"The Rail Gun upgrade should be completed soon. I than (sic) plan on firing it with a plasma armature, incorporate an inductor into the circuit, and research the effect on efficiency of different pulse lengths and armature compositions."
This is one guy you DO NOT want to slashdot....
It's the difference between love of money and love of your job I suppose.
People who are more interested in creating a product that THEY want (BSD developers) are more likely to create a product other people will want.
People who are creating a product OTHER people want (as in MS developers making products for their managers' current whims) just won't have the heart for it.
Of course... an outright disgust and ditrust of your customers helps create a faulty product as well:\
... that this is nothing but good news, I'm sure that the ever-vigilant slashdotters will manage to start a flame war about it! Let the BSD wars begin... again!
I sometimes think that the attention span of the average radio listener must be on a half life of a year or so. Eventually we'll get to the point where the radio will literally play the same rotation of songs, restarting at the top of the hour. We're already at the point where the rotations repeats every 4 or 5 hours on some stations (with the more popular songs peppered in a few extra times for good measure). It drives us nuts, but it must be making money, and for it to be making money, people must be buying into it.
This is another one of those fights where we're going to lose because we don't understand our enemy. Clearchannel is not the enemy. Congresspeople are not the enemy. OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY who don't understand what's happening are the enemy! The majority of consumers probably don't know who clearchannel is. We must EDUCATE them so they know that each time they put in a dollar vote to the latest pop sensation, they're helping to kill free market capitalism and create free market socialism.
Get out there and tell EVERYONE you can at every opportunity that we need to stop supporting the big record companies. Introduce them to indies and older music! A lot of kids who listen to modern rock (translation: the reconstituted garbage of yesterday) probably never heard of bands like Lynard Skynard or Pink Floyd. They'd probably like it if they did though. The wider a selection of music you introduce to these people-sheep the more choices they'll realize they have. The whole effect will snowball, and they'll start experimenting with new things. This can only lead to good things... personally, I'm not going to lose any sleep if I'm responsible for the owners of Clearchannel having to move out into the street.
If you think about it, the average slashdotters diet of Cheetos and Mountain Dew, coupled with the inactivity of sitting for 3 and one half hours per article (only 1 and one half for dupes) reading at a -1 threshold, invites this sort of thing...
But,in the name of public interest, here's a good way for the average lazy-ass slashdotter (myself included) to prevent it: get up and do stretches every hour or so (the whole walk to the other side of the room and back seems a bit light). Just stretch your arms some and do a little leg stretching. The blood flow should increase enough to help prevent e-petrification blood clots.
Of course, if you're actually too lazy to do even that, just stand up and do a couple of toe touchs every once in awhile... basically, anything that gets your muscles moving should help prevent it (of course, your heart is still going to turn to slush and bleed out your pores - but hey - you can't be expected to take ALL the responsibility for your well-being, right?).
...who is your representative in Washington? How do you contact them? Do you know what their position is on the issue? Have you (intelligently) made them aware of your position on the issue? Do you still buy Digital Media? Are you just bitching because you want to be one of the people who steals it?
I think a lot of people need to stop talking and start doing something. This issue pops up on/. what... every 20 or 30 minutes? What good is it going to do you to keep voicing your opinion here? You're just preaching to a choir of people who are preaching to the choir.
If you're so absolutely lazy that you can't be bothered to write up a logical, intelligent e-mail, join EFF and at least use their default e-mails to mail your reps and let them know that corporate ownership of your life is NOT acceptable and you WILL help "throw the bums out" if they don't do something about it.
I'm sure a lot of people here do take action against the crooks in Hollywood, but I also guarantee it's not enough....
After all, since the average song stays a hit for about a week, the average CD holds strong sales for a month, and the average band is gone after a year, why shouldn't we let them use the 14 year rule?
In the meantime, you can't copy the disc for your own use in different players. You can't make digital copies to store on your different PCs. You can't print your eBooks while the content is still meaningful. In other words - the "copyright holders" (and we all know that means "the big corporations that are leeching off talented people") get everything they want and you get... um... a kick in the nuts?
Course Description:
Anime (V33.0709) This course introduces students to the rich world of Japanese animation or anime, its form and style, history, popular genres and themes, major authors, and fan culture. We will explore the popularity of anime in relation to the cultural conditions of contemporary Japan and to the context of cultural globalization which is radically transforming the way audio-visual images are produced and consumed.
