I've always had crappy VCRs, so I guess I am used to low quality.

I guess I don't see much point in a Tivo type deal for radio, if you want do do talk radio the VHS deal works well, and if you want music your method would probably work well. And really how much good radio is there? NPR has most of their stuff online, and who would want to tape anything from the Clear Channel empire..

  3. Re:Radio Shows on TiVo For Radio? · · Score: 1

Try this, I have read about it, but never tried it. But what you do is run the audio out of your stereo into the audio in of your VCR, then you can get like 6 hours of audio onto a VHS tape. I would guess you could just set the VCR timer to tape when the show you care about airs. Quality probably isn't exciting, but radio is the source so it's not going to be great no matter what you do.

It's kind of ironic isn't it, my first real computer was a Mac LC, switched to Windows when I got the chance because OS 7.whatever was so closed off. Now I am on OS X because it's more open than Windows and more polished than Linux. I think a lot of Windows' success can be attributed to it being more open than MacOS was back in the day, and now the tables have turned.

Linux needs applications like those.

Still have a Dimension v333c that runs fine, only problem with it is that the CD-ROM is pretty flaky, but they all seem to do that at the 4-5 year mark.

You make a good point, and I shouldn't have bitched about those things since I haven't really played in Linux for close to a year. Our household has two iBooks and two white box PCs. My girlfreinds kids have the PCs, which run XP. I would love to get them Macs, but I don't have the cash, and I would love to get them to stop using Windows, but one attempt at that was very ugly. Maybe that's where Linux developers need to look in terms of desktop usability. Go find a 12-16 year old girl, put Redhat on her box and then listen to the never ending bitching. Write down the issues and you have what Linux needs to own the world:)

  15. Re:desktop on Intel's Itanium Will Get x86 Emulation · · Score: 2, Interesting

That's not a fair assertion. I don't feel Linux is ready for the desktop either, but I also miss some of the flexibility it gave me now(I replaced my Dell with an iBook). I liked the way I had my Gnome desktop set up, I liked KDE, I liked a lot of the applications. But then you had the dependency chasing to deal with, fucking with fonts to get thinks looking decent, the inability to copy and paste between some apps, little things like that. I believe linux is very close to being a great desktop, but it's not quite there. OS X gives me much of what linux did, but also a GUI I don't have to fuck with, and that's why I am on OS X.
