The hard drive is irrelevant with regards to playing pirated games. All the HD lets you do is store complete games and savefiles - not play them. Take out the HD from a modded X-Box and you'll still be able to play copied games.

    First you say:
Microsofts next launch is absolutely focused on "search". The entire filesystem metaphor in Longhorn revolves around data and association. The 'Stuff like this' (?) demo is a bit like Dashboard, it brings up relevant info from all your personal data, and the internet. When users are trying to find something like 'funny billy goatse photo' their hard drive and Microsoft's search engine will be used together. Unknowingly, MSN search will be a part of everyday life.
So far, great for Windows users.

    But then you say:

Microsofts next monopoly abuse is pretty clear already, their technology demos show it too. They will integrate and before you can say 'Anti-trust investigation' the world at large will be using MSN search for _everything_ - information is power too.

So - Improving file search in Windows and integrating web search is a bad thing? Making Windows better is a bad thing? You'd have to be a *nix zealot to seriously mean such a thing.

Microsoft will not stop Google or any other search engine in their next iteration of Windows/IE. Microsoft is going to make it a whole lot easier to use MSN Search, but hey, it's their OS. Personally, I applaud the effort. Maybe Google et all will improve because of Microsofts efforts.

Yeah, those ads are pretty annoying. If you're buying a Disney DVD you probably have kids, and anyone who has kids knows they want to watch the movies over and over and over again. That means you have to wait for the commercials to finish every time you insert the disc before you're finally allowed to see the movie.
Having kids also means you *have* to make a backup of the DVD (it's amazing how fast a few scratches and finger marks can destroy a DVD.

As always, there's a solution. Copy the DVD to your hard drive with DVD Decrypter, strip the movie (so that you're left with an image that will simply start playing when you insert the disc), and burn it with your favourite software. Works like a charm and -- no more ads!

RedHat, OTOH, comes with all of the above, in about 7 flavors of each. You get Evolution, The Gimp, Mozilla, 2 full desktop environments, tons of games (some quite good like FreeCiv and BZFlag), several media players/rippers, DVD and CD recording software, and a full featured Office package.

if the MPAA is so worried about dvd screener leaks, why don't they just embed the names of the screener recipients on the footage, something like "this screener is for Mr. Suchandsuch's private viewing only". if it leaks, then they can go directly to Mr Suchandsuch and sue him. This is already being done (using serial numbers rather than names, though). However, it's easy enough to just wipe out that serial by remastering the movie through an app like Adobe Premiere, and that's just what the underground distributors are doing.

Another tactic that is currently deployed is turning the movie into B&W every ten or so minutes. I doubt this discourages anyone, but it probably annoys the legitimate recipient of the screener.

One binder is for data backups, another is for pictures/movies, yet another is for vcd caps etc. It works pretty well.
