    What is Microsoft doing to discourage third-party vendors from requiring that their apps run as Administrator.

    For example, certain games or applications will not run as a limited user, and there is absolutely no reason for this. I will even name names:

    • Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
    • The Sims
    • "Friends" Trivia Game (Time-Warner)

    My parents had no concept of file extensions.

    All their documents are {BASENAME}.PEN or {THIS}.ME or whatever. They were/and-still-are using WP6 for Windows, which let you ignore extensions. Why did they use WP6? It came with their first PC back in '95 and they were used to it, so my dad installed it on new machines when they got them.

    Now my dad has passed away, and finding docs and figuring out what they are for my mom is a royal PITA.

    My memory was faulty. I apologize.

    I guess the 586 was first gen, 593 was second gen, and the 596 third gen for Intel ethernet chips.

    I seem to recal the ethernet chip was the 82596. I remember working on a 82593 driver, and seeing the docs and specs for the '596 as well.

    My Toshiba Satellite has a physical on/off switch for the 802.11. I'd like to see any company block that in software.

    CDs came out in the early '80s. BYTE had an article on CD-ROM and the ISO9660 file system in May 85.

    Patents last for 20 years (actually, at the time it was 17). Shouldn't any patents on CD have expired?

    Add another dumb program to the list: The "Friends Trivia Game". The box specifies only Win2K or WinXP, which would lead one to think that it wouldn't require Admin.

    WRONG!

    I sent their tech support a nasty email pointing out that only sloppy coding practices would cause a game to need this.
