing of the vehicle.

Not so much to do with acceleration and braking (though wheel weight and rotational inertia does come into it).

As you point out, there are some advantages to the motor-in-wheel design which hopefully outweigh the negatives.
