I like being able to go to get a new computer or go to a friend or relatives house for the weekend, download steam, "install" HL/counterstrike, and 20 minutes later, its ready to go with nore more intervention from me.
It's convienent. I like what it is NOW, but I don't anticipate participating in the subscription game model, which is what a lot of people don't like.
And the problems with steam are way overblown. Anything that went wrong with steam has long been resolved.
challenger exploded from because of a poor use of statistics that made managers (and enough engineers confidentent) that a launch in super-cold weather was safe, then it was not. Quick summary, two O-Rings chance of failure was improperly determined, and thus, a launch was allowed in cold weather that lead to both O-Rings failing and thus, the fuel tanks explodering.
But people can defeat politicians..... we aren't defenseless cows... (or better yet, sheep). The grandparent is completely right, have you been part of a million man march to protest bad government? No? Well neither have I, or anyone I know for that matter.
I'm glad to see people who know the truth. Terrorists don't hate us because WE are free, they hate us because we are stopping THEM from being free. (Support of Israel, support of Saudi Arabia, positioning of 100,000 troops in Iraq)
I read somewhere (probably in a slashdot comment) that the reason the patch is so big is that everything was recompiled on the latest MS compiler (vc2005 or something?) instead of vc6.
(Doesn't matter which OS)
Email comes in with an attachment
User clicks attachment (The subject line was FUNNY JOKE!!!!1)
Window pops up and says "Please enter your administrator password to see the Joke" (or somethin g more social engineery)
User (not a poweruser, just a normal everyday surf the web and read email user) enters the root password.
The box is comprimized. Guess which OS this just happened on?
Thats right ANY OS. The weakest link in home computer security is ALWAYS AND FOREVER going to be located between the keyboard and the chair. BSD being stable and secure has nothing to do with how secure a desktop in someone's home is. Viruses are for windows because there are >90% chance the virus will run on the machine it hits. If the positions were reversed and MAC had the 90% marketshare of desktop computers there would be PLENTY of infections and will be able to spread reguardless of the codebase's security history.
to summarize (even though it really isn't needed)
Open Market == cheaper products and the profit of companies competing in the market approaches zero! go Econ101
I think the editor was pointing out that Syllable runs on any system you want (x86 for example) while you have to run OSX on comparably more expensive PowerPC MAC hardware. THe comment wasn't comparing the interface of the OS's at all.
I'm consider leaving my programming position for an unrelated field. Programming is my hobbie, not my career i realized. Business programming is dull, and drains me of the motivation to work on something ejoyable.
(boss, this is NOT my two week notice.)
I'd have to say (not that I actually know) that there would be equal danger now from a solar flare crashing your computer as there will be on a quantum computer. But what the hell do I know? You should go ask Scotty.
You can't extract that information, yet. But what happens when a better method for dna sequencing is devloped that can sequence the entire genome? (Got to love the slippery slope argument!) Are they just going to put it into effect? How will you know that they are only running one test on your DNA. At least with fingerprints you KNOW all they can do is match them to other fingerprints.
Genetic diseases for one. Do you want your insurance company checking up on your DNA record and finding out that you have a dispotision to some costly disease and dropping you? Even convited felons don't deserve that.
How about if a violence gene is identified and those who have it get a +1 guilty in their court trials just because of that?
You don't need mouse gestures, all you need to do is highlight a URL, and paste it into the MAIN WINDOW of the FireFox browser, NOT THE URL BAR, and it will load that website.
What exactly is wrong with gaining karma from doing something that benefits the readers of slashdot? I'm thankful the grandparent found that link, and I'm thankful it was +5 so I could see it no matter what.
America is taking to complete regulate itself into poverty. Like another poster said (And who i should have replied to) XM can just move to Mexico, and still broadcast into the United States, and you know what? That is money that is going to a Mexcian company, not American. Thank the government for recession, and thank the rich CEO's (Like the NYSE making millions to do WHAT exactly?) for taking fat paychecks then outsourcing work to foreign nations just to keep the company's bottom line out of the red.
Acutally picking a color is lower than 50% depending on the number of green 0's on the wheel. There is no way to play ANY casino game (besides video poker I think) for an extended amount of time and still have the same, or more money than when you started. (I'm talking statically here and not just 5 games in a row and walking out). The game with the best favor for the player is craps with somewhere around a 49.765% chance of winning. Although I've heard that it is possible to actually get a higher than 50% winning record against vido poker.
Better on a roulette color is NOT the best way to make money in a casino
Steam Server Status
Player Count 153,531 people seem to be more capable than you.
You sir, are a liar. Unless you are on dial-up, you are a total liar.

I find Robin Hoodinism to be a much better term than piracy. Steal from the Rich, give to the Poor!

That would also give patent holders a target for lawsuits.

Copyright infringement is NOT stealing.
Once again, troll, thieves steal. Downloading music is not stealing. Therefore people who download music are not thieves.
no two usernames here... plus i'm not hiding my username, bum.
The question is, will someone go to jail for this? Or will the company just have to give the money back?
