Uh, no. Just like someone would be annoyed that someone in World of Warcraft got all the best gear by REing the game and using bots and exploits...same with this. It doesn't matter if you are playing a game about being a gangster of it is a game about magical ponies, if it has a multiplayer element to it, people want a level playing field.
Maybe because you aren't going to embalm the person that you are killing? Maybe because you are going to kill a person in the embalming class? I am glad you aren't a detective.
What makes you think we have this freedom? I know we have freedom of speech, but I also know that if I yell FIRE! in a crowded theater, I am going to get in to fairly serious trouble. Freedom of speech was put in place to allow us to criticize the government and to freely talk about our beliefs. It is not there to protect people who want to issue death threats. Freedom might not be free...but in this case, that statement doesn't even apply.
I am baffled why people keep modding you up. Is it because you have girl in your name? I am not sure. But you really don't make much sense. If you say on a public forum that you want to kill someone, then you shouldn't be surprised that it is going to cause concern. The article describes what they did, and it seems reasonable. It isn't ruining her life. They are making sure she gets the help she need. It could be a lack of judgement on her part...if so, then she learned not to post that stuff in public. If it was something more serious, now she has the help for that. I don't see what is so wrong with this.
My life isn't shit. And I am able to control my temper and be appropriate at work as well. So I don't really get where you are coming from. There are ways to constructively release tension that aren't fist fights. I guess all the mods have anger management issues, though, since they loved your post.
I imagine you haven't traveled much. Stupidity is fairly universal and comes in many different flavors. Hating on Americans...particularly when you are one...seems pretty pointless. Ironically, your posts do give credence to your own theory.
It's nice to see the other side of the argument. Though I still think that they do more evil than good and we would be better off using a different model. And generally, people don't do things that aren't in their best interesting. So I am a bit skeptical on your claim that they lose money on you. How do you really know how much they take?
I am going to try my best to not be insulting here, because I know plenty of IT people who are smart, but you really aren't rising above your stereotypes.
In something as complex as a AAA video game, there are going to be bugs. There are just too many lines of code that are doing too many complex things for their not to be bugs. Also, there are too many different configuration of hardware/OS/drivers to adequately test for every combination on the planet.
You expect your DVD player to play DVDs because that is its primary function. It is the same hardware so they can test the hell out of it. Also, playing DVDs is its primary function.
I would expect someone in IT should be able to see that is different than a PC which is a lot more complex for so many reasons. Add on top of that millions of lines more code than you would have in DVD player and that you are doing complex calculations based on user input and you can become a lot more forgiving of issues.
The only people that want this are people who are completely ignorant of how their PC and video games work. It would raise the price of games and would minimally reduce the number of bugs. Besides, if something stupid like this was put in place, they would just always label the game beta or place a statement in the ToS that waives their liability. Just dumb all around.
I don't think you have a clue what reality is. You can have the best quality control processes in place and have it adequately funded and it still is going to crash on someone's computer. If you make companies liable for when the game doesn't run when some kid has faulty RAM, prices will go up.
You obviously aren't a software developer. Or if you are, you have never worked on anything large. It is impossible to write bug free code on the scale of a game like Fallout 3. IMPOSSIBLE. It isn't bullshit. It is the nature of the beast. Particularly when we are talking about the PC since there are so many different hardware configurations and there is no way to test every combination in the world.
That being said, consoles should have an easier job of it. But I still will say it is impossible to write that much code with that many developers and not have bugs.
The only people who would be wanting such legal recourse are people who do not code. There is not a single complex game out there that doesn't have bugs in it. Not one.
I get what you are saying. But when you really look at how our society is set up, we can't provide for ourselves and a child at that age. It isn't until after high school that we are truly able to enter the work force. I don't know many 8-14 year olds that could handle having a child without the help from their parents.
As far as nudity goes, in the U.S., our puritanical roots make sure that we are a bit prude in that sense. It is silly by all rational thought, but no one said religions was ever rational.
Are we becoming more irrational? I don't think so. I think more and more people don't believe that magic started the world and that magic beings visited us doing magic and then just magically left until some day they will come back and do magic to destroy us all. But it is pretty clear that many people would rather be told something they want to hear than confront reality and facts (e.g. politics).