It's kind of nice to see that Anime is finally being recognize, after so many years, for it's massive cultural influences all over the world. It's gone from being a somewhat-maligned form of geek|children's entertainment to a full-fledged industry/art form. I think it would be interesting to see what's up next on the platter? Maybe the entire geek world can be examined for it's influences on modern culture. Think about it this way: someday your kids could be reading literature in school that includes archived Slashdot posts your doing now! Well.. considering how many "hentai tentacle rape" posts are bound to pop up here... maybe not.
... would be to stop spreading FUD like "the biggest thing the PHP community needs to start serious dialog on is how to meld it with the business world"
Ummm... or maybe we should try what I REALLY said: that the PHP community needs to start serious dialog on how to meld it with the business world. As in: PHP IS ready for the primetime, now the community needs to talk about GETTING it there, because like it or not... it's not there. Again, this is because it has a kiddie language attached to it. Attitudes like "PHP is too easy to learn - it must be weak" or "PHP is just a beginner's language, it doesn't try to provide real functionality" must be eliminated.
PHP, when learned properly, does not have the limitations that people place on it. However, now the PHP community needs to sell that point to the folks who count - everyone's favorites - the PHB's with money.
Are they telling me that if I write useless code intentionally I'm increasing my chance of errors as I increase my code?
Or, maybe they're saying that if I write useless code by mistake, I'm being careless which invites more errors?
Brilliant insight... I wish I had thought of all that before I turned my clear, concise 10 line application into a mangled mess of 100000 lines (hey look... I just rewrote the Windoze kernel!)
"In the first six months of 2002, my frequency of leaving the house fell 11 percent. Sales of handguns jumped 40% last year while the number of people incarcerated for Marijuana charges tripled. Meanwhile, legitimate whore houses in this country attracted fewer paying customer than Jack Valenti and Hillary Rosen combined."
Hard to argue that I leave the house less now solely because Jack Valenti and Hilary Rosen are money-whoring marijuana users with guns. Despite the self-righteousness of people who don't know what they're talking about, they're the real idiots that come up with lame, half-assed arguments to defend their completely illogical viewpoints.
Nice strawman... who's buying it besides you?
I don't download illegal music. Interestingly enough, I also don't buy "music" because it doesn't seem to exist anymore (or, exists so sporadically that I miss it).
Of course, one other thing: you forgot to mention the fact that if the industry were to embrace this technology instead of trying so desperately hard to thwart it, it would be a non-issue.
I've been holding off on PHP in favor of perl now for a significant amount of time because the lack of control in PHP scares me. There are some major sticking points: oop, variable scoping (BIGGIE) that I want to see come out of the next PHP release. Hopefully some meaningful discussion can be made on security issues as well.
However, the biggest thing the PHP community needs to start serious dialog on is how to meld it with the business world. PHP has so much potential and so much to offer the business world, but it won't get there until we shed the "kiddie" language aura that surrounds it.
We need dialog on how to make it a serious language in short...
I never understood this. Why would I want a computer that ridicules my hair, dress, and generally pathetic life? If I wanted that, I'd just get married!
"The Berman bill, ensured a copyright owner would not be liable for "disabling, interfering with, blocking, diverting, or otherwise impairing the unauthorized distribution, display, performance, or reproduction of his or her copyrighted work on a publicly accessible peer-to-peer file trading network, if such impairment does not, without authorization, alter, delete, or otherwise impair the integrity of any computer file or data residing on the computer of a file trader."
So, basically the RIAA/MPAA is immune to certain portions of the DMCA that's supposed to be there partially to help them. Too bad irony is dead.
Well, for one thing, I say there's a 95% chance of a hoax. I mean, let's face it, if the RIAA actually DID something to thwart real piracy, they'd be neutering their own efforts to gain absolute control over the distribution medium. No piracy = no justification to keep marauding for DRM and other technologies that would effectively provide them with absolute control over who uses their content, when they use it, and for how long they use it. That's a MUCH nicer looking bottom line to the RIAA than actually stopping pirates.
Vitamin D is pretty serious as well according to Whole Health Md.
Overdose symptoms include:
Early symptoms: Constipation (especially in children), diarrhea, dry mouth, increased thirst and frequency of urination, persistent headache, loss of appetite, metallic taste, nausea and vomiting, unusual fatigue.
Advanced symptoms: Bone and muscle pain, irregular heartbeat, persistent itching, extreme drowsiness, mental changes. Severe vitamin D toxicity may be fatal.
So who's responsible the first time some yahoo mixes up a drink consisting of a Vitamin D-laced banana, milk, D-enhanced ice cream, and some vitamin laced chocolate syrup? Can we say "wrongful death suit" in the event they drink this everyday?
Megadrive?
Well duh! You had to put the cheat in in JAPANESE then!

XM is going under - investment is futile.

He's got the Loop 'n Pitch, now if he can just get the "Loop 'n Bitch", I can replace 98% of the people in my life with a Speak & Spell!
I never understood this. Why would I want a computer that ridicules my hair, dress, and generally pathetic life? If I wanted that, I'd just get married!
I'd like to revise my previous estimate to "100%": http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/14/159242 &mode=thread&tid=167

"having them sell videos of executions" You mean like Faces of Death? Is this a slippery uphill slope then?
