  1. WTF? on Subterranean Slashdot Email Blues · · Score: 5, Funny

I can only imagine how many emails you will get today with "WTF?" as the subject line. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say it will be more than your usual 50. :)

You should really tag drivel like this with a disclaimer or people are going to think you really are serious. Oh wait. . .

    Ok...it is way cool.
But how much is the damn thing going to cost me?

  5. Great source of telephone numbers on 41 Million Sign Up for National Do-Not-Call List · · Score: 2, Interesting

I can't help but wonder how long it will take before some offshore telemarketing company uses this lovely list as a source for valid numbers? Yes, yes, it will be illegal. No, no, the man in Malaysia doesn't care, and the company selling the goods has deniability because the marketing is outsourced. FWIW, I signed up last month.

  6. Support? on Newest iPod vs. the Nomad Zen NX? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Creative is horrible at support. Have you ever tried to DL a driver pack from them? Usually you get 4 or 5 TSR proggies that will crash your system. I lived in Singapore and actually had to go to their HQ three times to get my Geforce II replaced. Bad news.
Apple? I own an IPOD, and notwithstanding that you have to install MusicMatch, their package is quite good. I had very few software problems and absolutely no hardware issues. The IPOD is top notch stuff and it makes the subway commute into work everyday much more enjoyable.

  7. Outsourcing on BioWare Teams Up With Ex-Black Isle Boss · · Score: 4, Interesting

From what I understand, Obsidian is very strong on the dev and game design end of things. They are not, however, very strong in distribution, marketing and supply chain management. Bioware has partnered with the big boys (Microsoft et al) and has shown the ability to market and distribute its titles. The combination of these two companies should (hopefully) mean that we will get edgy, indy style games into a more mainstream distribution channel.

  8. Agreement? on Florida's Version Of TIA May Spread To Other States · · Score: 2, Insightful

Although I hate to say it, I have to say that they have a good point here. The need for a tool to help law enforcement is unquestioned. The only problem that most of us seem to have is the use of this tool.
The states already have access to all this data. The only difference now is that they will be able to access it more quickly. I cannot see how that will be any worse than what we already have.
Unfortunately, what we already have is proof that this tool will not be used in the utopian manner than the designers intend. Instead, it will be used by police forces to highlight people that they feel are suspects (because they meet some predetermined criteria). They will then seek to examine these folks to determine if they are associated with the crime they are investigating. Of course, if they happen to stumble across some other "crime" while they investigate they can get two for the price of one.
Is it needed in the short term? Yes, I hate to say it, but I think that it is.
Is it the correct solution in the long run? Perhaps, but not right now. Not with the "Big Brother" mentality that seems to be gripping the law enforcement community.

  9. Sizing! For the gravitationally challenged. on Slashdot T-Shirt Contest Winners! · · Score: 1

I would like to request that the shirts be made available in fat-guy (err, larger) sizes. If the shirt comes too small it would look more like a damn semi-colon than a /.

  10. Re:Why not just buy an Ipaq on Garmin iQue 3600 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Have you seen how big the damn IPaq gets when you a put a sleeve on it?
And god forbid you want a 802.11b card too. The damn thing would be 10cm deep and weigh a kilo.

  11. Copyrights? on What Do You Get When You Buy a CD? · · Score: 5, Interesting
You are asking an interesting question, but I think you are getting too far into the trees and missing the freaking forest.

    1. You own the materials that take home with you. If someone steals it out of your car, it is theft. You own the physical medium. Sort of like the difference between hardware and software. . .you own what you can touch.
    2. You own the right to listen to and enjoy the product on the cd. It is yours to use as you see fit as long as you do not violate #3.
    3. You do not own the right to edit, copy or otherwise distribute the product. The product is a copyrighted material. If you edit the song to use at a dance party you MUST get permission from the holder of the copyright.
    4. You might argue that you expected more in the transaction, but in reality you are buying the medium and then buying the rights to use the product. You are not buying the product.
    5. Fair use? Fair use regards using PART of the product in a way that is non-commercial. It is defined differently depending on who is using it as well. There is quite a bit more leeway for a teacher in an educational setting.
    I need a prozac.

  12. Irony not hypocrisy on Aral Sea Disappearing · · Score: 3, Informative

Having written the oringal post, I need to clarify that I was only pointing out the irony of Mr. Bush hosting an environmental summitt while his government's policies are so obviously ambivalent to the environment. Remember, this is the man who refused to even consider the Kyoto treaty and has opened up MILLIONS of acres of federal land to oil and timber companies. He and many in his administration are ex-oil executives. They made their livelihoods in petrochemicals and are not going to stop now. This is not saying that he is evil. . .it is saying that we need to pay attention to what he does not what he says.