Except your console probably won't be working by then. And I still can play many of my old games on my modern PC (if I bother to, which is rarely). And the older they get, the more likely I can get an emulator to play those games.
I play on both the PC and console and love both for different reasons. I am not anti-console. But the arguments against a PC are fairly weak.
*sigh* Hardcore gaming isn't dying. Hardcore games are probably selling as well, if not more, than they ever did 20 years ago. Actually, I am sure they sell more now because more people play games.
The only thing that is dying is my patience for people who claim stuff is dying.
That's a long post for something fairly simple. Why don't BYO phone customers get a better deal? Because the carriers can charge what they already charge and people will still buy it. Simple as that.
You can't feed your family with a 3G connection and a Nook. Really, when they ban your Nook from the service, then you are out the money for the device you purchased. So you just wasted money.
I think you lack an understanding of reality. If consumers do this, it will just make it worse for other consumers. If you are a stupid consumer, you will hack your Nook and take a chance that it won't be banned. But since I am sure they can track your usage, they can figure out what you are doing and shut you down. It isn't ethical, for one. But that is irrelevant. It's just dumb since it is easily tracked. You are using the service in a way that you didn't pay for. And you will be banned. So why not just do the right thing from the start?
So many people find stupid justifications on here to do the wrong thing. These people always seem to be making bad decisions for themselves and in general are just leeches on society. They don't produce, they just get whatever they can illegally so they can keep up with their friends who actually get jobs and buy stuff.
I get the whole intellectual challenge of breaking stuff. That I am cool with. It's the people who use this knowledge gained by others that I find to be fairly useless individuals.
Uh, no it doesn't. Some documents aren't created for everyone to see. If they were trying to ban all digital versions of Twilight...that would be a digital book burning since it was meant for public consumption. And I don't think that would be very dangerous...but that's just my biased opinion;)
Actually, I haven't really noticed that. I have noticed that most people these days play video games. And if they don't they escape in to fantasy worlds through books or other outlets. Stop being so judgmental.
You are totally clueless. When someone says "if you don't like it, go elsewhere", they mean go to another company. If you don't like the price on a Toyota Prius, you don't have an expectation to be able to buy a Prius from Ford. Same with WoW. You don't like it, play one of the many other MMORPGs out there. The fact that you have an expectation that Blizzard should allow other people to provide service for a game that they created in its entirety just shows that you completely unreasonable you are.
Your math is completely off. You can get WoW and all it's expansions for about $35. New expansions are not $50-$100. I think they are $30 to $40 when they come out? And then they drop. They don't even come out every year. $15 is the worst case scenario. If you but multiple months, it is cheaper. On top of that, they have free 14 day trials where you can download it and try the game for free.
I don't play the game any more, but your cost complaint is a bit ridiculous. You get a ton of content that is actively maintained for the money you pay. If you go to one movie every few months, you are getting ripped off more than what you pay for WoW.
Ok. But I don't really see people being arrested left and right for doing Google searches. So all this freaking out seems bizarre. Your web searches are not private. Any computer connected to the Internet is vulnerable. We all know this. Yet somehow we expect privacy?
After being on Slashdot a number of years...the typical Slashdot posts that get modded up just strike me as more and more insane. I seriously imagine you all sitting in your basement with guns waiting for the government to attack you for watching Fox News.
Yet you post all over the Internet. So I guess you aren't really hiding everything. When was it suddenly a good idea to put private information on the Internet. Why are you doing that? If you aren't, it doesn't matter what Google does.
Where the heck did it say it would tell her that you did? You guys take one statement, blow it out of proportion, and claim it is Google's mission statement. And you wonder why no one ever takes you seriously.
So you are saying that Google should not release its code as open source? I mean, if privacy is good and openness is bad... And since Microsoft is closed source, they must have something to hide (like lots of bugs).
So privacy is bad for code and good for people? Maybe if people were more open source, there would be less crime;)

Actually, I like the drama. I find it somewhat amusing. It is like Gossip Girl, except for people who are even nerdier than I am!

Why is that surprising? Starcraft is a 10 year old game that is designed to be hosted on a single computer. WoW is not.
Ok. But I don't really see people being arrested left and right for doing Google searches. So all this freaking out seems bizarre. Your web searches are not private. Any computer connected to the Internet is vulnerable. We all know this. Yet somehow we expect privacy?
