That's tripe. I bet if we really wanted to we could take any of your thoughts and relate them to marketing or TV personalities. Just because that relationship exists does not mean that the marketing or TV personality CAUSED that belief or thought.
Another post telling us to kill our TVs on Slashdot. How original.
In any case as most of the other replies have mentioned, it's quite simple to watch TV and still have independent thoughts. Any time I watch a news show it is usually spent rebutting the points that (Bush|Hannity|etc) are making. It's also quite possible to watch TV and not be a slave to it. My strategy to avoid this is simple: If nothing is on, don't watch it. I have a few shows which I watch religiously (by taping and watching on my own time), and aside from that do not watch much TV. In the evening I tend to do more "surfing", but again, if nothing is on I will move on to something else.
As an aside, just because you're not watching TV doesn't mean you're making independent thoughts. Just by reading Slashdot you are influenced. It is not possible to make independent thoughts in this world.
Weak-minded people will always let other people write their opinions. This has happened before TV, and it will happen after TV.
You're talking about replacing crap sound-tracks in mediocre games, while I'm talking about wanting to retain excellent, mood enhancing, genre defining music
That's great. So don't replace the music in that game.. DUH.
I'd just as soon turn the in-game volume down and play WinAMP off of my computer.
Also great, but considering the XBox is in another room which only has a server/firewall in it, it's not an option for me (or most people, I would imagine).
Also if you follow your road, you lose sound effects, which is not always desired.
Because, whether you care to acknowledge it or not, GTA3 and GTA3:VC are extraordinary games. They go far above and beyond the standard for a "good" game. And that is why they are popular.
That said, if you expect publishers of every game to include such a rich soundtrack, be prepared to pay more and/or wait longer for games.
BUT if a game has such a shitty soundtrack that I have to replace it with my own music, I'm probably not playing that game very much.
So you're saying if GTA3 had a shitty soundtrack you wouldn't play? I mean, that's just an outrageous statement. If you are playing or not playing games based on the quality of the soundtrack... in any case, it would be nice to see all games have great soundtracks, but I don't think the producers of MotoGP really gave 2 shits about the music. Mind you the gameplay is great (dunno if you played it with all that shitty music in there), but I was able to but in some Bach as my music, which makes the game near-perfect.
Furthermore PG isn't really a racer. It's more about technical driving, autox, etc.
Guess what: They may be in the process of being ported, but they will be better, and play better on the XBox.
Case in point: 007 Nightfire. Play this game on both PS2 and XBox and you'll want to throw your PS2 out the window. The resolution is just downright crappy along with the framerate. Also when I played on PS2 (w/ 3 others) we could only add 4 bots, where on Xbox you can add 6 (note: I have not played with more than 2 people total on XBox, so this may change if you play 4P on the XBox).
XBox won't win with exclusives, it will win simply by out performing all the other consoles in the "common" games.
I have an Xbox with my saves on a hard drive. My friend has an XBox with his saves on a hard drive. We want to play with our profiles on the same system. Do it without memory cards. Write back when you're done.
Note: modding both boxes and ftp'ing the data through a 3rd host is an unacceptable answer.
As someone below noted, dial-up users are left in the dark for a reason. Modem technology is dead. You cannot play modern games over a modem. It's that simple.
Well the grandparent was right on when he said you can't argue with fanboys.
And parent makes something very apparent if you read closely.. "after seeing Halo".. "I'll never have to play", meaning of course he never took the time to actually play the thing, but knows just how much it really really sucks!
I found GT3 to be severly lacking in any sort of collision engine. Not to say that the XBox's counterpart, Sega GT, is any better in the same department. When I can race around at near full-throttle cornering-by-wall, it's just not very good.
Either way, if you are a fan of car/racing games, then XBox is the way to go. I don't know what titles are exclusive but currently I have played MotoGP, Project Gotham, Burnout, NFS:HP2, and they all look and play great, IMO.
Ideas for thought:
How much of a performance hit might PS2 backwards compatibility give to the PS3? I suppose if it was built on the same architecture but just with larger pipes, more ram, and faster chips there would be little to no performance hit.
2nd, I don't think most people buying the XBox are concerned about security and stability. Traditionally, game consoles have always been stable (I cannot recall a glitch/crash on a game console that I could repeat at will, only random crashes), and most people don't consider their savegames to be mission critical data that needs the best security.
I do own an XBox and have had it crash, but this was during an FTP transfer, so it was far from a stock XBox at that point, and it would be very hard to say that the crash was caused by some error on Microsoft's part as there was little/no Microsoft code running on the box at the time.
Particularly the case with MS apps, only they can explain why my XP 2600+/333 smokes the computer at work in everything but loading MS applications.
From my experience, I've found that MS office apps are actually loaded faster than anything else on my system. Word starts much faster than Phoenix does, and lets not even get started on the newest Winamp.
While it was tricky to line up the Matrix at first, I wouldn't say it was that difficult. What was more tricky was getting the damned thing to stay in place (buying longer screws at Home Depot helped immensely, as the original screw is only meant to secure the m/b). Also, if he was buying the Matrix to avoid soldering, you still have to solder in your link (and note you also need to buy/make a CheapLPC).
In one case, I'd like to see more outrage, dropped subscriptions, and police involvement -- the fact that they're a respected magazine in no way gives them the attempt to try to crack routers en masse.
Yes just what we need, more black and white reading of the law!
Law and punishment in this country is based mostly upon intent. Kill someone in self defense, and it's not a crime. Kill someone because you don't like them, and you're going to be in trouble.
While Wired may have technically cracked these DSL modems, until someone either proves that they caused damage or intended to cause damage, there has not been a crime committed (imo).
Yes the analogy that breaking into my house but not stealing anything is still a crime is going to come up. To head it off, when you break into someone's house, you cause physical damage. If someone managed to get into my house without damaging anything, and took nothing, I would see no reason to press charges (and more likely, I would never have known they were there).
Logging remotely into a DSL modem does not cause any damage. In fact most people would agree that Wired's little escapade has resulted in benefit rather than damage.
I cannot see how this system caused numbers to be used faster. The same amount of demand for phone numbers would have existed whether or not they had used separate area codes for cells.
As others pointed out he's compared the wrong file sizes. None of you bothered to post the correct figure though.
On Windows (2000), my phoenix directory is 12 MB. That is with ~5-10 components added, which is very little added size.
...but I don't care how my images look on the PC I use, as long as when I print it, it comes out the way I want. Only once have I had a real color matching problem between my system and my printer, and switching over to a Pantone fixed everything.
With all the flash adverts at "every site" I sure as hell have no problem ignoring them just like i ignore non-flash animated gifs and even static banner ads. Sure, they pull a little more CPU, but I've got cycles to spare, and as long as you've upgraded in the past 3 years, so do you.
Seriously, if you don't like flash adverts, at least have the sense to not bitch if someone wants to use flash for a good purpose. As with just about everything else in life, you can't have it both ways.
Obviously written by someone who has never used the advanced features of Word.

Good catch. Also note that this divison would theoretically include the WebTV / MSN (whatever they're calling it now) set top boxes.
If Futurama is anywhere near accurate, sadly we haven't.
If I recall correctly, didn't the Sony CDs which could be broken with a magic marker also bear the CD logo?

The lesson is, don't be stupid and wait hours to see if your message was actually recieved. I would have called after 10 mins with no reply from you.

Printshops still use Macs, but if the printer you were using used ONLY Macs, it's time to find a new printer.
