    Runaway!

Seriously, there are lots of great careers for someone in your position to pursue, why go into something where the deck is completely stacked against you? Even if you do succeed it will take longer, and not be to the level of where you could have been in an another career track. Take it from someone who has been through that ringer, if you do go for a PhD it should only be because you have a plan for an immediate exit from academia when you finish it (i.e. you are just "getting your union card").

The fact that you are questioning tells me you might not truly want this, and the only, only time I would ever suggest someone follow this track is if they have an unbelievable burning desire for it. That's what it will take!

"I'm not afraid" you say? You will be.

Or rather, the entire system is set up the redirect many of your most productive and innovative years into glorifying and enriching old people, who will reward you with crumbs, and the promise that you just *might* get to be like them some day (but probably won't). The science job market is not a market, it is a highly engineered ponzi scheme. Tech workers should be happy to be in a market where:

    1) What you can do is more important than your title
    2) You get paid well early, and can move up the pay scale quickly
    3) The old people don't control everything, and if they can't hack it, they're out

This is what a healthy job market looks like.

So, if GM designed a "proprietary air filter housing" that was shaped differently, would it be OK for them to legally prevent aftermarket companies from making air filters to fit, thereby forcing consumers to buy their air filters at inflated costs?

IANAL, but this is settled law, and the answer is no, GM can't and neither can Apple. Doing this without a license is "reverse engineering" and is protected. So Apple has no basis here other than intimidation and a promise of guaranteed compatibility (but if your reverse engineering is good your stuff will be as compatible as the next guy's).

I am your customer. When I was younger, I copied friends CDs onto tapes. If I had not copied them, I would never have bought them, because I didn't have much money. You didn't lose any sales to me. But I got hooked on music. It has become what I am sure will be a lifelong obsession.

Now I am grown up. I have a good job and I make decent money. I buy CDs constantly. I buy so many that it is hard for me to keep up with listening to them sometimes. Consider this very carefully:

If a CD is copy protected it has no value to me. None.

    I buy CDs because:

1)They have the best sound quality of formats that are unlocked...

2)...and I need an unlocked format because I rip everything into my iPod.

3)The CD is a fantastic archive. If not mistreated, it will last the rest of my life. My computer could explode and burn, but the archive is right there in the rack for the new computer.

4)I will never struggle with new formats. I can re-rip this audio into whatever new compression standard comes along.

5)I will never struggle with DRM. I bought the music and it will be mine forever, even if Apple, Microsoft and Sony all go out of business.

Here I am. I am your customer. Do you still even see me?

Do you want my money or not?

Err...someone who doesn't want to void the warranty? My post was in reply to one that noted that the specs page says:

"Memory upgrade must be performed by an Apple Authorized Service provider.".

Are there "authorized service providers" that do not price gouge like the apple store? I would very much like 1GB of memory but there is no way I would pay these prices for it.

Hidden costs indeed. If you upgrade the Mac mini to 1GB of memory through the Apple store, the additional cost is $425! So that $500 marvel is now $925. And for OS X to really sing, mucho memory is required.

Sadly, the math is starting to break down...

MOO made me understand what it might be like to have a drug addiction. I finally had to quit it "cold turkey" after too many marathon sessions that completely unplugged me from the rest of my life. I had "flash backs" for years, where I would reminisce about sending a task force of ships against my enemy's empire while holding the line against his attacks on mine. I was so into the game that I felt guilty sometimes about the "millions of people" I had "massacred" by dropping fusion bombs on their planets. So weird in retrospect.

I think what really made the game irresistible was the mixture of combat strategy and ship design strategy. You would design ships and build battle plans for "years", and then watch it all come together.

Changed my life? Yep: I quit strategy games for ever, because I felt I couldn't trust myself with them after the MOO addiction...

I've been waiting for this to happen for some time. We are now on the cusp of our latest suicidal "war" on our own society. I have no problem with protecting copyrights, but this law puts the Draco in draconian. Do we really want to head in this direction again? Do we really want to start locking people up for years for an arguably victimless crime? How about solving all the murders first? How about the punishment fitting the crime: perhaps a fine and restitution?
